  2. I have 2 "hot fixes" that will not install through the normal windows update and when given the "Setup Canceled" window it lists the following Q numbers. Q318138 Q323172 When I went to MS site to see (google search) what they are and how to install them it I didn't find a how to for NT, only 2000. Can I run these 2000 fixes on a NT box? Yes I'm fighting a virus/worm.

MS 2000 fixes on NT 4.0

Thx for the quick response! I do understand that NT 4.0 is old and the systems (work puters) will be replaced soon. It is a very primative enviroment for most that post here but until now has been the backbone of the office here. Thx again for the help and hope they don't buy a bunch of HP's. 8)

    Connection Manager for DSL

I just got SBC/Yahoo DSL and after installing their software I found that Yahoo has their fingers everywhere in my system. BLAWK! Without going into a "Why do they find it necessary" rant could someone point me in the right direction for a low overhead connection manager? I am a nOob so I would like something that is easy to use. I would think that XP would have the DSL version of the dail-up connection thingie. I did do a search on these forums using the key words "connection manager" and nothing really came back to answer this so I'm lead to believe that this has never been asked before or is so elementary as to be a dumb question. I thank you in advance for your help and time.

    Connection Manager for DSL

To update this thread... I tried to run the Connection Wizard and it was a no go. I called SBC/Yahoo tech support up and there is a compact version of there connect manager on the CD. So if anybody else is like me (nOob) and doesn't want all the craptastic stuff that comes along with the install then call up tech support and I'm sure they can help out with a no overhead ADSL connection. With there connection manager my duel CPU 1.25GHz Tullie box (1 GIG Ram) was hanging around 40% CPU Usage in the "performance" tab of the Task Manager at idle, now it is at 5% without there connection manager. That is alot of overhead and I won't go into a rant about "Why do they find it necessary" this time...again.

    LCFINST.Exe (????)

I found out what it was. It was the Intel LanDesk App conflicting with XP. Thanks for your time Wizard.

    Where is everybody?

Brain I pretty much do a "search for" and get the answers i need, also I stalk another forum called 2CPU.com that answers alot of my questions. I like books also and the "help section" of windows works well too. I find I learn better with the above method, and come here for links to web sites. That is a god send for you all to post them here. I meant no offence Brian, just making an observation. I am a little clumsy sometimes with my words and I have a dry sense of humour also which is not a real good combination...all the time.

    SCSI CDROM/BURNER help

I knew there wouldn't be enough info.....sry I'll be running XP Pro with nero 5.5 and an Adaptec AHA-2940/2940U. i checked the card out and found that it is supported by everything from 95 to XP (up to date drivers not withstanding). i will check out nero's, adaptec's and Microsoft's site for compatibility. I imagine that the devices will have to be compatible with all 3??? why are there standards??(rhetorical) thx Sampson for your help ZEHN

    Help! Compatability mode in 2k

WING when i installed W2K i had the same thing but all i did is get the updates from Microsoft and viola!! there it was (but no 98 compatibility in the drop down though but i have never needed it either) i think everybody should get the updates anyway, it just makes things run smoother for everybody. just like that last virus(forget name )that all ppl had to do is get an update to fix it and there are still ppl that don't have the fix. sry bout the rant ZEHN
  20. I like the Raid because my setup is as follows(main system) DVD-master ide1 burner-master ide2 zip 100-slave ide2 ibm gxp60/20G-master ide raid 1 (ntfs)(striped) ibm gxp60/20G-master ide raid 2 (ntfs)(striped) ibm gxp60/20G-slave ide raid 2 (fat32) sure my pci slots are not full but i can add things as i need them at will. i have so much more "built-in" headroom than just the normal ide setup. now this is just my set-up and works very good for me. I still want a duel chip so bad i can tast it but that is a story not told to children to go to bed to. ZEHN
  21. i agree with Bladerunner. If Abit wants to be on the bleeding edge than lets see a IDE Raid 5. For me I'm making that move to SCSI (slooowly) just because it is about as future proof as you can get in hardware. ZEHN

    adding second CPU

hello everyone curantly running 1 cpu in an abit vp6 (cyrix c3) and will be upgrading to 2-1Ghz intel's in mouth or so. will xp see and use the other cpu when the upgrade happens or will i have to reinstall the os again? the activation code is the hassle not the install. I just hate calling MS everytime i want to make a huge change on that system. yes it is XP Pro also. thanks for any help you can offer. ZEHN

    adding second CPU

hello Frank system specs nvidia gforce 256 abit vp6 runing 1-733 cyrix c3 1 gig crucale in 2 512meg sticks tdk 8-4-24 sony floppy maxtor 45 gig hd 98se is installed right now and runs fine. when i try and install xp pro it allways locks up in the same spot through any install i try, see above post. it goes thruogh the code key, the copying system files, reboots, and goes to the windows setup screen(blue with gray text) loads drivers, gets to the place where the text at the bottom of the screen says setup is starting windows and locks up. control+alt+del doesn't even work i have to push the reset button. i have built many systems in the past but this is my first duel chip and/or xp. i have a 2000 machine i'm using as a main system now. OK...just tryed a claen install and lock up in the same spot again, at the blue windows setup screen and it says at the bottom setup is starting windows. went the default settings in the bios and went through each page just to see the changes it made and everything looked good there. if the mobo is bad then why did linux run on it, i just can imagine the board being bad after three months of up time well over the burn (72 hrs) in i give to see if doa from the saler. but anything is possible. thanks Frank ZEHN

    adding second CPU

i should be more specific i'm sorry. i don't understand MPC or ACPI the mobo is an Abit VP6 running 1 Cyrix C3 733GhZ...there has never been 2 CPU's in the mobo at any one time linux was running on the mobo last week i let it run for an hour or so before hitting the reset OUCH!! no keyboard comands would work (ctrl+alt+delt) i'm thinking that it's the combination of the 3 that is the problem OS, CPU, MOBO ZEHN
