Please help. I accidentally deleted an important folder in a shared folder on another computer. Is there a way to recover the folder since the "undo" option is unavailable?

HELP! I've just lost my primary slave drive (Western Digital 120GB) and I didn't have a backup for it yet. I've partitioned it but didn't format it back to NTFS yet. Is there a way to restore all the files on a hard drive after partitioning or formatting? Or reconstruct the files on another drive?
-
Thanks for your advice. Is there a way to do this without using third party software? I don't have RAID set up nor make regular backups.

I can't access a file that requires the use of a proxy. How do I find out which proxy server to use? Go through the free proxy list one by one is inefficient.

PC Inspector File Recovery 3.0 does not work for me. It keeps on giving me a "Division by Zero" error during scanning. I did end up using GetDataBack for NTFS (they made a separate one for FAT) to recover the files. Oh File Scavenger is also a good choice. P.S. DO NOT use Ontrack's EasyRecovery. It doesn't preserve the tree structure and renamed all the files by file type (all ZIPs in one folder and names 001.zip, 002.zip, etc.), the program runs slow and they charge a lot for the license also.

Yes it's still free. Should I format the drive back to NTFS before running the software or just leave it as the way it is now?

I have no idea what happened to the drive. After turning on the computer the D: drive is gone from My Computer. I went to Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management then the disk setup wizard show up and I partitioned it. Might be a virus. I'll do a scan after finding a way to recover the files.

Ok this is not really a XP specific problem but since I am running XP pro I might as well ask the question here. Back in RealPlayer 8 you can set the Home Clip so a clip will play when you opened RealPlayer. Is this feature in RealOne because I can't find it under preferences.

Try disabling your firewall or find out the port number Direct Connect uses. This is a good P2P program if you fit the entry requirements.

It is not a good idea to use client or home OSes to act as a web server. Have you tried using .NET Server RC1? On the other hand the problem might be with your relative and absolute links.

Now what can I do with it? On a side note, this release seems to be ready for sale. I mean all necessary functions are there. So what's the hold up?

I thought only Standard and Enterprise (32 and 64 bit) Editions can be downloaded. The "Manage Your Server" wizard is great for setting things up for the uninitiated.

Yes this is very annoying. My solution is to use a download manager.

What do you consider the best computer game ever made?
whoisit replied to pr-man's topic in Slack Space
Star Control 2 is the best game of all time. Privateer and Crusader series were both great (both by Origin). There was gonna be part 3 for both games (Privateer 3 was in design stage not sure about Crusader 3) then Origin focus on online games. Too bad Origin is gone because their games always force you to upgrade your computer. -
In Internet Explorer 6 you can change the language of menu and dialog boxes by going to Tools -> Internet Options -> Languages -> Change (this button should be between the Add button and Cancel button). If you don't have the language that you want to change into then you will download it from Windows update for Win 98. The problem is the above procedure only work when I am using IE 6 in Win 98SE. In Win XP Pro the Change button is not present at all. The Windows Update page for XP doesn't have any downloads for languages. Any ideas on why and how to fix this?

Changing the language of menu and dialog boxes in IE 6
whoisit replied to whoisit's topic in Software
I went to the site you posted and here's what I get for XP Pro: Critical Updates and Service Packs (22) Recommended Updates (25) Internet and Multimedia Updates (0) Multi-Language Features (0) Windows Tools (0) Additional Windows Downloads (0) Advanced Security Updates (0) I checked the Windows 2000 Family and there's 91 entries for Multi-Language Features. I guess Microsoft really want to sell those MUI packs. Yup start charging people for something that was free in previous OSes. -
I bought the Western Digital 120GB w/8MB cache recently. The bios on my ASUS P2B motherboard (yes I know it's old to still use Pentium 2 mobo) wouldn't recognize the drive even though it supports the ATA100 interface. So I flashed the BIOS with the latest version and it still wouldn't recognize it. I've determine that the mobo doesn't support large harddrives. I've resort to adjust the jumpers then use EZ-BIOS to report the correct size. But EZ-BIOS warned me that it doesn't operate under WinXP. My current install of WinXP Pro keep on freezing on the login screen. It'll just say welcome on the screen but no user accounts would show up. I have to reinstall XP Pro. Now I put the harddrive in an old system with Win98 and use it for storage. Just remember to make sure that your BIOS can recognize large harddrives before buying one.

Changing the language of menu and dialog boxes in IE 6

Negative on the friend that worked at a company who's a MS certified partner. I guess I'll have to obtain the MUI pack through other "channels". -
I don't recall that the Western Digital's support page mention anything about controllers at all. I am sure all the new motherboards out now should detect the harddrive without additional hardware (ATA-133 controller) and software (EZ-BIOS). I could just buy the ATA-100 controller since Maxtor is the only company that has ATA-133 harddrives. The performance is not too significant when compared to ATA-100. I thought the OS derive information about the system through BIOS (date and time, amount of RAM, CPU type and speed, etc.). So how can the OS (I am using XP Pro) report something that the BIOS incorrectly detected? The harddrive only came with one jumper on Cable Select and my computer couldn't make it past the second bootup screen. I add in another jumper like WD's page suggested but now it is smaller than the actual size. The correct size is reports only after I installed EZ-BIOS. It did ask me an I going to install WinXP on the drive. If you chose YES then it will tell you that EZ-BIOS doesn't work with XP and the installation will stop. Therefore I chose NO and format the drive to FAT32.

Q: What does file permissions have anything to do with Hardware(XP)? A: Nothing. Unless you are interested in hardware solution like a harddrive lock then this topic shouldn't be posted here. Anyway. There is little to no security under FAT16 and FAT32. Under XP when you create an account with administrator privleges it will ask you if you want to make your account privte. If you choose yes then anything placed in your account folder cannot be accessed by users with limited account (not sure about other admin account users).

I use GetRight and Download Accelerator Plus back then. Now I use FlashGet. You can download it for free at http://www.amazesoft.com/ I am not sure if FlashGet has spyware or not. Can anyone find out?

Changing the language of menu and dialog boxes in IE 6
whoisit replied to whoisit's topic in Software
I just tried it with IE 3.2 in NT Workstation today and it works. I'll try this in 2000 tomorrow. Apparently the IE version doesn't matter what matters is the OS. I am dual booting 98SE/XP Pro. I can do it in 98 but not in XP. I find it outrageous that Microsoft is charging people money for the Multilingual User Interface Pack (it is not sold in retail shelves, you must acquire it from MS). The ability to change the language in menus and dialog boxes should be free since all the translation for each languages has been done for each local releases already. At least they didn't charge you to read/write in another language (you do need Pro though, which cost an extra $100 over Home). -
Eventually all game developers will design games with XP in mind so support will only get better. It's just a matter of time before the Win 9x OSes get ditched.

Some .avi would play without sound or audio. This is caused by using a later divx encoder to play an file encoded using an ealier version of divx. Searching through the Divx websites will give you the solution.
