If it's done in DivX then usually getting the latest version of DivX cures the prob for me. Failing that, get yourself a copy of AVI Info or Movie Type FInder to check which codec is being used. I've found AVI Info the most useful, as it helps to identify obscure non-DivX avi codecs as well.

I realise I could be misunderstanding you guys here, but are you saying that Windows itself won't allow more than 10 connections? Is this a feature of just web serving, or any connections? If it's any, then I'm afraid someone'e been giving out wrong information as I know that you can run an FTP server & have someone else connect to it with an FTP prog [eg FlashFXP], & then start a download going with Mass Downloader which makes 10 connections @ the same time, & have someone else connected as well with another FTP prog [either FlashFXP or similar], which makes a total of 12 connections by my reckoning. I apologise in advance if I've got the wrong end of the stick.

What about the WD "special edition" drives? I've read that they're rather spiffy on their own, but haven't seen any reports of them used in RAID.

The main 1 over here is ParcelForce. I have had 1 delivery from UPS though, & have seen their vans around from time to time. I think we do also have FedEx over here too to a certain extent. Oh, & DHL as well.

Quote: 2. Microsoft do not restrict supply of their products, again to be in a monopoly position a company needs to be actively restrict supply. Doesn't them refusing to do business with some OEMs if they [the OEMs] ship machines with Linux on them count as restricting supply?

Quote: THERE ISN'T NOW BECAUSE BY GIVING IT AWAY FOR FREE THEY KILLED THE COMPETITION. BLOODY HELL, IS THAT TOO DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND ?? I understand what you are saying perfectly. I simply have difficulty reconciling your opinion with reality. I used Netscape way before IE4 was released [because it wasn't my computer & had no say in what browser was used/installed]. Even then Netscape was free, so how does MS releasing another free product kill them off? Especially when they are still around & very much alive, even if their product is crap. If Netscape Navigator was better than IE, then before long word would get around & ppl would use it instead of IE. Why aren't they doing this? Because Navigator is a vastly inferior product. If IE was that bad when it was 1st released, & Netscape was so superior, then ppl would have simply reinstalled Netscape, or if they weren't already using it before then they would have gone looking for it. What annoys me is ppl like you who just assume that ppl are so dumb that they will just sit back & use whatever MS bundles with Windows & not go looking for alternatives if they don't like any of the bundled apps. Also, leaving browsers aside for the moment, let's look @ another app. Media Player. Now, as I understand your position on the issue, because of MS's clout & tactics MS's apps/products are used more often than those made by the under-dogs, right? What's 1 of the most popular apps for playing music, especially MP3s? It's not Media Player is it? No, it's Winamp. It's also free, & it's not made by MS. Why is it more popular? Because ppl like it more for playing music with & choose to use that instead. Quote: That is why I get so angry - HOW do you know that Netscape couldn't have gotten better and better if they hadn't been killed off via M$'s hard hand, anticompetitive tactics ?? Well if, as you say, Netscape has been killed off, don't you think you ought to let them know? Cos they obviously seem to be unaware of that, seeing as how they just released Navigator 7.0 Preview Release 1. Quote: You see, by doing that, they have denied you something possibly better than what they 'forced' upon you. They haven't forced anything on me. If I wanted to use Navigator as my main browser I would. The reason I don't is because I choose IE because it is a better browser. Quote: True, you don't have to use it, but of course NOW, there isn't a decent choice, so you have NO choice but to use it. What do you mean NOW there isn't a decent choice [i assume you mean a decent range/selection]? There NEVER has been. Did you ever stop to consider that perhaps the reason software companies & independant programmers don't bother trying to produce a better browser is because they actually like IE & can think of better things to do with their time, such as creating other types of software. Quote: All I'm asking for is a level playing field, healthy competition and therefore decent choice for the consumer. Is that being unreasonable ? Unreasonable? Perhaps not, though perhaps somewhat naive & idealistic.

Yeah, but you can't backup your message rules & blocked senders list, which is a major pain in the arse. The problem is that they are stored in a different location in the registry every time. Ok, so it's roughly the same location, but it's like where 98 kept email messages by default, the last folder/section of path was some [seemingly] random hex number - XP does the same in the registry with the message rules. What we need is a prog that knows how to find the correct key for message rules, then backs it up, & then when you're reinstalling it can detect where the data should go & put it back.

Quote: Thanks, because if you didn't know about not being able to remove IE, then we don't want to hear your 'opinion' of M$ and monopoly issues. As someone else pointed out earlier, it is possible, if you want to go thorugh enough hassle to do it, I was merely taking the side of those who [in court] have accused MS of making it out to be more difficult than it actually is. Personally, I think the only reason that it can't be actually removed via Add/Remove is because MS don't want you to, not because it would be too difficult. Having said that, I still don't understand why anyone would want to remove IE. Ok, so if you were developing some sort of application specific computer, for which you had created your own proprietry software & wanted to save every last MB you could, then I could see the point. But for most other Windows users? As it has been stated time & again, there just isn't a web browser better than IE @ the moment.

ROFLMAO!!!

yes & no - it can't enlarge all fonts, only variable-sized fonts. As an example, go here: http://212.250.105.231/htmlsite/listings.asp Try it in IE with Text Size set to largest, then do the same in Netscape, except it's called Text Zoom in there. See the difference? Another 1 you can see this with is http://www.icrontic.com/ Sadly, several of the sites who post reviews & articles here on NTC insist on using fixed sized fonts as well.
-
[Purely for the sake of puns] Maybe that's because it really stinks as a browser?
-
It will probably just end up being the same as Nutscrape Navigator 7, which doesn't really show any improvement over 6.2.x, & still has a bug where if you set the text size to 200% you still have to set it again everytime you reopen a Navigator window. Which is really annoying, considering the fact that that's the only reason I use Navigator - because some ppl STILL haven't grown out of the unbeleivably irritating habit of making websites using fixed sized fonts. If IE was able to enlarge those then I could lose Navigator for good, aside from when testing any web work I'd created.

Quote: What I mean is explain yourself in a mature manner. Namecalling and yelling at people will not get anyone to take you seriously. You're just branded as "another bored 13 year old to be ignored." Exactly. Quote: Here, pay close attention, let me show you: Sorry Alien, but all that method does is remove access to IE via shortcuts. It removes your shortcuts to it. The little description at the bottom of the window tells you this when you highlight that option. IE has been highly integrated into Windows and is a requirement for Active Desktop, many Windows Explorer functions, etc. You could find other ways to remove IE, but it would cause much more trouble than it's worth. See how easy it is to be an adult pilsner_head? Thankyou for your politeness, having checked again I see that you are indeed correct. As to MS & the monopoly issue - well I was going to state my opinion, but then I stopped & asked myself "what's the point?"

Quote: And as for the idiot who suggests goto add/remove programs to remove IE, ROFLOL !!!!!! I was the 1 who stated that IE is listed in the add/remove programs applet, & I'd like an explanation for your insult, as I feel it was undeserved. IE is listed under the add/remove Windows Components section.

Quote: Yes, ALLOW US to UNINSTALL what we DON'T WANT (IE, OE, WMP etc etc). Does Window's allow you to do that ?? If so, show me where ?? Go to Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, then click the button for Add/Remove windows components. IE is listed there, & although OE isn't, I'm guessing that as when you download a newer version of IE for older OSs it includes OE, then I'm guessing it'd remove that as well. Media Player is also listed, it's under Accessories & Utilities, then Multimedia. Though why you'd want to remove IE & OE I don't know - there isn't anything better for windows. AS for MP, there is better, but it still has its uses.

Why would a removable HDD cage make a hit on performance? it's still connected to the mobo's IDE controller.
-
Well, I have a Radeon, not a TNT2, but in theory you should be able to do the following:- Display Properties -> Settings -> Advanced -> Adapter -> List all modes, then just pick the 1 you want.
-
Errrmmm... why would you want to?

Bear in mind that it's not really about what brand it is, e.g. Memorex, TDK, etc - it's about who actually made it. Memorex don't make all the 1s that they sell (as I found out yesterday when I checked mine), so maybe SHS & any others are using different Memorex 1s, like a different sub-brand made by a different manufacturer. Though to be honest I haven't had any CDRs that I've written fail on me [as in refuse to read, or have the coating peel off] yet, but then I've only had my CDRW for about a year, give or take a few months. In otherwords, if you find a batch that you don't like due to faults, quality, etc, check who it's really made by, then avoid them.

The only flaw I ever find in CDs is the occasional hole in the aluminium or whatever it is - simply hold the CD with the label side facing a light [you need to be fairly close to it] - this makes it really easy to spot flaws, & saves the annoyance of burning a CD only to find out it's knackered afterwards I tend to buy cheaper 1s in spindle packs of 50. Last pack I bought were unbranded & I had about 6-10 coasters, so this time I bought some Memorex. Only found 1 with a defect so far, & if I can think of a use for it, i.e. something less than a couple of hundred MB it should still be useable. 1 thing I would say about manufacturers - according to a big survey, which I think was done last year - the 1 manufacturer [not brand - numerous brands, much smaller number of actual manufacturers] the absolute worst you could buy is CDs made by Ritek. The only way to find out who makes a CD is to get a prog like CDR Media Code Identifier & stick the CD in a burner & check it [doesn't write any data to the CD or spoil it in anyway]. If you live in the US then you may not have so much to worry about where Ritek is concerned, as IIRC they tend to be distributed in Asia & Europe mostly. <couple of miutes later> Well, don't I feel silly. Just went looking for CDRMCI & tried it out on 1 of those Memorex CDs. Anyone care to guess who made 'em??? Yup - Ritek. Bugger! Well, won't be buying them again. I haven't had any fail to read after useage for a while as there hasn't been long enough time, but in all the tests that were done Ritek came out worst - if you'd read the same report I did you'd understand. <few minutes more later> Ok, found the article, so you can have a read for yourself. Makes for interesting reading. http://www.cdmediaworld.com/hardware/cdrom/cd_quality.shtml

Is there a demo available for the PC version?

Quote: Just how much dearer are "proper" CD pens compared with regular oil-based markers? I dunno about US prices as I'm in the UK, but mine cost me £0.99

Hykster - just playing a hunch here, try the following in this exact order: [*]Turn off & unplug from mains all computers concerned & router & DSL modem.[*]Leave them like this overnight.[*]In the morning plug in & turn on DSL modem & wait until it's doing whatever it does to show it's connected properly to the ISP.[*]Plug in & turn on router [it may need a few seconds to say hello to the modem so wait a few before next step].[*]Turn on 1 computer & try internet & if it works, try other computer as well.[/list=1]Like I said - it's just a hunch, but it can't hurt to try it.
-
No, you should only use a proper CD pen. Inks in other pens can actually eat away @ the CD's coating, which you really don't wanna happen.
-
Don't you mean Paint Shop Pro or Adobe Photoshop? As for documents, you could also scan them in with an OCR prog & save them as Word docs with a password set - that way if someone copies the file off of the CD they still won't be able to change it unless they know the password. Also Word format would be a lot better for reading documents than an image format like JPG.
