    Win2k Pro SP2 Startup Sleep

I had a similar problem once. I had to update network card drivers and make sure one of them (I had 2) was given a static ip.
  2. Music Match can do that while creating MP3's. I don't know about splitting MP3's you already have. I use Cool Edit for sound editing usually, and it's easy to cut and paste stuff in there. But it's expensive.

    Page File gone BAD!!! Help!!!

I think the recovery console won't let you see the pagefile.sys. He may have to put the drive into another NT machine and delete the file while in the other OS.

    Wierd grey screen problem

It's happened to me only twice in 6 months, and while not connected to the Internet. And I run a VERY clean system here. Try using some of the computers you build sometime, and you'll understand Windows better.

    3Com 3CSOHO100-TX NIC and WIN2000 Server

Go to this website and try the drivers there. The 3com drivers don't work too well sometimes, and these may be a lot better for you. http://www.kevtv.com/computerstuff.htm

    Wierd grey screen problem

I recall having a fullscreen grey screen come up once or twice on my XP box, and I couldn't figure out how to recreate it. Maybe it's related to active desktop? If you have a jpg as your desktop wallpaper, try changing it to a bmp. Just a thought...

boot disk from NT w/s to access Server

Put the server HD as slave into the computer with the image and restore the image. If this is unfeasable, get dos drivers for the servers nic, and use the ghost network boot disk utility to make a boot disk.

    Password recovery on Win2k Server?

You can use Winternals Locksmith. It will allow you to change the password for any account on any drive you are not currently running your os from. A 6 year old could use it! I just tested it on my Win2K Advanced Server, with great success. Check your private messages and email me at that address!

    New hard disk... suggestions?

My preference is Western Digital. Second to that is Maxtor for me. These are the only 2 top brands I have never had a problem with.

    Password recovery on Win2k Server?

The sam file in the Repair folder is from the first boot I beleive, so if you copy this one over the current sam in use, account passwords created since then will be lost. And you can't recreate the exact same accounts again b/c the SID will be different. It might be better to search the net for a password recovery tool. I know there's lots of them around, most of which you have to pay for. No matter what you do, make a backup copy of your sam file first!

    Password recovery on Win2k Server?

If Windows 2000 is installed on a FAT or FAT32 file system: Start the computer using an MS-DOS or a Microsoft Windows 95/98 startup disk. Copy the original SAM saved during the initial Windows 2000 installation in the %SystemRoot%\Repair folder to the %SystemRoot%\System32\Config folder. If Windows 2000 is installed on an NTFS file system: Either move the drive to another Windows 2000-based computer or perform an additional installation of Windows 2000 (parallel install) to gain access to the NTFS partition. Copy the SAM in the %SystemRoot%\Repair folder to the %SystemRoot%\System32\Config folder. NOTE : This method is useful only if you remember the original Administrator password you used during the initial installation of Windows 2000.

Lost my CD-ROM drives in My Computer!

I use Nero mostly, but I never use packet writing. I just don't have a need to. Here's some software that has packet writing. I haven't tried it, so I don't know how good or bad it is. I suggest you get the free trial version and see what works for you. This one says it uses the native Win2k/XP drivers, avoiding crashes. NTI CD-Maker 2000 Pro

Maybe you had allcaps on when you changed it.

Lost my CD-ROM drives in My Computer!

There are two solutions I think may work. 1. Download and install the ASPI drivers found here. 2. Download and install Clone CD found here. Clone CD has a utility that checks the registry to make sure CD drive related entries are correct. It does this when you boot up your computer. It will fix your problem, which was caused by Roxio. I had the same exact problem before, and this is what fixed it. Let me know if this helps at all!

    Best browser enhancements ?

Opera has banner ads. I get enough of that crap anyway. Sure you can pay for the ad-free version, but IE and NS are both free. Screw Opera.

    1. Right click the file/folder in question. 2. Select Properties. 3. Click the Security tab.* 4. Click the Advanced button. 5. Click the Owner tab. 6. Select the user name you want to be the owner (you). 7. Check the box that says "Replace Owner on subcontainers..." 8. Click OK. *Note: If you don't see the security tab in step 3 (WinXP), do the following: 1. Open any Windows Explorer window. 2. Click Tools, select Folder Options. 3. Click the View tab. 4. Scroll to the bottom of the Advanced Settings box and de-select "Use Simple File Sharing." 5. Click OK.

EXTREME problem on new machine - repeated lockups

Sounds like a hardware problem, possibly ESD troubles. Try a different memory stick, or underclock it. Then maybe a diff cpu, and so on.

Looking for a bulk faxing program...

I used the Win98 fax proggie a couple of years ago to send out 200+ resumes all at once. It took a while though.

    What's better NAV or McAffee?

As a NAV user who has never tried anything else, I can attest that NAV is the best! jk, actually, I like NAV but the only problem I have with it is that since version 2002 it won't install without IE 5 or higher.

    Network Sharing A Scanner?????

You should recognize MS TechNet when you see it, deeman. All i did was copy-paste. And Clutch is right of course, I didn't think of the network scanner/printers. Those things are pretty nice!

    Run box problem.

Does this happen when typing elsewhere, or only in the Run box?

    PowerUsers Under XP

Oh, I see then. Click Start, type secpol.msc in your Run box and click ok. You will now be viewing your security settings. You can add groups to any of the rights shown. I recommend you create a new group, make your account a member of that new group, and add the rights you want to that new group. (Run gpedit.msc to do that.) You could just add rights to the Power Users group, but then you lose track of the default Power User rights.
  25. Today (March 28) 2 new critical updates were released to the windows update page. Take care to read them carefully. The second one is this: Quote: Windows Messenger 4.6 Connectivity Update Download size: 975 KB, < 1 minute This update resolves several security and service reliability issues in Windows Messenger 4.6, and is discussed in Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) Article Q320259. Download now to improve connectivity and system performance. Microsoft strongly recommends that you download this update, even if you do not use Windows Messenger. Read more... I have WinXP, and I uninstalled that annoying Windows Messenger a long time ago. I didn't like the way it calls MS every 10 seconds. I downloaded the update out of curiosity, because the last sentence in the above description sounds a bit strange to me. So what happened? Messenger was completely reinstalled, and I had to uninstall it again! The point of this is to make everyone aware, because a lot of people just dl the critical updates without paying much attention. If you have removed Messenger and don't want it to return, skip this update! It's just a lame pathetic attempt for Bill to bring home some of his lost sheep.
