    is this normal?

I had a similar prob recently with my CDRW, if you have a VIA chipset then read the CDRW Weirdness thread for the solution.

    CDRW problems with XP

In another thread, someone said something about compatibility issues between InCD & certain VIA chipsets. I haven't tried InCD since before I upgraded my mobo & CPU, so if the above is true, then perhaps it might work ok with my current setup. It was very annoying the last time I ran it - it was causing the exact same prob as areid described in his 1st problem, & the problem went away as soon as I uninstalled InCD. Maybe I'll try the latest version just before I do my next re-install from scratch [that way, if it buggers anything up, it doesn't really matter ]

    NTFS without the BS

Quote: Recycler IS the recycle bin directory for NTFS partitions. You can not right-click and choose Empty on that folder. You must go within the folder and then right-click on the subfolders...or simply delete all of the subfolders. You'd think that with this latest incarnation of NT that's supposed to bridge the gap between home & work environments that they'd make NTFS a bit more user-friendly, so that ppl used to doing simple things like using the recycle bin don't have to change their way of doing things. Quote: Check out www.xteq.com and download X-setup 6.2. It includes options for disabling NTFS features. Cool, I I didn't realise 6.2 had gone final. Quote: Why is security so much of a concern for you? As long as you assign permissions there is no trouble whatsoever and if your part of the admin group you don't even need to do that. I don't mind having security if I have a need for it, but in this instance I don't. I'm the only person with access to this machine, & it's just gonna be used for video files. Also, & I realise this sounds trivial, but HTF do I delete the System Volume Information folder? I've turned off monitoring for that drive, & I tried turning its Read Only attribute off, but when I look @ its properties again it's on again. I understand how with the C:\windows & C:\Program FIles folders, etc, that there is stuff that's protected, but if i can delete the SVI folder on my FAT32 partitions that aren't being monitored, why can't I do it on my NTFS drive? Don't tell me that's another feature of NTFS as well???

Anyone own a Sony DVAS300 DVD Player?

Going slightly off topic, I was looking @ 5.1 decoders/amps yesterday. The general idea was to give me some inspration/motivation to start saving up. I had originally hoped to find some sort of all-in-1 hi-fi system that had both a 5.1 decoder & 6 channel analogue input, but I didn't manage to find any that had the 6 channel input. It seems that only seperate 5.1 amps/decoders have the inputs I want [for my Audigy]. I also realised that it would be cheaper to get just a seperate decoder/amp. I had a look in 1 of those little spe[censored]t audio places @ a couple of Yamaha decoders , though the basic/cheaper 1 was £270, & the more errr.. featured 1 was £350. Not exactly pocket change [not for me anyway], but cheaper & better than an all-in-1. Then in another store, I saw a reduced Kenwood deocder/amp that had all the bells & whistles of the £350 Yamaha [except it didn't come with a box or remote, & I was told that it most likely didn't have IR remote capability anyway], but it was only £150!!! Shame I'm broke @ the mo. If I had had the cash I would have rang Kenwood up to find out if it did have remote capability, & if so would have got it.

Quote: Knowing how meticulous you are with that machine, in your case, I don't believe it is your setup. I'll take that as a compliment Quote: My guess is the drive itself. Some weeks ago you tested it and you said it was "broken hearted" that it was not recognized. We had a big yuk about that. It may have presaged what has since happened. A couple of weeks ago? Didn't think it had been that long. Anyhoo, not sure that may be the case this time. [i have my suspicions that it may be something less expensive ] Quote: Anyways, like many who want to put in a modest burner that seems to work and play well with others, I would suggest a TDK VeloCD. Reason - they just work. So does this 1 now - posted same message on another forum & someone gave me the solution, in light of which I don't think it's the CDRW. :fingers crossed: Quote: If you don't want to go that route because of price, my next suggestion is, if you are using Roxio software, uninstall it, and never play with it again. It has been the bane of so many W2K and XP breakages. LOL. Actually, I use Nero [but not InCD] - which I think may be partially to blame here. The way I solved it was to uninstall the secondary IDE channel, then without rebooting reinstall the 4-in-1s, then reboot. Problem solved. Similar thing happened to my CD ROM [Primary Slave] today [except it just stopped working then disappeared in Device Manager], so I used the same method & it sorted it out. Normally I am very careful about drivers & stuff, infact when I get a new piece of hardware I normally reinstall windows from scratch - which I had intended to do when I got my Audigy, but for various reasons I haven't had the opportunity. In addition to this, when I have decided to do a reinstall in the near future, I usually use this as a time for trying stuff out, like new software, trying more adventurous tweaks, beta versions of stuff, etc, so I'm thinking that XP's most likely just a bit flubbed.

    Audigy Weirdness

I got my Audigy about a week ago. Installed it & everything worked fine - well, ok, so I had the same MP3 skipping thing in Winamp that a lot of ppl have, but as that wasn't the main thing I intended to use it for I figured what the hell, someone's [either Creative or Nullsoft] bound to release a fix or work-around sooner or later. Aside from that, everything was just fine - until today. I have an ATI Radeon 64MB DDR ViVo - & I use the Video In prog to record programmes if I'm out or asleep. This also worked just fine - until today, although it now seems the change/problem may have actually occurred/started yesterday. Yesterday evening I set it to record a program whilst I went out. Got home, file was there, so I figured I'd watch it today. Went to watch it & there was no sound. I figured that maybe I'd set something wrong, so I tried recording a few seconds of video to see if that would work properly - nope. I checked all my connections - nothing wrong there. I fiddled about with all sorts of settings to try & track down the problem - couldn't find the cause. So I did a System Restore [i'm using XP Pro]. Great news - sound was back....or so I thought. I tried a test recordings, just to make sure it was still ok, but it went back to not recording any sound again. So I fiddled with more settings, & came accross the Creative Surround Mixer. I saw that the Line In was muted, but I thought this was ok, as with my old SV2 I used to be able to have Line In muted just for playback, but would still record ok. Out of sheer exasperation I tried un-muting it, & got the usual feedback whine that I get when Line In isn't muted for playback. I have my PC hooked to my VCR for both recording & playback, as my VCR is connected to my Pro Logic hi-fi, as my Pro Logic Hi-fi doesn't have a spare mode/channel, so when I want to watch something from my PC on my TV I just switch my VCR to auxillary input. The thing is that now if I want to record with my PC I have to un-mute Line In, & if I want to watch something I've recorded, listen to an MP3, or whatever, I have to mute it again to get rid of the feedback whine. Why is it that I can't mute Line In just for playback? I know I've read something about other people mentioning this in connection to using Radeon AIWs, but I don't have the AIW, I have a 64MB DDR ViVo - & until today/yesterday, it was working just fine. Anyone have any idea WTF is going on with this???? Alien

    Audigy Weirdness

Yup - like I said - it was working just fine, then without me changing anything it suddenly wasn't.

    Audigy Weirdness

Uykucu: Maybe I didn't explain myself well enough - that is exactly what I used to do, but now it doesn't work. If I mute Line In it mutes it for both playback & recording, regardless of whether Line In is slected as the recording source. ConQueso: it's set to record from Line In. I didn't change any settings, it was working just fine, then all of a sudden it wasn't & now it's being awkward.

    ie down boy, down...

There's a setting somewhere that handles this I think - you can change it with TweakUI - something about applications stealing focus, IIRC. However, some web sites are specifically designed to do this - some javascript code, or whatever. Personally, I think web designers who do this ought to be hung, drawn, & quartered!

    XP Disk space resourse hog

Well, for starters - do you use XP's hibernation feature? if not, goto Control Panel -> Power Options -> Hibernate & uncheck the checkbox there - that will save you the same amount of MB as you have RAM. Goto Add/Remove programs, Windows Components, & uninstall MSN Explorer - that'll save you about another 13MB. Reboot into Safe Mode & delete the Tours folder which is in C:\Windows\Help [so it is C:\Windows\Help\Tours]. Also, how much RAM do you have, & how big is your pagefile? [look for C:\pagefile.sys] <edit> Oh, & another thing - in IE, goto Tools -> Internet Options, & on the General tab in the Temporary Internet Files section click the Settings button, then set the Disk Space to Use to 80MB. </edit>

Did you install InCD as well? if so, uninstall just that [leaving Nero in] & see if the problem is still there.

  20. Quote: @ Alien No, it´s revision 1.0. But since 1.3 too uses the 686b southbridge, what is won here? I dunno what's different between the 2 versions [aside from the 1.3 being able to use Athlon XPs upto 2100 (possibly a 2200 as well, but not sure on that)], but now that I've got my Audigy it's all "smooth sailing" here. No more having to reboot when the sound dies, as it did with my SV2. Ok, so there is 1 teeny weeny issue - occasional skipping whilst playing MP3s with Winamp, but that's it. The last time I rebooted was almost 4 days ago, & that was because I installed something or changed a setting [i forget what]. What problems are you having with your 1.0? <edit> Though for the sake of honesty/accuracy I haven't tried any games with it since I got my Audigy, as I have some other stuff that needs sorting/processing then burning to CD so that I can make some room to install any games. </edit>

    1800 AGAIN - Sorry

LMAO. That reminds me of the "good old days" of my ZX81 - now there was something that could get hot - funny thing is, it wasn't the CPU that was getting hot - was errrm...oh damn, I've forgotten what you call them. Anyway, point is that if I left it on overnight, even without it doing anything, the casing of the actual unit would be hot to the touch - hot as in you wouldn't want to leave your fingers on it for long,

  24. Quote: If this does what I think it does then you shouldn't need it since the capability is built into Windows XP. Yeah, but the built in 1 is crap, & often times out when trying to get a time update.
