IP Address Question For Small Network

Quote: Why do it? Because in a professional setting there is a strong possibility of adding more workstations (permanently or otherwise) and having a central location to hand out the right information is a much better option. This is especially true if there is no IT person around when a visiting person comes in and needs to hook up his/her laptop to the network, and nobody knows what to set and how to set it. Also, if there is a need for some sort of proxy service, just use RRAS on a Win2K box, or one of the freebie/low-cost proxy alternatives as they can offer a lot more control than ICS was designed to. Yeah, sorry guys my mistake, I neglected to read properly and missed the word "work" in the post. My bad.

IP Address Question For Small Network

I would agree for a large network, but if you're only setting up six machines, why burden the server with the DHCP service? admittedly DHCP Server doesn't do much to affect peformance, but it does count. Also thinking about the administration, if you plan to setup ICS etc, then your not going to be using true DHCP anyway. Of course if your machines are 2000 boxes, you may consider using APIPA, set the TCP options to use an automatic IP addressing, and leave the DHCP service off the server, the machines will allocate themselves IP's.

    A question of consequences

Here is the senario, I'm wondering if anyone can outline what problems may arise. I have two NT Domains, both share the same domain name (I don't know why) the first network has a PDC, and Two BDC's, + a handful of Win2k member servers. All of the clients on the network connect to this domain, they compose of Win95, 2kpro and XPpro systems. The PDC is the DHCP, Primary Wins and Exchange 5.5 server. The other network consists of an NT server which holds a SQL database, and three XP clients, all machines have static IP's. The latter network requires that the database be transfered to a BDC on the first network. The two networks have two way trusts. Normally the networks are connected via a cat cable and the database is simply copied across, the cable is dc'd, sweet as. Alas the cable has been left for more than 24 hours and now the XP machines on the smaller network can see the main network etc, a restart sorted the problem for them, but I'm wondering what the recieprocal(sp?) events may be. Any ideas? - remember there is no DNS on this network.

Yet another reason to NOT like XP.

Cutting a long story short. Since Kodak image viewer wasn't included in WinXP, my users have been forced to use Image and Fax Viewer for a .tiff file that gets sent around our network weekly. The viewer is useless, it is incredibly slow (even on 500 Meg P4's) to open the images, and navigating them is both difficult and time consuming. I have found a way to get the original Win2k viewer running, by copying some .Dll's and OCX files, plus the application itself. even on a 233 P2 the difference is noticibly superior. Now I need it to work on a users P4. The program runs fine, I can save and print etc, when I log on with my domain administrator rights I have no problem setting the kodak program up as the default viewer (which is my objective here) even local administrator rights are sufficient. However anyone with domain user associations cannot change the to program, Unless I give them sufficient rights to do so. I've tried changing the rights, setting up the machine and then changing the rights back again. whilst changed, everything is fine, as soon as I change the rights back, XP reverts to the original (crap) viewer, and I can no longer select the kodak program. I've tried setting the kodak program to run as Admin. I've tried to change the way the program runs with the built in apcompat settings I'm losing my patience. Is anyone aware of a security setting I can change on the local machine? bearing in mind that the server that this machine is attached to an NT 4.0 Server, and that the domain rules will most likely override security settings at logon. Thanks in advance.

    Windows 2000 Server Question

I don't think you'd want to try. There would be alot of (illegal?) work involved. I use it at home (until I finish my current job) It runs like 2kpro. Drivers for voodoo cards and modems etc seem to be all the same. I've never had any problems. It does require a slightly higher spec machine. And if you want to use it properly (install AD) then you'll need a second computer at least. Active Directory requires an active network connection to install, but there is a way to get around this, using a piece of virtual hardware. ICS works fine, but if you're serious you can use RRAS instead to set up a networked internet sharing solution. I rate it.

    Internet Connection Sharing Question...

Nor I, this is the one message board I come to that I don't flame at. And I suspect we are talking about different perspectives of his problem. I guess we won't know until he replies. Ciao

    Internet Connection Sharing Question...

Where does he say that he is using an IP instead if a name? He said he was connecting to the website, receiving data (Quote of the day) and then being d/c'd. As for the DHCP, why would anyone setup a DHCP server to receive an dynamic IP adress? Or a DC, or even a member server? Servers should alsways have a static address. And if he is already connected to an existing network with a DHCP server, logically he isn't going to be able to put another DHCP server on the network, because then he'd need to create a scope of new adresses and authorise them into AD etc... Seems like a lot of hassle for two IP's In all fairness though we need more information to draw a conclusion. What sort of network, can he connect without errors, what changes have been made to the machines etc... I'm still going to go with a hardware fault, either on the computers or external, like at the ISP. How about an update Lotus?

Anyone here use Linux as 2nd OS?

I rate RedHat 7.1 Caldera 2.x distributions are pigs.

    3dfx with Win XP

Did you get the WHQL files, or third party? I found with mine that the resolution gets mangled if I set it to 32bit colour then resize, but if I resize first then change the colours it works fine.

    win2k mysterious crash problem.

Maybe you could try running SFC.exe (system file checker) from Start > Run Either that or look at a registry checking utility. You DO have antivirus software don't you?

    what's the best ms os?

I won't quote Raa here, so as not to fill up the board, but I agree entirely. XP is mearly Win2k with "family" options. Completely unreliable in an office environment, due to its resource abusing structure and hopeless security 'upgrades' (even with the AD tools and patches). Why would users need administration rights to use Microsoft Photo editor? and not to ad extra hardware? My 2000 machines can run on minimum spec boxes and laptops, be secure and still play games, make movies and I don't need to spend half an hour removing NPNP applications like MSN messenger. And in my opinion the only reason it runs an NT platform is because of the disgusting travisty that ME was, proving that the old 9x infrastructure was finally dead.

    Emergency.

Using the true administrators logon, you should be able to 'Take Ownership' of the files, under the security settings.

    Internet Connection Sharing Question...

Quote: It sounds like he is having DNS issues. On YOUR pc, open a command prompt and type: IPCONFIG /ALL ---> Record any DNS/Wins settings and insert those into his NIC properties. Also, you could *TRY* to set his DNS/WINS IP addresses to point to your PC (typically 192.168.0.1) via Win2000/98 ICS. You also, if $$$ permits, setup Win2000 Server and setup the DHCP scope to issue out these IP addresses for *BOTH* of you. The first suggestion should work though.... Good Luck! How do you figure DNS is at fault? And how does a DHCP server allocate itself an IP?

    win2k mysterious crash problem.

Try downloading the HCL compatibility utility from the MS website. I suspect it is a hardware problem. When the system freezes, can you use your keys to navigate the computer?

    Exchange 2k + Win2k PDC Problem

Thats funny, I would assume that "server1" would be the GC for the domain. Are you the same Atreyu that posts at supercars.net?

Windows XP taking over my pc

Quote: thnx guys =) Why is NTFS better? I mean, it does give more security, but doesn't it kill more space? also, all that stuff about it fingerprinting the pc . . . was I wrong? You loose a staggering 2 megs per gig of disk space.

    Exchange 2k + Win2k PDC Problem

I believe the problem revolves around the FSMO roles that the "PDC" allocates to itself when you start a new network. There are five roles: More detail can be found here. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q197132 We were discussing this at a rescent MOC course. The FSMO roles can be placed on other DC's, I think that the Infrastructure role is at fault. Although I'm not qualified (yet!) to help you with the transaction, I'm sure there is information on MS.com regarding changing the roles.

    Norton Personal Firewall

Quote: Well it shouldn't need to have dynamic IP on (unless Norton is doing something silly) - just set the IPs manually and set primary DNS and gateway on the clients to 192.168.0.1 Otherwise, if you do have to use dynamic IPs, since your client PC is being assigned such a silly IP address, you should look into making sure that your DHCP server is working correctly. ICS won't work in a 2000 environment unless you're using DHCP, thats why it isn't reccomended for Server - server relations. At least, thats what I've been told and verified.

    Internet Connection Sharing Question...

I guess, if you haven't made any changes to the network settings the problem would lie at a hardware fault, maybe a NIC or the CAT, or whatever medium you're using. - Installed any web based apps recently? has he (bonzai etc - yuck!). Whats the connection to the internet? Cable, dialup? Checked the error logs?

    Help! USB stinks!

9x systems aren't known for thier USB capabilities, then again NT isn't at all. 200 seems okay, Xp is good. No one tell me that ME is good for anything!

    Help! Compatability mode in 2k

You need to install the support tools (win2kpro CD 1) under /support/tools The program is called apcompat.exe, which you can activate from the start = Run menu. It's the same thing that XP uses, but it looks a little less refined. Its still pretty simple to operate though.

    Clutch!

You've mentioned before that you run EPO on your network. I've just been given the task of managing it here in our domain. I was wondering if you could help me out with the answer to this question: All the clients are running McAfee 4.5.1, and are configured to grab the Dat files of a server which downloads the updates daily, Is it possible from my computer to force a Dat update? I only seem to be able to configure schedules, I can't find a "run now" command anywhere. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

    Clutch!

Cheers, It seems funny that there isn't a forced update function. No doubt I'll be back later with more questions. Thanks for the help.
  25. The only Norton prgram I rate is Ghost, we use it all the time without errors. I think that sysprep can only be used on a computer with a single partition(?)
