Quote: The 4 button ones are just ok but the one i have sucks. I like the MS cordless optical feel, tho i wish they made it without the cordless part 4? Mine's only got 3 if you count the fact that the wheel is clickable.

Quote: Logitech has the "Mac" philosophy on mouses. They are uncomfortable as hell. I dunno about other Logitech mice, but my USB Wheel Optical is just fine, infact it's the best mouse I've ever owned. MS mice on the other hand... I have a couple of friends who each have MS mice, & when I've tried them they feel weird & somewhat uncomfortable to me.

Yeah, Final Fantasy was a good film. I wonder if that's where Linkin Park got the inspiration for the video for "Points Of Authority"?

Quote: Enable install on demand in IE and then visit a website you know has a java component. You should be prompted to download it automatically. Thats how I've always gotten it in the past with XP. Thanks, I'll bear that in mind in future... Quote: That certainly is possible, at least with version 1.4 of the Sun plugin. It has an option during the install as to which browsers you want it to integrate it with, either IE or Netscape 6. Given that I don't have NS6 (I have Mozilla instead), use M$' JVM for IE and am only installing the plugin to enable Operas Java support I leave them both unchecked. Your saying this gave me an idea - I went into Add/Remove Programs & just uninstalled the version that was installed with Netscape, then tried a site with Java on it in IE - worked the way it should do! Now if only I knew where in the registry that other setting for IE was kept....

Quote: I know I said no Creative cards, but how is the Audigy? I take a performance hit with my Live and 3D sound, how well does the Audigy do 3D sound? How about the audio quality? And what about VIA? I don't have that much experience with the Live [i've installed 1 in someone else's system & played a couple of games on it, but he only had 2 speakers], which makes it kinda difficult for me to compare. I love my Audigy though, it's great, & the EAX is nice in Dungeon Seige. The only other game I've played since getting the Audigy is Lomax, & that sounds quite nice too, despite being a fairly old game. I'm not really sure about 3D sound as I'm using my Pro Logic h-fi connected to my Audigy with 1 of those leads that has a 3.5mm jack on 1 end & 2 RCA/phono on the other - sadly my hi-fi doesn't have seperate inputs for surround channels & sub. Overall I'm very pleased with the Audigy - my 1 & only grumble is the fact that CL have made it complient with the AC'97 standard, which means you can't have the Line In muted for playback but still be able to record with it, you have to keep switching it on or off if you go from recording something to playing back stuff. The good news is that this is only done in software, not hardware, so it's possible [hopefully] that they might release a seperate set of drivers that don't have this problem. There is supposed to be a work-around for this - uninstall the drivers then just use the Drivers Only install option when you reinstall them - but I haven't gotten around to trying that out yet [been too busy playing Dungeon Seige ]. Oh, & on the VIA front - I have a KT7A-RAID v1.3, which has the KT133A chipset.

Hmmmm...I don't remember seeing it on Windows Update when I last reinstalled, but maybe I've just forgotten. I did a search over @ MS & it just said that it wasn't hosted there anymore & to check Windows Update! If I did did get it from WU last time, then is it possible that the Sun v. that comes with Netscape could have over-ridden it? I used to use Netscape for certain webpages that are stupid enough to use fixed-sized fonts which has the result that IE's View->Text Size setting doesn't have any affect on them, but have now found a way around this in IE so don't need to use Nutscrape anymore. Talking of which, does anyone know where the setting for ignoring the font size specified in a web page is kept in the registry? I know that it's available via a checkbox under Tools -> Options -> Accessibility, but it's a bit of a pain having to do that every time. I was thinking that if I could find out where the setting was actually stored I could have a go @ trying to write a little prog that would check the state of the variable & change it to the opposite, then use Xteq Xsetup to put a button for it on IE's toolbar.

Talking of Java, does anyone happen to know where I can get hold of a copy of the MS v. of the Java wotsit for IE, so that I don't have to use the Sun 1? I used to get it from Windows update, but it's not listed there anymore.

's a pity you don't live in the UK, I saw Battle.net today in a store.

If you mean what I think you mean, then go into the modem's properties & turn its volume down.

Something else I've noticed - whilst teachers who teach courses with titles like Computer Science or Computer Studies may know their stuff, teachers/tutors who only teach "IT" are [in my experience] the type who'd panic @ the sight of a BSOD. They may know how to format paragraphs in Word & do formulas in Excel, but I've found that all too often they know very little about Windows itself. Maybe they ought to change the name of courses run by ppl like that to "Using MS Office", as to me "IT" includes Windows as well.

Last book I read was Eon by Greg Bear.

This kinda thing reminds me of someone who's a total Linux-head, & hasn't used windows since 98se. He apparently tried XP for about 30 mins then condemned it as being crap - it takes longer than that to tweak it & get all the settings the way you want them & start installing all those little essential apps that everyone has. & then he goes on trying to act like an expert on XP & tell ppl about how bad it is!!!
-
Definitely XP for me. When I have all the spare parts to build a 2nd system, then I may have a fiddle with Linux. I'd like to have a proper play with it, just for the sake of having something to play around with & experiment with, but I can't see me using it as my main OS, or even allowing it space on my main system anytime in the forseeable future.
-
You could always use Linux. It'd certainly save you a few pennies. Note: I'm not a "linux head", I just thought that as this project sounds like it's not really part of an actual business venture, & if you don't want to use :cough: unlicensed MS software :cough:, then Linux might be a viable, & certainly cheaper alternative.

Thanks in advance to any help offered Winzip. Now what's this about the CToem.cfg file? I vaguely remember seeing as mention of it somewhere, but would appreciate details.

Quote: Oh, and Alien, My CD-ROM drive is buggered LMAO @ the mental image this conjured up [an anthropomorphised PC case in prison uniform leaning over a poor defenceless CD ROM drive, with the caption "you're gonna get it now boy!"] Quote: and while trying to decide what to replace it with I considered a new CD-ROM (the cheapest and easiest solution), a DVD drive or a CD-RW drive. I ended up deciding on the CD-RW drive (yet still lack the finances to follow through on it) since I only have a couple of things on DVD-ROM and I have no desire to watch movies on my PC so the extra functionality (and expense) of a DVD drive would be wasted. Ah, right - that's where we differ - I want a DVD drive, as I already have my PC hooked upto my TV, & it's cheaper than buying a home player.
-
Also, why bother buying a 52x CD ROM drive, when you could get a DVD drive for more or less the same price, or maybe a little bit more? Although if you do get a DVD writer then you wouldn't need a DVD reader so much, but I agree with 123 about DVD writers - unless you really need a DVD writer.
