    Upgrading plan !

I've had my P3V4X for 2 years and 3 months, since the day it was available. I have never had trouble of any kind with it in Win98, Win2K, WinXP, Win2K Advanced Server, Linux, and even Basilisk (Mac emu) I even use Rivatuner to force AGP 4x and Fast Writes with my Hercules GF3500. Soundblaster runs fine too, and 1gb memory is fully operable. Maybe this is because I took the 90 seconds required to install the 4in1 drivers? Seriously, I believe VIA has had trouble supporting AMD platforms more that Intel. Anyone else care to add their experiences? Here's my specs, running smooth as silk: OS: Mostly Windows XP Mobo: Asus P3V4X CPU: P3 1GHZ w/ Asus slotket adapter Memory: 1GB PC133 CAS 2 Mushkin HDD: 30GB ATA66 WD, 80GB ATA100 WD - Both 7200 rpm CDROM: Kenwood 72x (barely working - these suck!) CDRW: Yamaha 16x10x40 Floppy: NEC Video: Hercules GeForce 3 Ti500 Sound: Soundblaster Live! 5.1 Ethernet: 3COM SOHO-TX100, D-Link DFE 530TX SCSI: Adaptec AIC-7850 (for scanner) Scanner: Epson 1640SU Printer: Epson 980 Monitor: Viewsonic PF790 Speakers: Cambridge Soundworks DTT2500 Keyboard: IBM Standard El Cheapo Mouse: MS Intellimouse Explorer Case: 3DCool.com PSU: 300W came with case

    Upgrading plan !

You could get a powerleap slotket and put that 1.26ghz tualatin into your p3v4x. ATA100 will give you minimal performance boost over ATA66. http://www.powerleap.com/Products/iP3T.htm

    buying RAM for asus A7V333

Is this the article you saw? There are 3 results posted there, one result shows cas 2.5 ddr333 slightly faster, one shows cas 2 ddr266 slightly faster, and one has them virtually the same. If you are looking to replace your cas 2 ddr266 with cas 2.5 ddr333, then I would save my money and wait another month or 2 until the cas 2 modules start showing up. If you need new memory now for a new system, then go for it. Personally, I only use cas 2 memory, at the fastest clock speed my mobo will support. If you buy cas 2.5 now, you may find yourself tempted to replace it with cas 2 in a few months. It just depends on if you need it now, or if you can wait a bit more.

    buying RAM for asus A7V333

Due to latency, cas 2 ddr266 runs faster than cas 2.5 ddr333.

    buying RAM for asus A7V333

I don't think any cas 2 ddr333 is available yet. You're better off with cas 2 ddr266 for now. If anyone knows of a reliable source of cas 2 ddr333, hopefully they will mention it here.

NT Server 4.0, Enterprise BSOD help

I think errors like that arise when you have driver problems. Have you installed any new hardware or upgraded any drivers lately? Think about the past month or so, what could have changed?

    User accounts

The only reason to not use the admin account is for security. For best security, use a regular users account, and use the Run As option when you need admin rights for a program.

    Network/workgroup logon??

If both computers are in the same workgroup, and you have set up identical user accounts with the same passwords in each, then you will not get a password box, it will connect seamlessly. If you want the password box to come up, then make sure that computer B (same as in your 1st post) does not have a user account matching the one you use when logging on to computer A. The password box will pop up when you try to access resources on computer A, and you have to use a valid username and password that exists on computer B. If this isn't clear, I can explain it at an easier level.

Only possible if you use this: http://www.powerleap.com/Products/iP3T.htm Other slotkets won't do it.

    L2 Cache size ???

Well, that clears up that bad misconception!

    L2 Cache size ???

In XP it is set at the default of 256 (the setting of 0) regardless of your cpu. In other words, it does not detect your L2 cache, so you have to set it manually. If you have 512 you should set it to 200.

    Morpheus Question

Kazaa turns your pc into an ad-server, using your hardware to serve ads to others, making money for Sharman Networks. Get Kazaa-Lite or something else. Always run Ad-Aware after installing one of these evil packages of doom.

Plextor 40x12x40A always under PIO Mode?!

Try moving it to the primary channel as slave. If it works there, try moving it back again as secondary master. XP will do it's mysterious little hardware install each time it sees the new drive.

    Network/workgroup logon??

In XP, if you are not in a Domain, incoming connections are forced to use the Guest account by default. To change this behavior to the Win2k way of having the same account on each computer: type secpol.msc in the Run box. In the left pane, select "Local Policies"-->"Security Options." In the right pane, find "Network access: Sharing and Security Model for Local Accounts." Double click on it. Change it to Classic. p.s. I think this should be added to the faq for XP, this question comes up almost once a week.

Plextor 40x12x40A always under PIO Mode?!

One of my CD ROMs mysteriously fell back to PIO mode a couple of weeks ago. I had trouble getting it back to DMA, but I think what did it was that I set it to DMA, rebooted, set it to PIO, rebooted, set it to DMA again, rebooted, and then it finally stayed. I'm not sure if this is exactly what I did, but you get the idea.

    Service Pack 3?

That's just gossip and speculation coming out of the MS court case going on. We will have to wait until that is over to see what happens to Windows.

    Propellerhead Reason in Win 2k

Have you tried running it in Win98 compatibility mode? This works sometimes, so it's worth a try. Right click on the program, or a shortcut to it, then select properties, then select the Compatibility tab. The rest is obvious.

    msconfig

You can just copy msconfig.exe from a Win98 or WinXP computer to your Win2K install. I never had problems when doing this. You are probably most interested in managing what programs startup, so you should find this useful: http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

DHCP server, How do you do ?

XP Pro is a CLIENT operating system. DHCP Server is part of a SERVER operating system. If you need to run DHCP, you need to install Windows 2000 Server, then use Add/Remove programs, look in Windows components, and install DHCP server. The DHCP server must then be authorized in Active Directory on the Domain Controller. Then you need to configure a scope of ip addresses to assign to DHCP clients. What exactly do you want to do with DHCP? You said you don't know any networking, so I am wondering what it is you actually need.

How do I reinstall DX in XP

Don't hit R to repair, that just brings you to the recovery console. Initially you need to hit Enter to install, pick a partition, then it will notice you have windows on that partition already and it will ask if you want to repair it. Oh, and make sure you DON'T format the partition!

    'Basic' Services in XP

This is a list of the services I have disabled or set to manual in XP pro at home. Keep a list like this of the ones you modify so you can easily change them back if you run into trouble. If you are unsure about a service, change it from automatic to manual, then check later to see if it started or is trying to start. ***DISABLE*** _________________________________ Automatic Updates Remote Registry Remote Desktop Help Session Manager SSDP Discovery Service TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Universal Plug and Play Device Host ***MANUAL*** _________________________________ Help & Support Messenger Portable Media Serial Number System Restore Service Task Scheduler Wireless Zero Configuration
