Hi team. I'd like to get a web based business off the ground. I'm weighing up the options of leasing server space, or building my own. I'd like as many pointers as possible on a system that will be able to accomidate the following. It has to be scaleable. Obviously it needs to be reliable, with absolutely minimal downtime. It's not out of the question to suggest multiple servers. It will need to be able to accomidate anywhere up to 20,000 users initially. The primary function of this system will be to offer customers the ability to create and manage profile accounts and send email to each other. It will also need to be able to offer SSL connections for online payments to a local bank account. I'm a bit of a noob with this sort of thing, so outlay as much as you feel like contributing. - What hardware, what OS, pitfalls, additional software, bandwidth, manufacturers etc. Cheers guys and girls.

Sorry about the long post, but you guys are going to need all the facts... I have 2 servers connection to five sites. Each site has a localised DSL connection end to end for traffic. Both machines are 2003 server SP1. All desktop machines connect to the servers via Microsoft Remote Desktop. Mostly XP machines. So far, everything has been working to an acceptable standard except for one site. Periodically, 1 user loses all of his desktop icons, they appear as a "default file" icon and won't link to the application. The other user randomly loses her profile. I have no idea what the problem is with the first user, no other client on any of the networks have the same problem. The second users .DAT file seems to be the issue, it's locked by something when she logs off. I have a very basic GPO in AD for basic rules, specific to the organisation, not the containers that I put each sites users in. I've allowed multiple log ons in TS, It made no difference turning it off, but I thought it may be something to do with that - no. I think I can rule out a virus, as these issues are only happening to to users, not the whole organistation. Does anyone have ANY ideas they can offer?

Terminal services is doing my head in!

An American Psycho fan...that is one of my favorite lines from the movie. Still need to find the book..haven't read it yet. The second user is definitely having .dat issues. I don't have the service.exe off the top of my head, but each time I try and remove her from it the system hangs and reboots. I've set her up outside of the container her account was in and given her a new logon name. deleted some crap out of her h: drive and not added her to any of the exisitng groups that I have set up. I guess we'll see what happens... As for the first user, I beleive I may be looking at a connection speed issue, that is the only difference between this site and the others - its only half the speed (but there aren't even half as many users). An upgrade is scheduled, guess I'm going to have to wait and see. - Thanks for your input dosfreak. -
Hi all. I have a Windows 2003 server SP1 terminal Services solution that I'm having trouble with at present... I have two servers, one is the "PDC" for the domain, the other is the TS box. Everything has finally been set up. All that is left is a printer issue. There is too much info to post on the groups, permissions and usernames etc, so instead, can someone tell me: What should I be looking at if my users cannot select a "default printer" under their profile? I've looked at GPO's, Groups, permissions rights etc. I've tried using settings such as SETDEFAULTPRINTER under KIX scripts at logon I've moved the printers around and I'm still stuck? Can anyone shine some light on this for me?

Hi all. We are looking at implementing a terminal services network for several remote groups here at our office. Without going into too much detail, we have proposed two servers, with clients connecting via a VPN through a national Telco product named PON (private office network). We will have both servers here, connected to our outgoing routers for Internet access and email etc. The two servers will be XP Server 03, the first will be acting as the "PDC" the second is managing the connections from the clients. Can someone point me to some good resources regarding the relationship between the two boxes? I'm assuming that the clients will authenticate to the "PDC" and then be passed over to the TS box to work, but its been a while since I did anything like this (I'm actually supposed to be the companies sales manager...) and I need to brush up a bit. Best regards -

Hi all. Just wondering if there is anyone out there that has one of these machines. I have a base model Celeron 2.6(8? - can't remember) 256 (probably slug speed DDR, haven't checked.) and a 40 gig el cheapo disk. I'm more than capable of adding all the stuff to the machine, the only issue I'm having is getting the damned thing apart. I've figured out the first two steps, but I can't get the face of the box off. Until I figure it out I can't put any IDE's in it, or get access to two of my ram slots... grrr. Of course, there doesn't appear to be a schematic for it on the net - after a fairly solid gooogling I can't find anything except the useless end user "this is a PC" PDF. This is the first PC I've ever brought from a store, and the only machine I've had with a legit OS, I'm happy to pull it apart, but I want to avoid physically breaking anything, there's also about a million cable types I'm not familiar with stuffed inside. Can anyone shed some light on this delimma? Cheers.

Start / Stop - running process/service - batch files
Catdog02 posted a topic in Customization & Tweaking
Hey guys, I need to throw a couple of batch files together for a 2k server to stop the Nav for Exchange service so that the mail can be backed up by the tape backup. Once its backed up, I need to start it up again. The Backup software can call .bat files before and after backups, so I'd like to keep it simple with good old fashioned commands. Can anyone point me to a pre made reference? I was never that strong on commands and I'm too busy to research right now - this is due tomorrow. Cheers. -
All - We've been tasked to setup a new server at our local private hostpital, The network is only reasonably small - 1 PDC and about 25 Clients. All standard stuff with the exception of a third party program running on the server and a seperate instance server operating outside of our control on the network - providing a database service of some nature (not important in the equation). We have windows 2003 SBS on a grunty IBM server to deploy, its going to be running the FSMO roles, Exchange, and DNS. It is replacing a 2000 Server box with the same services (minus DNS). Our Internet connection is a Secure Business Internet system provided by the local Telco, Which essentially is a sophisticated DSL modem with encrypted channels to the telco's internet access points. This box is allocating IP addresses to the clients, this is not going to change at all. What we're after is some advice on the easiest way to replace the current PDC with our new one; keeping client data and mail, and not having to recreate AD or any profiles for our clients (which are mixed 2k, 9x etc) My biggest concern that I'm hoping someone can address is the relationship between 2003 SBS and 2000 Server - will they "talk" to each other initially - if I were to add SBS to the domain as a Memeber server, then promote it to PDC? I've got about a week, so please, get cracking with some replies. Regards.

Guys and Girls (if there are any). Tomorrow I have an urgent job for a client thats going to involve changing POP3 accounts on a windows SBS 2000 installation to SMTP Queue (ISP managed email). I've set up static ip on a nokia dsl modem they're using. As you're probably aware, the POP3 setup at the moment has the Exchange box downloading POP mail and delivering it to the clients on the network. The new setup is going to have the ISP's mail server send email straight to the server at my clients site - which will then be sent to the outlook clients. I need to know how to change the accounts from POP3 to SMTP. Unfortunatley, I haven't had a chance to look at Exchange 2000 and I have NO idea at all what I'm supposed to be doing. Please; if you have any pointers - post them ASAP. Cheers.

Use a Wizard and curse alot at the faulty DSL modem on the network.
-
Its probably not very rellevant, but Win2k / 2k3 SBS has built in POP3 functionality.

So, you wanna create your own Active Directory network, eh?
Catdog02 replied to clutch's topic in Networking
Got anything on ISA configuration, setup and mainenance? -
Active Directory won't run without local DNS. I suspect that the settings you're looking at are external addresses for Internet named traffic, are you sure there is only 1 NIC in the machine? Normally there'd be two - one for your internet to pass through, the other for the server to provide local services. I'd point the finger at the link between your machine and the rest of the world. That being said, if anyone knows the answer, Clutch is the guy to ask.

All. The story is long winded, but basically I have NT SBS 4.5 on a "last legs" machine. It was running MS Proxy and Exchange SBS 5 - it is also the PDC. The whole system is corrupt, so we've built an NT4 box next to it. Unfortunatley we don't have any SBS disks, and we've had to use individual installations of Proxy 2.0, Exchange 5.5 and NT4. The problem is as follows: The SBS Exchange is using MS POP 3 Connector, sucking down email from an Internet server, and until a couple of days ago, delivering to user Mail Boxes. (the reason its stopped working is unknown) Apparently MS hasn't released POP3 Connector for "normal" exchange, and without the SBS installation disks, we can't remove the existing PDC. Our BDC is now handling the Internet connection (FYI) Can someone tell me how to replicate mail between normal exchange and exchange SBS, so that our good machine is acting as the Internet proxy, and the mail server for the clients, whilst the other machine collects mail from the POP server outside the network? Cheers Nate - New Zealand.

All. I have been tasked to build an XP Pro machine ghost image for a group of low level users. I want to modify the way XP handles profiles when a user logs on. At present, the default profile is the "classic XP" look - Stupid start menu, offensive background and microsoft homepage. I want Vanilla flavoured Windows all round - original Start menu, our Intranet homepage as default and boring blue background. I also want one shortcut to a third party program that is installed. I don't want messenger or Outlook express in quick launch etc. I thought that all I needed to do was create a local admin account, modify the desktop as I saw necessary, log off - take away the admin rights of the account and rename it to Default User.Windows (replacing the original) - That way, when the next new account is created and logged on, the settings are taken from that folder. For some reason, the system keeps reverting to ugly XP settings, leading me to believe there is another folder someplace else than Documents and Settings. Any suggestions? FYI: No Roaming accounts - they are prohibited - this has to be done locally. I want to avoid "exotic" registry hacks if possible Security will be dealt with by a pushed out policy, so rights assignments aren't important. Cheers.

How WinXP Pro deals with Profiles.
Catdog02 replied to Catdog02's topic in Everything New Technology
Sorry - I wasn't very accurate in my first post. That is the solution I've already tried. I'm wondering if anyone knows of another folder or file that needs to be renamed. Cheers ) -
I've played it through both "stories". I give it a 6 out of 10. I don't think its worth buying new unless you're harcore about gaming. The new saber abilities are nice, but there isn't much new here.

Hi all. I've just started a new job and I've been asked to try to sort out an issue occuring between our NT4 PDC and the XP Pro clients. The last guy that worked here tried some sort of workaround by installing the Win2k/XP Time Service on the NT box, but it isn't documented so we don't know what he's done (if he did anything in the first place.) Regardless, it doesn't appear to be working. Has anyone come across a solution to getting the two versions of WStime working together properly? I suggested syncing with an external source such as time.microsoft.com, but the policy in place here dictates that clients are absolutly not allowed to access the Internet - Port 80 or otherwise... Any help would be great.

Cheers guys. I'm going to go with the tried and true Registry hack method that Microsoft seems so fond of..... As soon as I get permission from my manager.

Hi all. The following is a little bit long winded - sorry. Okay. I have a win2k server with a Nic bound to TCP 10.0.0.1 - 255.0.0.0. It runs FSMO, DHCP server and DNS services. It's going to have half a dozen clients attached to it. I'm using DHCP for study purposes, otherwise I would have assigned static IP's. It has PC Anywhere installed, but thats about it. This Nic is plugged into a small hub. It has a second NIC bound to TCP 192.168.0.x I say x, because I'm not sure what it needs to be for what I'm attempting. The cable is plugged into a NIC on a PC that is running Win2kPro. I'm trying to use the Pro machine as a firewall/dial up Internet connection. It has Zonealarm installed. I would have used a Linux box, but I haven't got any idea how to set it up, and I don't have time to learn. So, the crux of the question is - Can 2kpro act as the firewall on my network? how do I share the Internet connection? and what do I need to tell my clients that want Internet connections? I've never been able to get ICS working, this time it isn't much different... Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi all. Anyone know if its possible to download SP2 for IE 5.5 as a stand alone package? If I try to get it from MS I can only choose to download a 500kb installer program - I want the full package to put on a CD. Anyone got any links? Cheers
-
Right. We've been having a problem here at work with with a group of Win95 machines. They all use IE 5.5 to view intranet links to a SQL database (don't know what type) which are URL's delivered through Lotus Notes 4.6. The users can open approximatley 5 - 15 of these links, (they're just printing out the data from the database onto the screen, and then out to a Laser Jet.) and then IE packs up and won't display the text data on screen. If I try printing - it still prints properly, but the users need to check the accuracy of the output beore they print. So basically after X URLs, IE stops displaying text. The background is still there. The only work around is to restart and continue until next time it happens. I've tried: 1. Clearing the Temp Internet Folder - No. 2. Forcing Memory mangement to use a "proper" amount of swap space (2x RAM) - No difference 3. Resizing the IE temp folders buffer. Some Yahoo around here uses registry hacks to lock down settings such as this, so I had to find the keys and fix them up. I took it from 20MB to 400MB. I remember changing three keys, alas, I can't remember which ones, and someone has generously borrowed my documentation and not returned it. -made no difference anyway. 3. I suggested (tactfully) that the user slow down the rate at which they open the links, I can only assume he did this - the machine is a 600Mhz + Pentium 3 with 128MB RAM - I was thinking maybe it was Win95 limitations causing the problem. 4. Installed SP2 for IE 5.5. - Again, no difference. Has anyone encountered anyhing like this before? perhaps I've missed something? Two others have had a look at the problem, and I don't believe they had any sucess either. I consider thier skills to be of a higher calibre than mine. Regards
