I understand on using another PCI audio card. BUT: 1. I am getting rid of this, if it was for me it would be different. 2. Audio isn't that important as long as it works halfway decent and it does. If I want real good audio I have a audio system I would listen to. 3. The card does work and I do have 2 other PCI audio cards, but don't want to use them here on a older board. Quote: It may get you around losing over 55% of your speed for the CPU timing! Ok, you lost me, loosing half your speed on timing??

I stripped a few boards out of this box since I am getting rid of it, but wanted some kind of audio, When it hung with the card in I reset the bios and it apparently change the PPNP OS to no. Why? I don't know. It also changes the processor to a 200 down from a 450. Soyo's bios on this board isn't that great and this is the last bios they made.

Sorry..... I was editing that while you posted yours.

Hold the phone.................. Eureka............ Stop the presses, etc. Would you believe on the top line of the PCI/PNP config screen there is a PNP OS installed and it was set to NO by default I believe since I didn't change it. I did set it to yes and all appears to be fine.
-
Not sure where to do that. There is no conflict that I see. It was IRQ 5. I changed the PNP/PCI IRQ to assign to #5 and it changed the card to IRQ 10, but it still hangs.

Never thought about jumpers. But, no it doesn't. Nice try. It sees the board, but just hangs at the update ECSD or DMI part.

Does anyone know of a program that can read .pdf files? Adobe is too large and slow for me.

Running Win2k w/sp3; when you move a start menu shortcut by drag and drop with administartor rights a warning dialog box comes up stating that it will affect all users. How do you get rid of that annoying box?

Guess what? I did that before you wrote it, or at least before I read it and it worked! I then uninstalled Acrobat! Just wished that the D/L page was clearer on: a. which file to d/l b. what order to install without hunting it up. After you install GS, then install View all is fine after you delete all those other shortcuts since the View is all you use. I also renamed the 'Gum' to 'View' since it is the name of the program.

Quote: Look at that reference page. It's a PITA to set up but GSview and Ghostscript will allow you to create your own pdf files. Once set up, this is very nice. You can get rid of Adobe altogether First off, you click on the shortcut in the start menu and all you get is a open window similar to wordpad with no menu bar! Useless. I clicked on a pdf document and it opened it up, but still no tool/menu bar. Still useless. I right clicked on the image; nothing again still dito! Sorry that isn't my idea of a Windows program!

I looked at the GhostView or whatever it is called and ruled that out right off the bat. Too complicated. I don't know what type of program that is called, but it's over my head. I'm not at the level of being a developer or anything like that. It only allows you to view the document, no print or anything like that without using another program. I just want a trimmed down version of Arcobat to view and print pages. It would be nice to edit those also, but after trying the full version of Acrobat I gave up on that. Learning the O/S from scratch was easier. Are most of these subsistutes similar to that Ghostview?

Thanks, someone else suggested that. I will look at that. Really don't like Acrobat, it's a hog as is I.E and Norton!

I lost the ability of previewing jpegs in the left pane of a folder under the folder name. I'm running 2k. Bitmaps can be previewed! I do have active destop disabled, but I did turn it on to see if it made any difference, but it didn't.

I reinstalled MS Paint, but I still can't preview jpegs when I highlight them in a folder. Just bitmaps! -

Quote: I'd think that an easy way to figure it out would be to simply reinstall it using the Add-Remove Programs icon in Control Panel, but use the Add-Remove Windows Components section of it, rather than the 3rd party program removal section. You bring up another somewhat un-related issue. Using the shortcut to remove that program (non-M$) verses add/remove programs. Isn't both of those the same? One is a shortcut and the other is through Control Panel, right? I will re-install Paint as see if that is it. -

I removed MS Paint from my system. Is that a issue? -
Gee...............6kb/s, isn't your father worth more than that?? How about just giving him a analog dial up instead?

Can the file 'ntuser.dat' be saved and replace the same file in a new install of 2k so I don't have to redo all the Windows settings? I assume that is the correct file. What is the difference between the file in the root directory and the one under my user name in Documents and Settings?

adamvjackson: two things; what does OT mean? and I really don't understand your post regarding my problem since it doesn't have anything to do with long pathnames! -

Quote: I personally set up one account as I want it, then copy that profile (System>User Profiles) to the "Default User" folder under Documents & Settings - making sure to back it up first "just in case" of course Works for me.... That would be ok to create another user on the same computer without re-installing the O/S, but how could that work on a new install on another computer or even the same computer from scratch. I'm talking about re-installing 2k on the same box without spending a hour or so doing all the tweaking on Window size, color, font, position, and the other dozens and dozens of settings that make a customized Windows install. -

I under the same user name. I assume I would do that first. What registry files and how do you do a merge? -
I was hesitant at first to install SP3. I did have SP2 from my first use of 2k. Security flaws? Not M$! Must be thinking of another O/S: http://stacks.msnbc.com/news/838272.asp?cp1=1 Only 65 in one year. Glad I run Opera, not Idiot Exploiter!

I have a chance to pick up a GA-7ZXE M/B and I'm looking for anyone with experiance with that board. I serached for reviews high and low and could only come up with one in German! I found a number of reviews with the GA-7ZX (w/ the KT-133 chipset) but none of the ZXE! I also found reviews of the ZR (I believe it was), but after seraching a dozen or so sites, nothing. The reviews of the ZX weren't that great. I don't know if it was the chipset or the board itself. I'm not a Gigabyte fan, but the price might be right and I'm willing to give it a try. I have the documnentation from Gigabyte but a little insite would be better! I'm not looking to overclock, or to have the latest, greatest, fastert box on the street (especially from a 1 1/2 year old M/B) but something halfway decent. Any input would be great and thanks in advance!
