I don't think £89.30 is so bad for an Abit KT7A-RAID v1.3 mobo - ok, so I would have liked it if the Athlon XP 1900 could've perhaps been a bit cheaper, but it is the boxed/retail version. BTW - you were saying about Ebuyer's prices being better than Dabs'? I'm glad I didn't get my Athlon from Ebuyer! Dabs__ £158.62 inc VAT Ebuyer_£190.25 inc VAT

I would have had my delivery today, but I missed him again by a couple of minutes. So I rang them up & arranged for it to be delivered tomorrow to the local post office, which is only around the corner. I should have done that yesterday - will do that in future if I miss him the 1st time.

What I meant was check the jumpers on the HDD itself - they may be set wrong - find the info for your HDD & check to make sure that the jumpers aren't set to limit the size of the HDD.
-
Well Abit have made way more boards than VIA & NVIDIA - in fact I'm not entirely sure that some of the poll items aren't just chipset mfr's as opposed to actual mobo mfr's - so what if VIA & Nvidia [or 1 of the others] were taken out & replaced with Abit & Other? 's just a suggestion.
-
Have you checked the jumper settings on the HDD itself? Some HDDs have a jumper setting to limit it to various sizes as certain motherboards can't use HDDs bigger than X amount. I had to limit my mum's new 41.2GB 60GXP to 32GB cos any bigger & her 440BX board wouldn't recognise it
-
Maybe 1 of the moderators/admins can change it for you?
-
Was leaving Abit out of the list deliberate or accidental?

Here's my current desktop... Oh, hey Clutch...guess who was in The Outer Limits tonight.....? to post pics, or not to post pics, that is the question...

Nah, saw that - putting her on your desktop I can understand, but actually naming your PC after her? How does your Mrs [assuming you have 1] feel about it? BTW - how come this forum doesn't support direct uploading of images? I've known other forums that did & was surprised that this 1 doesn't.

Quote: It's funny how some people can put a machine together and it runs great and other can get it to work at all. Whether it be Intel or AMD on ANY chipset I rarely have any problem that takes more than 5 minutes to solve. No one seems to blame 2 huge factors in your systems stability and performance, the user and the OS. Windows is not perfect or will ever be, same with the user. LOL, yeah - it's surprising how many problems turn out to really be PEBCAK issues, or 1D10T errors. Note: I've been guilty of this a few times myself, & probably will again.

STOP errors maybe related to faulty cache memory? NEED HELP

Sampson: It could also be that he might have accidently knocked his PC & the HSF might have been jarred slightly out of place - just enough to reduce the effectiveness of the cooling, so that @ 1Ghz it would be just enough, but @ 1.4 Ghz it might not be enough. Another thing that occured to me shassouneh, is whether or not you have any surge protection for your PC, as 1 big surge/spike might have somehow partially damaged something, or smaller surges over time can cause accumulating damage to your system. I have no idea if this is an issue in your case, but just thought I'd mention it. -
You guys remember what I said about Dabs? That if you order early-ish in the day, chances are that you'll get it the next day? Well guess what - I placed my order just after 5pm last night, went downstairs @ around 12pm-ish & there was 1 of Parcelforce's "sorry we missed you" cards in the letterbox - now that's what I call quick service! I wasn't actually expecting them to deliver today due to how late I placed the order - if I had I would have put a note on the door telling the guy to knock loudly [cos he doesn't otherwise, which means I can't hear it from my room].

Here's mine: Fortrex "Magic" MG-780 ATX Full Tower [a.k.a. that rather big full tower that Maplin sell under the wrong name ] [They call it a "Jupiter Full Tower"] Macron MPT-300 PSU K6-2/500 TMC TI5VGA mobo [w/ 2MB cache] 320MB RAM IBM 75GXP 30GB ATI Radeon 64MB DDR ViVo Sonic Vortex 2 Lite-On LTR 12101B [12x 10x 32x] BTC BCD24XHM 24x CD ROM 3.5" & 5.25" floppy drives [1 of each] Antec EzUSB Realtek RTL8029 based NIC MRi PCI1456 56K modem [just in case cable server dies ] Kensiko translucent blue PS2 keyboard [the ones Staples sell] Logitech USB Optical Wheelmouse Motorola Surfboard 3100 cable modem Eizo Flexscan 9400 20" monitor Those specs are due to change though, I would be in the middle of an upgrade right now, except I must have been asleep when the Parcelforce guy knocked, so will probably have to wait til tomorrow ['s what the card he left said], unless he tries again later today [has been known to happen]. I can't wait - no more sub-Ghz PC!!!

You say that you think CPU heat probs are unlikely, but concede they may be a possibility, so why not eliminate that possibility - check the temps. You could use whatever hardware monitoring prog came with your mobo, or MBM5, or you could try SpeedFan. It's a great little prog that does what most hardware monitoring progs do, but also monitors your HDD temp as well [assuming your drive(s) have a temp. sensor, & the prog can recognise it]. Also its system tray icon displays the temp of whichever sensor you've told it to, so is easier to keep an eye on it. Disclaimer: I have no affiliation with the chap who wrote it, I just think it's a really cool little prog. -

Hey, I just realised - this is sounding a bit like an error that happened with win98 on someone's syetm I had to fix. I know your not using 98 [@ least not that I know of, but that's not relevant], but having read what Sampson just posted I realised that they do sound similar. I know Sampson suggested that you reformat, but it is possible that you might not have to go quite that far - you see I have seen probs like this cured by repairing the MBR [Main (or is it Master - I never can remember ) Boot Record]. In 98 this was as easy as booting with a bootdisk & using the command FDISK /MBR - but XP's command is a bit different. @ least I thought XP had a command/prog of it's own - damned if I can find the little bugger though! 1 time when I tried Linux dual booting with XP & wanted to get rid of Linux I used 98SE's boot disk to get rid of the Linux boot loader & I don't think it did XP any harm so you might be able to use a 98 boot disk to do this with. -
Does anyone know how to change the formatting of the default blank new page in Frontpage 2002 [Office XP]. What I mean is I know how to change it, but I have to redo it again each time I create a new page & it's starting to really bug me. Is it possible to save-over the template or whatever for this default new page, and if so, how? Thanks in advance. edit: basically the thing that bugs me is that even though it appears to be set to single line spacing, you have to actually go into the paragraph properties & set the Before & after Spacing settings to 0 as they [by default] have no value @ all.

Yes!!! it works!!! Thank you! Cheers for that dude That was really beginning to get on my nerves.

Oh come on, surely someone else has had this problem & has managed to find a solution to it??? Having not received any help I decided to see if I could @ least see what FP was doing differently in terms of HTML codes/tags. I made 3 test pages [2 with Frontpage, & 1 with Netscape composer] with just some lines of random letters. I won't bother pasting in the meta, title, header & body tags, as whilst my knowledge of actual HTML code is fairly limited I know enough to see that they aren't relevant here. The code view of the 3 tests is as follows: Composer ehaksdhfskfdgjsdfg <br>sdflglsdhfg <br>sdfgksdfgh <br>sdgklsdfg <br>dfldglksdfg <br>sdlfkgnklsdfg <br> Frontpage in its default form <p>igfjkdkgjjdfgh</p> <p>dfg</p> <p>hldkfghldfgh</p> <p>fdgh;'gh</p> <p>fh;fgh</p> <p>fdh;fg</p> <p>h</p> Note: For those that don't know or who didn't read my previous post the above code leaves a line between each line of text - every time I press return it's creating a new paragraph & leaving a space between it, instead of just creating a new line. Frontpage after I've set paragraph spacing to 0 (has no value @ all by default) <p style="margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 0">fdfgsdfg</p> <p style="margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 0">dlkfglasdjng</p> <p style="margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 0">sadlgflasjfdlkgj</p> <p style="margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 0">sdlf;lasjdkflj</p> <p style="margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 0">asdfklkasdlg</p> <p style="margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 0">s'djfljslfkdjg</p> <p style="margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 0">sadgfsad</p> <p style="margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 0">gl;aksfg</p> WTF??? What is MS playing @? anyone know how to make it do it normally??? PLEASE???

Umm.. just a couple of points - there are quicker/simpler ways to do some of that.. There are 2 quicker ways to get to the System Properties dialog: 1. Keyboard shortcut - Win + Pause/Break 2. Right click My Computer [doesn't matter where, it can be the icon on the desktop, the link on XP's new start menu, or even in Explorer] & select properties from the menu that pops up. To get rid of the existing pagefile, instead of setting both the min & max values to 0, simply select "No Paging file" [don't forget to click "Set"] I'd still recommend you use a fixed sized page file - regardless of what size you decide upon. The reason is that whether you tell Windows to manage the size of it itself or set min & max values to different values [as Sampson suggested] Windows will still change its mind about how big it wants the swap file to be every now & then which means more disk accessing which means slow downs. Setting the min & max values differently doesn't stop Windows from doing the same thing as it does when you allow it to manage it itself - it's just limiting the extent that it can do it to, whereas if you set them both to the same value then windows cannot change it @ all & has to make do with what you've allowed it. As long as you allow it a suffiicient amount there's no problem. -
If it can connect to a TV or VCR then of course it can connect to a capture card - I don't know what outputs a PS2 has, but it has to have 1 of or a combination of the following 3 connections: 1. Ordinary UHF like a normal TV antenna lead 2. Composite video [i think the connector is called RCA - like a phono jack] 3. S-VHS - little round thing about the same size as a PS2 [PC, nothing todo with Playstation] mouse or keyboard connector. Most capture cards have either no.1 or no.2 - dunno about no. 3 tho.
-
They probably did the same as me - used it on 9x & just assumed it could do the same on XP & won't find out until they actually go to try it which is how I found out. Edit: what I mean is they were used to using it on 9x/ME before they moved upto XP & didn't realise that the NT/2K/XP version has been castrated.
-
Hmmm... If they want to make any sales in the UK they ought to say whether or not it supports NICAM.
-
Sorry Sampson, but Speed Disk can only do that under a 9x based OS, not any of the NT-flavoured ones.
-
pr-man - how have you got your page file set up? fixed size, or allowing Windows to handle it? If the latter, then try setting the min & max size to 1.5 x the amount of RAM you have. With previous versions of Windows it used to be 2.5, but now it seems ok to only do 1.5. In fact I'm only currently using 1x.
