oops, I should have made my self a little clearer (I got interupted when I made that first post). I already am running sms. I was looking at MOM but to me it looks like it is aimed at managing just the servers mainly right now. What I want is a program that I can open up and tell me the status of any desktop system. I want to see what one are off-line, error conditions, remote reboot, boot, and shutdown (through wake on lan nics), etc. It would be really nice it they could also monitor my servers like MOM can (I run sql, exchange, isa, sms + standard windows server services like dns, ad, dhcp, etc). I really want to try to stay away from increasing my usage of local system resources on my machines (sms kills some of my desktops with the amount of ram it uses, almost 12 mb at some times). This is a school enviroment that is spread between 4 buildings (linked by fiber and/or wireless). I think I will look into Sitekeeper and VMC/Radmin. ws6

Need help - upgrading 2k advanced cluster to 2k3 enterprise
ws6 replied to ws6's topic in Everything New Technology
Thank for your responce. I plan to redo my ISA box for 2 reasons. 1 is that I need to add another drive to it's raid array (it is too small), needs more ram, and I am going to put win 2k3 std server on it (it is currently running win2k std server). I have a free upgrade for 2k3. The ISA box is currently a DC becouse it has to be for some software I have running on it. --------------- I am migrating to exchange 2k3 this weekend. I have a feeling it is going to be fun. I have already done 1 migration on a standard server. When I do upgrade my cluster I was looking at dumping my exchange mailboxes to pst files (I only have about 40 mailboxes) and then strip my exchange info from active directory. I did this when I upgraded from exchange 2k std to clustered exchange 2k enterprise and worked very well. After I get my cluster back up and done messing with the directory i will reinstall exchange and import my mailboxes back. For printer migration I will just have to reinstall the printer from scratch. I plan to use the same naming structure that I am right now. In theory, though, if I keep the virtual server names and the printer share names the same they won't have to reinstall them. If they do, the staff here knows how to delete and re-install printers. I am running SQL 2k enterprise (I have a school agreement for my server btw). This won't be a problem. All my workstations are a mix of win 2k pro and xp pro (183 total). You don't need the Dsclient these right? It is only if you are running 98/ME/NT 4 or lower, right? ----------- Hehe, running the cluster is nice in some things. The reason that we have it is due to an idea our old priciples husband had. Once it is up and running it works great. I am running it A/A. Exchange, IIS, and school stuff on 1 box. SMS, SQL, and church stuff on the other. It is kind of overkill. The public highschool system here though just got a datacenter cluster for the district (we are private). Thanks, Chris T. -
Need help - upgrading 2k advanced cluster to 2k3 enterprise

Hi, I need some help. I work for a school that 3 servers. We are planning on upgrading our servers to win 2k3 over christmas break (about 1 week downtime). Here is my problem. One of the cluster box's is my PDC. The cluster runs everything (SQL, Exchange, school management, printer, etc) and the 3rd box is just an ISA firewall w/ content filtering and analisys. When I upgrade the servers I won't be able to just upgrade them since I am adding another drive to thier local raid array (boot disk). I am having total redo the raid array. Also I don't have time to redo all the classroom computer right now (only 1 week's time). What would you all suggest? I had 1 idea but didn't know how well it would work. First more my PDC to the firewall, then wipe and reinstall cluster. After cluster was back up, move PDC back and wipe/reinstall firewall. Would this work or do you think I will have problems in the future? Also will I get a chance to upgrade active directory to the 2k3 version doing this? Thanks, Chris T. -
Hi, I have office 97 installed on multiple win2k boxes. The problem I am having is that after a while of use the spell check feature stops working. Has anyone seen this before and know of a way to fix it??

I have a retail copy of C&C that I cracked with the no cd fix that works fine under windows xp (single proccessors). I have had problems with my computer at home, though, not running Red Alert 2. It is a dual AMD system running XP. I have not tried Tiberum sun on that system yet. Red alert 2 works fine at work (single processor, win xp). Of note though, I have been reading some of the progress on the new general game and I see for the beta that they have released a fix for multi-processors. I am wondering if all C&C games have problems with multi-processors?? Hope this helps, Ws-6

hehe, this is my first exchange 5.5 box that i have done (i admin 6 other exchange 2k and a exchange 2k cluster). i just finished installing sp6a (i hadn't got that far yet when i first wrote the message). i think i found the problem though. i used regedit to look at the registry setting for the services and found that they where looking at the default locations instead of where i installed them to. I fixed that. also i found that there was 2 files it needed in the system32 directory that i had to also manually move. once i did all this the smtp work fine. now i just have to figure out how to setup exchange 5.5

Hi, I am working on a older server that is running NT 4. I have installed SP 3 with the NT 4 Option Pack and then SP 4. I am having a problem with the smtp service. It is always getting a error with the smtp service about file not found. I went to MS's site and did a search for it. I found 1 article that told me to move some files from the system32/inet folder to where i have the inet server running. I did that but it didn't help. In the article though it told me to move 1 file that I have been unable to locate. The file is smtp.dll. Does anyone know where I can find this dll? I need to get my smtp server running so that i can reinstall exchange 5.5 on the system (it is a mail server). anyone know of any way to get this to work? Thanks, ws-6

hey what about trend???? i have had excelent luck w/ trend av software. i use there neate suite (server scan, interscan virus wall on my internet gateway, exchange scan, officescan corprate, and thier master management console)on about 200 pc's at work and use pc-cillin at home. they tend to get definitions out faster than norton and also thier auto update system actually works automatically like it is suppose to (norton has problems where it doesn't always auto update). mcafee sucks. :-p (sorry but they are one of the slowest getting new defs out and thier scans are notorious for missing things). any corprate ppl should look at trend for sure. it is nice to look at your whole av suite in action in 1 web managed panel and it scans agressively. also the remote nt workstation installs and remote server installs are nice.
