  1. You can uninstall it completely from your system without using system restore. Here are 2 ways: 1. Go to C:\Windows\inf and find the file sysoc.inf. 2. Open the file with notepad. 3. Remove the word ",hide" wherever it occurs, and save the changes. 4. Go to Control Panel, Add/Remove programs, Windows components. 5. Uninstall Messenger! This method may not work all the time though. Here is another, possibly simpler method. 1. Download XPAntispy from here. 2. Unizip it. 3. Run it, and select the option to completely remove Messnger.

    A poll of sorts

764mb on 2nd disk, 64 mb on system disk.
  3. Of course I know I can turn it off or uninstall it! I dl the update to find out if it would reinstall it, not out of dumb blindness. I was expecting something funny to happen. Read my first post again, slowly this time. Especially the last part about not paying attention.

    This doesn't make sense

I heard that the 1st pci slot has some priority, so I put NICs in this one.

    Windows Update not working

Since XP came out, the windows update has been acting funny sometimes. Just try again later.
  6. I understand that a lot of games run smoother when you log on as a power user, because you have a lot less services and stuff running in the background, but what good would it be to run the game as a power user when you are logged on as admin? Those services are still running. Am I missing something?

How to create a "hidden" user ?

You can use TweakUI to enable autologon. Also with TweakUI, you can specify which users appear on the welcome screen. TweakUI is part of the WinXP Powertoys package. It is not available on MS website for now, they are working on a new version, which will be available in April. But you can download the previous version here.

    Roxio sucks so bad!

What the hell is going on with them? I had installed ECC 8 months ago after I installed WinXP, ran the update to 5.01d, and the xp patch and it all worked fine on the first try back then. I just got the 5.1 update and it totally faqd everything up. So I uninstall, clean out every trace from the registry, hdd, etc., and I can't get back to how I was before 5.1. Any ideas? I use nero, clone CD and others for most things, but ECC had the best gui, and was just easier to use if I had to burn a cd real quick, so I can do without it. I'm just puzzled as to why it's such a pain to get it to work.
  10. In WinXP clients are forced to use the Guest account to logon when you are in a workgroup. If you disable the Guest account as Xiven said (I also recommend you do this) you need to turn off the forceguest feature like this: 1. Go to Start --> Run 2. Enter secpol.msc 3. Go to Local Policies -> Security Options 4. Double-click on "Network Access: Sharing and security model for local accounts" 5. Change the setting to "Classic"

Need a good (FREE) registry cleaner for Win 2K

Ashampoo Winoptimizer is the only one I like. Others have caused problems in my registry. Never had a problem with winoptimizer, in either Win98, Win2K, or WinXP. It's not "free" by default, but the price is great at only $20, and well worth it. I've used it for 3 years! You can read about it Here.

    Roxio sucks so bad!

Good advice, I was able to find 2 more driver files and their corresponding registry entries, but no more than that, after much scouring. Roxio still won't work, but I'm better off now that I'm no longer attached to their warm fuzzy gui. Nero is so much better!

    Roxio sucks so bad!

I was more ranting that seeking help, but since it may be possible to get help, here goes: Previously had 5.01d running in WinXP, never a problem. This was a clean install of WinXP. Two days ago, I got the 5.1 patch, because it claimed to fix some gui bugs among other things. After patching, ECC would no longer start up. An error would pop up saying "could not initiate cd engine" or something along those lines. So, I uninstalled completely, and reinstalled back to 5.01d, and still got the error. Then repeated, this time wiping any ECC registry entries, etc., still to no avail. I am completely unable to use it now, with or without that new "patch." However, it isn't too big of a deal because I can use Nero, CloneCD, and some other apps to do the same plus more. I only liked ECC for its easy gui. I probably won't try anything else, unless someone comes up with a very good, convincing fix, because I already wasted a lot of time on this issue. It's just not worth the fight to get crappy software to work.

    Norton Personal Firewall

I had the same problem, here's how I fixed it: The default system wide rules in Norton Personal Firewall for Inbound Bootp seem to be wrong. The default connections specify local port 68 and remote port 67. If you use local 67 and remote 68, the client is able to connect to DHCP properly.

    Scheduled tasks question

Put something like this in a batch file, then schedule the batch file to run: cd G:\My Music\Rage Against The Machine start WakeUp.mp3 exit You can use a single mp3 or use a playlist file (asx).

    28.32 & refresh rate

I tried playing with the registry, and none of the possible entries I found worked. Same thing with the inf file and all the apps out there--no luck. So I'm back at 23.11 until Nvidia gets their act together.

    PowerUsers Under XP

Right click on the file you want to run and then click "Run As". This will allow you to pick another user account for running the program, thus applying that accounts rights to it.

    Kenwood 72X CDROM (XP Drivers)

Where did you find a Kenwood drive? Those were discontinued last summer, because they break in about 1 year. Or they have lots of trouble reading burned or copy protected cd's. I've gone through 3 of them. The first one was great, one of the lucky ones that didn't break, and read any disk, very quickly. Unfortunately, my apartment burned down a year later. So I put a new one in my new computer, and that one gave me nothing but trouble. Then I got a warranty replacement, and although it works better, it still reads burned cd's terribly slow. Anyway, here's a link to their drivers/firmware page: http://www.kenwoodtech.com/downloads.html
