I know this is a basic network question, but when I start my 2nd machine I get a "the drive or network connection is unavailable" message refering to a shortcut on the desktop to my 1st machine. It doesn't do it on the first machine. On both machines I can access the other computer ok, but I have to type the username and password each time I start the machines. Both machines have passwords and are using administartor as the user. How can I eliminate the username & password each time I power up?

Login error message when starting 2nd machine

Yes on 2k. What else do you need? OK I will re-word the question........How do I elimate entering the username and password when the machine boots to log onto the network or when I try to access the other machine? -
I understand the newer MB's do not have PS/2, serial and parallel ports anymore. I thought USB wasn't accessible in safe mode. Has something changed in 2k and XP that I don't know about?

PS/2, serial and parallel ports being phased out?

I thought the USB in safe mode was a Windows thing. The less drivers the better in safe mode. -
Here is a article that everyone interested in installing, or thinking of installing SP3 should read: http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/26698.html

How do you like your DSL? What is your max download speed? I have 768k service and obtain about 750k.

I wasn't too sure how to list this. I put this problem under another forum as a "beeping" problem with the drives, but beeping isn't the right term. It would appear that it is a power supply problem, BUT this has only happened the last 9 months in the 1 3/4 years I have had this setup with the only changes being a different 2nd USB camera and more memory (256 to 512). I have a Epox 8KTA M/B, a AMD 700 T bird, a 20G and a 40G Maxtor drive, burner, CD rom, audio card, modem and NIC. When the drives are in standby or at bootup (with no pattern), sometimes they are fine, other times they hang, the drives won't spinup right away and will hesitate that the bios doesn't always see the second drive on startup or the system pauses when the drive(s) start up at a request of the system, either to open a folder or start a program. I have the timeout at 10 minutes in pwr mgnt. as I always have had to help keep them cooler since they sit on top of one another. I have a 300w PS and it would seem that it is a current issue, BUT this is the same setup (almost) as it was when new and the prioblem only recently started showing up. I know it is easy to blame the supply, but I don't want to run out and buy another supply on the chance that really is the problem. The different camera has the same current ratting and the 256MB of additional RAM can't really draw that much more current, besides this is a 12volt issue IF it is a current problem with the drives not 3.3 or 5 volt right? Also the drives emit a strange squeal that is a cross between a beep and a mechincal squeak. I have run the Maxtor diagnostic program and the drives pass.

I think it was a thermal problem. I have moved the floppy to a 5 1/4 bay and separted the 2 drives by a half a space and added another exhaust fan. The case is Enlight with a separate cage for 1 floppy and 2 HD's or similar combination.

Hummmmmmmmmmmm.....................lets see the neighbor wants to restrict access to [censored] sites and her next door neighbor is Ron Jeremy...............Hummmmmmmmmmmm! Love your handle! How's the mother next door? Just a little humor, hope you don't mind, but with a handle like RJ I would doubt it! P.S. I was wondering how many reconized the name? Apparently none in this forum except me. BTW: I always liked John Leslie better.

Running 2k, a Verizon DSL modem, a Netgear router RT314 in the DMZ mode, and 2 computers without a firewall, what can I do for security other than passwords? I really don't want to run a firewall, the program ICUII needs UDP and TCP/IP port ranging that the 314 can't do and I want to share between both computers. If you use a password on 1 user account that you logiun with, can't someone login under any other accounts that don't have a password as the administrator account for example? I'm really confused on this issue of security. To put it another way, I want file sharing between both computers but not file sharing on the internet.

Security using a DSL modem and router in DMZ mode

I'm not happy with the Netgear RT314 router I have. The biggest problem is tring to understand Indian dialog, as in the country of India! That's where their tech support is based! It's bad enough to farm it out to another call center, but India? Can't understand them! The router itself is discontinued and I couldn't get the newer firmware loaded. I needed port ranging which the old version didn't support. I was looking at the Linksys routers, they seem to be the most popular ones like SoundBlasters, but hopefully without all the software problems that Creative has and lack of enough tech support people. -

I do appreaciate all you wrote. I am envious of your knowledge, but as it stands I really don't know where to begin since there are so many issues. Imformation overload I guess. -

Yea, ok...............I started to look at that link you gave, If I understood half of that I probably wouldn't be here asking these questions in the first place! Having said that, questions: 1. If you DON'T have a browser open, does that change the accessiblity of the computer from the outside? 2. The other user accounts, are they accessible if you aren't logged on with them? In other words, if I log in as a certain user w/ adm. rights, can someone type 'administrator' and get in if it didn't have a password? I do know you can filter ports, but I haven't done that. It has been more of a problem to open them rather than close them to the programs I want to use. Namely the music sharing replacements to Napster. The video conferencing program ICUII needs UDP AND TCP'IP port rangeing that the Netgear doesn't do, hence the DMZ setup. -
Would that give me any more security after the system was on since I am on a DSL connection? It is only myself and my wife that us it.

Why is A+ certified worthless??

I sent the drive back to Maxtor. I subsistuted another Maxtor drive (5400 vs 7200), imaged it and transfered files to the other partition. This is my backup drive with a 2nd O/S on it. So far so good. I monitored the voltage off the 12v bus into the drives with a digital meter and Motherboard Monitor. The lowest I saw was 11.7v This was at spinup. Normaly it sits at 12.03v, MB Monitor shows 11.9 I don't feel it is a PS issue, I don't overclock and it is only a 700 T-Bird.

This doesn't seem to be a thermal problem. It happens hot or cold!

Logitech has very bloated software from my experiance especially with their cameras and it is hard to uninstall all of it especially in the registry! Logitech's video quality, even on their best camera is very poor. If you can still get the Kodak camera DVC325, get it and the newer driver. It is one of ther best cameras out there and its under $60.

I have that camera with a Via chipset and no problems. They do have newer software for the camera since the ols software wasn't compatable with some video conferenceing software. Do you have the newer driver from their site? IO beleive you always get that ghenicic warning message with USB stuff, just disregard it and install the newer driver. Be sure you have COMPLETELY un-installed the old driver with the camera unplugged INCLUDING all registry entries. I use Reg. Crawler to search for left over entries since NO uninstaller COMPLETELY removes everything! Get it from: www.4dev.com

I came across these links in another forum I find most interesting on M$: http://www.****microsoft.com/content/whatsbad.shtml http://www.lamlaw.com/ http://www.attrition.org/gallery/ms/ Well it seems these forums are censored! I'll let you fill in the "****" in the first address. I'll give you 3 out of the four: f*ck

Every once in a while, there seems to be no pattern, I get the "Update success" message at bootup even when there has been no hardware or software changes. I don't see a pattern to it, it happens about one in every three or four starts. I have 2k w/SP2 installed.

I am amazed at all the prople that use Norton. You would think that it is the only anti-virus program out there! Has anyone tried System Suite from Ontrack? Their virus program comes from Trendmicro and the updates are free!! The program is much smaller that Norton, It doesn't load at startup either at the dos stage or at the windows stage unless you want it to, unlike Norton, It doesn't have all the side effects like Norton, less interference with other programs. Everytime I see troubleshooting tips on program installations, Norton Antivirus is at the top of the list causing problems! I find Norton overated and bloated. I do have Norton Utilities but rarely run it. I find System Suite V4 from Ontrack far better especially the defrag program. The software is much smaller also. By the way, Ontrack is one of the larger data recovery services if you haven't heard of them.
