I am getting a new hard drive (Western Digital 120GB w/8MB cache) for backup. It will be the primary slave device. Should I format it to FAT32 or NTFS? BTW, is that hard drive only sold in OEM? I can't seem to find one that is sold in retail. Any help is appreciated.

If you're using a hub for you network then you should assign static IPs like what infoman suggests. I am using a router so I use dynamic IPs. At first I couldn't see my Win98 shared folder from Win XP Pro then I figure out that I didn't change the workgroup name on the XP machine and that was the problem.

Thanks guys. I guess I'll go with NTFS. I don't really need the security features just fault tolerance when bad clusters appear.

I just installed XP Pro on a Pentium 133 with 64MB of RAM (box minimum states Pentium II 233 with 128MB). It still boots to the login screen within 30 seconds but login takes forever. Most apps do not run very well but they work. Did anyone tried to install XP below the minimum specs on the box?

Does have a larger hard drive cache buffer (8MB instead of 2MB) make a difference under XP?
-
Thanks for the reply. BTW, if you go to Western Digital's web site then you would see that they also offer the 120GB EIDE hard drive with 8MB buffer at $299, but it is sold out right now. I thought WD is working on hard drives with 12MB buffer right now, can anyone confirm this?

I think ScanDisk (chkdsk) and Disk Defragmenter takes longer to run on bigger partitions so I break up big hard drives.

Hey Snake, you can uninstall XP and revert back to the previous OS by going to Control Panel then Add/Remove Programs. One of the apps that you can uninstall would be XP. I don't think this method works if you change the partition from FAT32 to NTFS. I read this from a magazine but have not try this myself since I dual-boot 98SE/XP Pro.

When most businesses use XP Professional and .NET Servers. Probably within 4-6 years.

I think 98SE is the best. ME runs slower than 98SE and it doesn't play DOS games very well. 95 doesn't handle USB very well. Microsoft should either refund money to those who bought ME or give them XP for free.

I am using a dual boot WinXP Pro/98SE right now. I could've use ME but it doesn't handle DOS games very well. You don't need Partition Magic to switch between OSes. Just install XP second and the loader will handle it for you. Most of the time, 98 and ME use the same drivers. I have no idea why Microsoft released ME when everyone knows that XP is coming out the following year. Here's something that ME can't do but available with 98SE: install multiple copies on different partitions. Let's say you want to install English 98 on C and another 98 on D. It is possible to alter between the two without using Partition Magic (Partition Magic doesn't alter anyway). This is not possible with ME. ME runs slower than 98SE. It does have the System Restore feature, though.

Does Win XP come with DVD decoder? If so, is it integrated into Windows Media Player?
-
I know you need to have a DVD drive which is common sense but I don't like what Microsoft is doing here. They should not state that XP has DVD playback capability the decoder is not included. All Windows have DVD playback capability with the right hardware and software.

Since Win XP replaced Scandisk with Checkdisk (chkdsk) how do you use it?

Thanks for the help. One more thing, where is the location of the scan log?

My bad. If you are in classic login mode (where you need to enter the user name) then click on cancel should return you to Win XP default login screen. If you are in Win XP default login screen hit alt + ctrl + del will change you to classic login mode (make should you didn't click on any username. I am using Win XP Pro and the only time I use the classic login mode is when I want to login as the administrator.

I tried ACDSee 4.0, didn't like how it place an icon on your desktop so I switched back to 3.1.

To save yourself from lots of trouble in the future it is recommended to install each OS on different partitions. I am dual booting Win 98SE/Win XP Pro right now. Before that I was dual booting Win 98SE/Win 98 SE on separate partitions.

Just hit alt + ctrl + del to switch back and forth between the two login modes.
