hey guys, i've got a real big problem with this stupid computer of mine, I'll try and explain my problem... ok, here is my setup: pIII-800, 384meg of ram, asus CUV4X motherboard primary master: 80gig seagate, dynamic disk primary slave: cd burner secondary master: 80gig seagate, dynamic disk secondary slave: DVD drive the first disk has a 5gig windows partition, another 50gig partition, and the remaining 25gig as a stripped volume with the second hard disk what i did: i've had a few problems with another computer's hard disk, so i swapped the cd burner in my computer with this hard disk, i fdisk-ed this new disk(i'm sure i did the right disk) the formatted it. Then i swapped this disk back out with my cd burner... Now it just won't boot. Everything is back the way it was. It is detecting everything fine in bios, it detects the hard disks, does the "PCI device listing", detects for a for a floppy disk, then just stops. it doesn't display "invalid system disk" or anything, it just sits there with the cursor blinking. (if i put a disk in it DOES boot from it). I'm thinking the partition table or master boot record or whatever it is with a Dynamic Disk might be corrupted but i've got NO idea what to do now to test/fix it... Is there anyone out there with any idea what might be causing this, or how to fix it? Would muchly appreciate any ideas/suggestions. thanks guys

um... there's a few ways u can run it... i'd probably be thinking u'r running gtados as win2k has crappy emulation for dos games. try running gtawin in the gta\gtawin directory. or u could also try that compatability thing, right-click on the exe->properties->compatability...

i'd still be putting my money on its DMA... i've had lots of problems with it in the past. right-click My Computer->Manage->Device Manager->IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers->Primary IDE Channel->Advanced Settings. is "Current Transfer Mode" Ultra DMA Mode ? or PIO? well there's my 2 cents.

i've just installed mother-board-monitor 5 on my computer and found that my cpu temp is sitting on 59-64^C when at 100% processor usage! i'm pretty sure this isn't normal, is it safe? i've got a PIII 800 with the standard heat-sync and fan, not overclocked. anybody else heard of this? or could it be a faulty sensor? oh, and how do u do that little degrees symbol.

my friend had a problem similar to this last night. He has recently built a new computer. The nic worked for a while then it just screwed up and stoped working. After deleteing it from device manager it wouldn't install the right drivers as it did the first time. with a lot of mucking around we couldn't get it to work so we changed it to a different pci slot. turned it back on and it worked like a dream. pretty screwed up, no idea why it did it, but it can't hurt giving it a go hey? does any body know what cards you are meant to put in what slots? I have heard that there are specific places u r meant to put specific cards

when i run counterstrike in Direct3d, i can't see the bomb sites. stick with openGL!!!

yea, that whole spanned volumes thing is a pretty funky little bonus, but speed-wise is it really worth it? I mean, as is usual i am probably wrong but i have heard that they perform a bit slower as a dynamic disk.

nope, i just used the tape that came with it. Maby i should get some real stuff and try that. I'll take a look at their site now. thanks dude...

u can also get a little program called NTFSDOS.EXE that u can run from a 9x boot disk to let u access it and read, ?write? like a normal fat32 drive. but yea, ntfs whoops arse. its a bit of effort to get used to with security permissions etc, but its got heaps of funky features like compression and stuff built in...

Dynamic disks should ONLY be used when actually using the windows RAID solutions like striping, spanning, etc, like patrickd said. a friend of mine had one of his disks set up as dynamic for ages, he formatted and went back to basic and got a big performance increase. As far as i know, u shouldn't be using then unless you are using the raid features. There's just no point...

ummm, i was under the impression that there were NO voodoo drivers for XP. A friend of mine had to replacee his voodoo3(not a bad card) when he upgraded coz of this. just done some looking around though, there seem to be a couple of different XP drivers here... guess i was wrong... http://www.voodoofiles.com/type.asp?cat_id=1

XP has been screwing up for me so i decided to reisnstall. I removed the c: partition and let windows re-format it on re-install. now that i've finaly reinstalled it's screwed up all my drive letters. i've got 2 cdroms and two hard disks, one of which has 2 partitions, one for windows (5G) and a bigger one... its made the windows partition that was c: before, g:!!! i can change all of the other drives in disk-management but it says i can't change the drive letter that windows is installed on. Anybody got any ideas how to fix this??? THanx in adv. guys....

the only thing i can think is to make sure you'r permissions are all set properly. Right click on the directory and go to properties. then go to the Security tab and make sure that "Everyone" has full control. Then go to advanced and tick "Replace permissions entries on all child objects...." and make sure it has "allow everyone full control" then click apply. See if that fixes it. if it doesn't go back into the "advanced" bit and go to the Owner tab. then tick the "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects" "Change Owner To" your username and click apply. i had a problem similar to that a while ago, i did that and it fixed it. I hope that sorts it out for ya...
