Personally, I don't see any reason to buy a normal CD-ROM drive anymore, unless you just want as cheap a drive as possible, because DVD drives are very reasonably priced.

I recently upgraded my system to an AMD/nForce solution, and I have to say I'm very happy with it so far. I was also a little worried about getting via. From the posts I've read here and on other forums, it doesn't seem like via chipsets are bad all around, just inconsistent. I have friends who have used via boards for years and have never had a single significant problem. I also have friends who have had nothing but trouble from their via boards. That inconsistency is ultimately why I went with the nForce. It is new and relatively unproven, but I just don't have much faith in via, nor the willingness to spend more money for equal performance (or less in some cases) with a P4. In the ~3 weeks that I've had my new system, I'm happy to say it hasn't given me one single problem. Not one game has crashed, not once has windows crashed. Of course, 3 weeks is not a very long track record to go off of, but I'm just happy that my system didn't have any growing pains after upgrading.

I just bought an A7N266-C mobo (nForce 415-D chipset) with an Athlon XP 1900 and 2 512 MB strips of Mushkin PC2100 DDR. My problem is that the system only recognizes them as 256 MB strips, so it boots up with 512 MB total. I have tested each DIMM by itself, and the mobo still only sees 256 MB each. It's really frustrating, I want my gig of ram! Went to Asus's site, couldn't find any info. Same for nVidia's site. Checked the manual, but it's missing one very important part: no troubleshooting section! Anyone got any suggestions? Thanks! I am happy to say the problem has been resolved. After contacting Mushkin's tech support, I shipped the ram to them for testing. It turns out both dimms were improperly programmed, and when I got them back, they both showed up as 512 meg dimms like they were supposed to. I gotta say I was extremely impressed with Mushkin's tech support, and I will likely buy their ram in the future. They always responded within a day of my emails, and, obviously, were able to fix my problem for me.

I've found it to be quite helpful in the past.

Well, I sent an email off to both Asus and Mushkin's tech support. Hopefully one of them will be able to help me out, though I'm not going to be holding my breath...

I remember being lost at this part of the game too. I think what I had to do was force push the crates at both sides of the hanger. There are hidden grates under them.

OEM Model#: 990809 Special FedEx Saver Shipping $6.00 -- It looks like I got the 512MB PC2100 DDR SDRAM SPECIAL (the picture on Mushkin's site looks just like my DIMM). I highly doubt the DIMMS are ECC or registered, they weren't expensive enough. The manual does specifically say no ECC RAM, but says nothing about requiring registered RAM...

Try booting off the XP CD and choosing the recovery console instead of setup. You should get full read/write access that way. I know it's saved my butt a few times.

I haven't totally gotten into the single player game. I'm just sorta putting up with it until I get the lightsaber, which is when I know the game will be lots more fun. Multiplayer is absolutely awesome, though, even if you completely suck at it like me. It seems like they got most of the force powers just right, and the lightsaber combat is lots of fun.

For those who don't feel like clicking the link, I'll summarize: the payload for CIH (aka Chernobyl) will trigger on the 26th of April. First, this virus writes garbage to the entire hard disk, destroying all data. Then it tries to flash your bios with garbage. So not only do you lose all your data, you also have to replace your bios/motherboard. As someone who has had first hand experience with the Chernobyl virus and its payload, I strongly recommend you run Norton's CIH removal tool (available from the link I included). If very many files have been infected (ie more than just the Kazza one), I also recommend formatting/reinstalling windows. From my experience, all exe files that have been infected will run much slower, even after the virus has been cleaned. If you're using WinXP (or any NT variant), you should be safe from this virus, though considering the amount of havoc it wreaks on 9x boxes, I would tend to err on the side of caution. Good luck!

Has anyone actually had any experience with an nForce motherboard, good or bad? I'm looking at getting an Athlon XP, and the nForce looks promising to me. I simply refuse to buy Via, as I want stability and speed in that order. Every review of an nForce motherboard I've seen only focused on its speed, and how it is slower than the K266. It seems that none of the review sites (that I've found, anyway) give a hoot about stability. So if anyone has had any first hand experience with an nForce motherboard, I'd love to hear about it.

Since XP won't be able to read the Linux file system, it won't be able to add it to the boot loader. So you'll need to install XP first, then Linux, and XP will be listed in Linux's boot loader. Also, to my knowledge, you will have to use FAT32, since I don't think Linux will be able to read an NTFS file system.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't count on Eidos fixing the problem, especially cause I don't think they do FF games anymore. After flip flopping between XP and 98 several times, my solution to this problem was a bit pricey, but guaranteed to work: I just bought a PS2. The graphics suck (not that the PC version looks great nowadays) but the music is far better.

Yeah, MSN is really only a good option if you intend to have it running all the time. It drove me nuts constantly opening when I would just want to check my email. And despite turning that option off in outlook express, it would still open every time.

My system is sharing IRQs, and it works fine. Seriously though, I've had problems with IRQ sharing too. Especially with my SB Live and Win98 SE. I tried every combination of BIOS settings, forcing IRQs, etc, and none of it worked. I found that removing unnecessary items from the computer drastically reduced the number of IRQs that were shared. Specifically, removing my DVD decoder made my network, video, and sound stop sharing. Now only my sound and USB share and things seem to work. So I guess you might want to poke around in your system and see if anything can go.

Haven't tried it with 1.09, but the best character editor I've used is Jamella. I think the latest version is supposed to work with 1.09. http://jamella.cjb.net/
