Got a 98 boot disk? If so try booting with that & deleting it.
-
It's been a while since I fiddled around with XP's CD writing wotsit, so I can't give you exact instructions off the top of my head. If you can bring up the window that normally shows you the files waiting to be written to a CD, then IIRC there should be an option in there to delete them all. Try clicking on that bubble that opens up & it might take you to the window you need.

On a similar subject - does anyone know how to get rid of that incredibly annoying 10 second wait when CHKDSK runs during startup. I have a prog that every-now-&-then causes windows to lock up, causing me to hit the restart button, & would find the experience slightly less annoying if it would just run the scan straight away, without waiting.

Where are you seeing that file shown, in Explorer or a search window? Reason I ask is that last week I had an annoying prob where I was doing a search on a CD to find a file, but the only results it showed were in a path similar to yours [upto the \CD Burning\ point]. This really wound me up as I knew the file was not on my HDD, but on the Cd instead. When I right clicked the file to clook @ it's Properties it showed the correct path. This prob disappeared after a reboot. By any chance did you have a CD in your CDRW @ the same time that had those files/folders on it? I tried it in my CD ROM drive & it worked the way it was supposed to, but in my CDRW it did that weird thing - until I rebooted it.

Quote: What do you mean, i.e. what features are you missing? The interface/GUI doesn't look quite as good, but that's just a minor quibble. It can't move the swap file to the beginning of the partition. It's significantly slower - & when I say slower I mean running the XP version on my drive @ UDMA/100 with an Athlon XP 1900+ & 384MB of RAM appears to be noticeably slower than the same drive @ UDMA/66 under 98SE with a K6-2/500 & 192MB of RAM!!! Not only is it slower, but it's taking longer to do less - it doesn't move the actual folders around. With the 9x version, as well as moving the swap file to the beginning of the partition, you could arrange the rest of the files so that it would be optimised files 1st, then all the folders [i'm assuming this means that the blocks/sectors/clusters/whetever (I forget what they're called) for each folder have been moved all into 1 contiguos lump, so they don't get in the way of files & cause fragmentation themselves] which are the yellow blobs in SD's default colour scheme, then it put's the frequently modified files, & it put's the infrequently modifed files @ the end of the partiton. The XP v. will move these files into order like this, but will not sort or move the folders, which have a nasty habit of getting in the way & hence causing fragmentation. The thing with folders is true with Diskeeper as well, & due to the way it shows files/folders it is more visibly discernible. Some people would argue that it isn't possible for defraggers to move folders like SD under 9x used to, but that is complete & utter BS. I found that it can be done manually, but that's just me with some experimenting in Explorer & using another defrag prog [possibly O&O - it's been a while since I did this little experiment] to tell me which folders are represented by which yellow blobs. The way I see it is if I can [with a lot of fiddling about] organise folders into a more-or-less contiguos lump manually, then surely 1 of these companies ought to be able to make their defragging prog do it automatically like SD used to do under 98?

Get yourself a copy of TweakUI for XP. There's an option in there to disable it. You can get it free from MS's download site.

Quote: I though all dl managers tracked your downloads in their own companies' databases. Well I can't speak for any others, but MD doesn't even try getting server permission from ZoneAlarm so I don't see how it could send any info to anywhere.

Mass Downloader is cool, I've been using it for ages. http://www.metaproducts.com/ That's the addy for the site, & you can get a trial v. from there, but personally I prefer to stick with the v. I have - 1.2.95.
-
Which is probably why it's only available as an upgrade. I wish they did a version that didn't include the DVD player so that during a reinstall I'd only have to install 1 version of it.

Exterminate! Exterminate! Grrrrr.... Why I oughta....
-
Ah, but does that mean that they just won't bother making any new drivers for them &/or including them in Windows Update, or that it will actually be impossible to use a non-MS mouse from then on? I realise the 2nd option is unlikely, but with MS you never know.....

making IE 6 handling more than 2 concurrent downloads
Alien replied to thymios's topic in Customization & Tweaking
That depends on how slow the download is going as a single threaded action, & how urgently you need the file. Plus MD's queing function & the fact that with the right settings it will keep trying to get the file until it gets it [for example if you keep losing connection to the server @ the other end], without having to start again from the beginning [well, that works on 99% of servers - some block resuming, in which case it would have to start over]. -
Linux/FreeBSD/Windows NT... Opinions needed plz ppl

Quote: Well I've read the link you've posted (ta btw) and opted for a Windows 2000 / Mandrake 8.2 set up. Im d/l the latest ver from an ftp server at the moment.... *sigh* i'll be here for days on my dialup at this rate! 3 CDs on dial-up????????? Ouch!!! That's gotta hurt. I just hope for your sake dude that you don't get charged for internet by the minute. Look on the bright side - you should have all 3 files by about er....Tuesday-ish. <edit> PS - You do know that some computer mags put the image files for the CDs on the cover disc DVD. right? </edit> -
making IE 6 handling more than 2 concurrent downloads
Alien replied to thymios's topic in Customization & Tweaking
I find that there aren't that many I can't get with Mass Downloader. If it's a small file - less than 5MB - & it doesn't wanna download with MD then I usually just do it the normal way through IE. If it's bigger & especially if it's 1 of several files, or if it starts to download in IE but it goes really slow, then I will do my best to find the true path to the file so that I can get MD to download it. 1 trick I use in these circumstances is to use GoZilla [it's about the only useful thing GoZilla can do!]. I don't actually download the file with GZ, I just get it to detect the true URL of the file so that I can copy'n'paste it to MD. Another reason I like MD is that it uses multi-threading to increase the efficiency & speed of the download [upto the maximum of your bandwidth - assuming the computer @ the other end can actually send that fast ] -
That site recommended I install a CDRW drive....My Lite-On LTR-12101B is now sulking for being ignored by that site.

I dunno what mouse the original poster has, but if you have a Logitech USB Optical Wheel mouse there's a very simple way - don't install any extra drivers!!! Stick with the 1s XP installs during install of the OS. Best mouse I've ever owned, but goes all weird if you install any other drivers - either the 1s from Logitech or the 1s from Windows Update. Oh SMEG! I just had a rather unpleasant thought. You know how SP1 is gonna come with a load of fixes, updates, etc, etc, ad nauseum? Does that mean that it will install newer versions of drivers whether we want them or not? Cos I really don't want any other mouse driver than the 1 I have now, but I don't wanna miss out on some of the potential goodies of SP1. The same goes for a few other updates. With 98SE I just installed any & all updates going, but with XP I only install the critical updates & the others if they are relevant to my system/needs, & have found this to be a good working policy, but will we be forced to have all of the updates if we install SP1????

"both NICs"? what's the other 1 connected to?
-
Yeah, I wonder that too - they have them for my 64MB DDR ViVo as well. Is a pity they don't do a version of Hydravision for my Radeon. & I think it's rather annoying that they only do an upgrade of the MMC & not do it as a full version. I hate it when manufacturers release upgrade-only drivers so that if you have to reinstall the OS you have to install the older driver 1st, then the upgrade. I've got that to look forward to on my Audigy when I get it too - apparently you have to install the 2K drivers on the CD 1st then install the upgrade patch from their site.
-
If it has a VIA chipset & you use the VIA 4-in-1 drivers, simply run the install prog again, & when you get to the AGP section select Uninstall instead of Install.
-
What do you mean you have to change the file on the service pack files? I understand that installing SP1 might replace the file in question, but surely all you'd have to do to fix it again is run the patch & the batch file I detailed above? After SP1 has finished installing [i haven't tried it yet as I'm not a beta tester] surely there would only be 2 sources of the file - the system32 folder & the dllcache folder? Or am I missing something? Also, unless SP1 includes a new version of the file, then how the hell is XP gonna find a copy of the unpatched uxtheme.dll file???

Don't know the answer to that 1, however I use Mass Downloader. The latest versioin is a pain - I foget why I didn't decide to stick with it & went back to v1.2.95, but it's a good prog - I think they also make a free IE plug in that does a similar job..... Ah - just had a read of their website & apparently the plugin version doesn't appear to include the queing function, which definitely comes in handy. It may still allow you to do multiple downloads though. -
When you installed the 4-in-1s did you tell it to install them in Turbo Mode? <edit> That is assuming it is a VIA-based board - am not familiar with that particular mobo. </edit>

Quote: Guess again I don't have that silly lil agent thing running. Its the main app. that you see in the tray. I'm pretty much always listening to music and I prefer it taking up a tray icon then space on the tastkbar. I didn't know you could put the main prog in the system tray, or is it just a shortcut? & if so, why not just use the QuickLaunch bar? Quote: Its actually Motherboard Monitor, and the three temperatures are: CPU1, CPU2, and System. Ah, I see - you're 1 of those rich peeps that can afford a dualie. Reason I don't like MM is it it can't read HDD temps, plus SpeedFan is nice & simple & there's not as much fiddling about to do to get it set up. Quote: Two network connections. DSL and LAN. Ah, I see. You might wanna check out DU Meter then - is a cool prog for network/internet speed monitoring [if you care about such things ] Quote: Thats one of the icons that I mentioned as perhaps being pointless. I used to always remove it post-install, but I left it in there this time as I was using it to quickly get to the soundcards settings as I was messing about with speaker posistioning a lot etc. I could remove it now but it I've kinda grown attached LOL. Well, it looks like I will be doing battle with the Eeeeeeeevil CL tray apps even sooner than I expected - I just checked my bank balance & I have just enough spare to get my OEM Audigy, so will be going into town soon to transfer the money to my other bank that is nice enough to give me a card I can order with. [Indeeeed! ] Quote: My 2nd useless icon. Its displays my uptime on my desktop. The icon being in the tray serves no useful purpose. Actually, this sounds kinda interesting - got an addy for it? Quote: Which icon? but nooope. the 1 that looks a little like the radiation warning symbol - then again, maybe I'm thinking of Bomb Shelter [did same thing - just as badly, but forget who made it] Quote: I use some viewers that load up in the tray too, such as ACDSee, QuickView Plus... but I always close them after I'm done. I just use either XP's built in viewer [forget what it's called @ the mo] & Paintshop Pro for any images, as for anything else - I have Office & Acrobat which covers all Office & PDF files, so I don't have any need for any other viewer. Quote: I used to have QuickRes and ZoneAlarm aswell, but I don't change resolutions much these days (besides I don't think you can get QuickRes to show-up in 2K/XP ?) Ah yes, QuickRes - that takes me back - to the days of 98SE & my Voodoo3. Quote: and I stopped using ZoneAlarm when I switched to something else in the tray that it conflicts with. Oh? what was it conflicting with? I still find ZA works for me just fine.

Have you actually told your mobo to use 4x in the BIOS?
