    Win 95 / IE 5.5 / Registry hack / SQL blues...

I WISH I could go into full detail, but it's not good policy to spout off about your companies network over the Internet. I don't have a machine set up like those in question, and believe it or not, I can't actually get one - even though I do alot of the purchasing for small items like desktop machines around here... Grrr.

Don't get me wrong, I agree too. But this isn't a test environment for me to go bounding through with non supported software - I'm with a government department.... I CANNOT install other web browsers, even though I want to.

    Win 95 / IE 5.5 / Registry hack / SQL blues...

I'm reluctant to try to be honest, if it isn't IE, we can't support it.

    Win 95 / IE 5.5 / Registry hack / SQL blues...

Our IP's have an 8 day lease, It would make sense, but this problem can happen anywhere up to five times an hour. Also, these people are on the same subnet as everyone else on the floor - about 20 users, the others aren't complaining about lost network connectivity. On a side note, I've also checked that "Office - Edit Current - Web viewer" setting in Notes specifies only IE as its default value.

    IE 5.5 SP2 Download

Indeed - thats what I ended up doing. It didn't fix the damn problem though. Grrr. Check out the Win9x forum, maybe you guys can help me with the original problem. Cheers all.

    IE 5.5 SP2 Download

Alas, I may have jumped the gun a little, it would seem that is the full package + the service pack, I really only need the SP in this case, the "engineers" around here at work use registry hacks to enforce security policies, if I do a reinstall of the whole thing, there could be trouble...

    W2000 on a Pentium 200

I've had Win2k Server running on an Armada (120; 80 Megs RAM 2 Gigs disk). It could run DNS services, Wins and was the DHCP server for the LAN. Useless for anything other than MSCE study, but it did work, quite impressivly actually. 2K Pro will run fine, assuming you don't plan to thrash your machine, just expect a long install and boot processes, I use mine for study, mostly just reading whitepapers and writing letters in Word.

    win2000

The registry edit allows user specific privellege to the program, without having to change machine wide rights and priveleges. Or, in some cases network priveledges, no point making your regular users into Power users, or building exotic MSI scripts to give access to a simple program, when it can be done at a local level using Regedit. Fact is, the problem shouldn't be there in the first place \

    Windows 2000

You need to install the Loopback device - Add new hardware, other devices, Microsoft: AD requires an active network connection to check to see "who it is" on the network. Either that, or plug in a couple of other machines to your hub. The loopback device "fakes" a network braodcast traffic.

    Windows Messenger

Quote: updates dont reinstall messenger just reinstall it (shoulda been a little more clear) Take a standard Enterprise edition of XP, build it, Uninstall Messenger using the sysoc.inf mod, then run Windows update and try to tell me that it doesn't install, and subsequently cannot be removed. Go do it now, I dare you
  13. Take a logical approach. Start with the minimum hardware - board, one stick of RAM - got onboard graphics? use that, got onboard sound? disable it. Put one drive in, put the DVD ROM in. Thats all, leave anything not necessary out. Remember that Win2k HATES, Fuxx0red HDD's and RAM, I'm picking the RAM is the problem here, get rid of your 128's and buy a 256, RAM costs practically nothing anyway. Start building as needed. Install works fine? add a new component... - one at a time... Install fails? with bare minimum and new RAM, try again with the second disk you have. Works? throw out the old HD Fails, Throw out the board, its useless. Buy yourself an anti static strap.

    Windows Messenger

Just make sure you don't download any patches or fixes for it from MS.com, once installed on an Enterprise ver of XP Pro, Messenger refuses to budge. Which is annoying, especially if you've uninstalled it from 20 machines, and then run the XP upgrades without looking at what they all are.

Sharing Internet Within a 2k Domain

Quote: Can someone run a 2000 domain without running AD? If so I would like to know how..... Sorry dude you can't run a "pure" win2k domain without AD, You can ad 2kservers into an NT domain without AD, but I don't think thats what you're looking for. Active Directory is actually really good IMO. Guy who posted the original message - Built in ICS essentially becomes useless after you run AD. Set up your connection using RRAS under admin tools. Technet has all you need to ge started.

I've had to deal with the exact same issue. This problem requires a registry edit. I don't have the link to the info at present, I'll see if I can haul it up for you.

Mine takes the piss out of all you guys that write down your machine specs, especially those of you who write up "out of the box" Computer City machines.

    "Unique" computer cases...

Hi all. I was wondering if anyone has seen the following done: Like most computer "g33kz" I collect old components... Anything I can get my hands on, I have a surplus of bits that I've assembled into various machines. I don't have cases for them though. What I do have is a roomy computer desk, its made out of Fibre board and malamine(plastic coat) I want to stick a board and some fans into the drawers of the desk. I was thinking that I could bore some shallow holes into the base of the draws and glue some plugs to hold the mobo in place. Other than the dust, which I can sort out with a filter gauze the only problem I can see is that the PSU won't be grounded to anything. can anyone clarify that I won't set my house on fire if I stick everything on a piece of wood?

    Virus question.

Not strictly an "application" I know, but I wanted this to get noticed, and I suspect there is a trojan involved - which IS technically an program... I have a recurring virus on an NT 4.0 server. Every couple of days I'm finding a w32 Nimda virus has found its way into C, the virus is undetected by Mcaffee corporate, until the scanner is run, the system is cleaned, no (apparent) harm done. meaning that the antivirus can see the virus - which is now an old, outdated strain. We have a very effective security policy implememnted, I'd rather not publish the specific details, but there is an effective firewall and port 25 traffic is routed to an email scanner, which automatically deletes anything it doesn't like the look of. All the systems are updated with the newest updates on a regular basis, and the firewall ports are kept to a minium number open - 80, 21 etc Any sugestions on what to look for? The NT system is bare minimum, with only a handful of applications installed. The virus itself is the type that modifies the guest account, giving it Domain admin privelleges, we don't use the guest account here either. I'm confident of the security regarding traffic coming in from the internet, and I suspect that possibly the RAS is to blame. Still if anyone has had a similar problem, I'd love to hear about it.

    stability and reliability

I concur, 2k is a superior product. Xp is aimed at the Mom and Dad market, even the professional version needs a lot of work to fit into a corporate (or professional ;P) environment. Both are about as stable as each other. Both have shown (around here in my place of buiseness at least) that they have similar compatibility problems with older Dos based stuff. I rate 2k over any other MS OS. But hey, have you considered Linux? Its free you know...
