    Just saw Episode 2

I stopped reading the books about 3 years ago. Too many were coming out by then and I couldn't keep up, and the quality was slipping. They went the same way as Star Trek books did; mass quantity over quality in the end. I loved the Jedi Academy books though, but the best of all was Timothy Zahn's trilogy, with Grand Admiral Thrawn.

    help. can't share internet connection

Ok, on the same tab where you enable ICS, check to make sure the WinXP firewall is NOT enabled. Do this on all the NICs on both computers.
  3. You could go to http://www.divx.com and download the free divx player and codec (one package). It's nifty. If you get the one with adware (Gain Trickler) in it, it is easily removed with AdAware , leaving divx working fine and ad-free. There is also another free version, with no ads, but it lacks some encoding abilities, which you probably won't use anyway.

Read through this thread. Lots of good info after the first few posts there so you can make an informed decision.

    help. can't share internet connection

Here's some vague tips for a vague problem: Make sure the client pc is set to automatically obtain an ip address and dns server address. Make sure both pc's are in the same workgroup (sounds like they are already, since file sharing is working). Can the client connect to the internet without going through the host? Double check the IE connection settings. You should be connecting through lan. There should be no dial up or VPN connections configured on the connections tab. Are you running any firewalls? If so make sure you allow the client through the firewall properly.

Any network cards in there? Try disabling any NICs in device manager and rebooting to see if it boots quickly.

    Just saw Episode 2

Hey Joebrez, it was Emperor Palpatine in Dark Empire, he supposedly died several times, and just occupied a new body of one of his clones from his secret personal stash. hehe. Luke had to destroy the clone chambers to dispatch him forever and for good.

    Just saw Episode 2

I finally saw the movie yesterday and I just have to say . . . WOW! AMAZING! This was true Star Wars to the core. I loved every minute of the movie! I don't understand how anyone can be critical of any part of this movie, it was incredible from beginning to end. Lucas finally got back into developing his characters. So many mysteries are being revealed, and they all lead to new questions. WARNING SPOILER BITS BELOW!! I love the way that Palpatine has been manipulating everyone for at least 10 years (episode I). He is so smooth, playing out the other jedi and the whole republic in order to gain power. And Yoda! OMG what can you say! Now we have finally seen how powerful he can be. I loved it! I'm glad they toned down Jar Jar. He's finally gotten control of himself. I hated him in Ep I. Obi Wan was perfect. He was my favorite character overall. And I got chills when Anakin was telling Padme about what he did in the Tusken Raider village. He's definitely losing it. I thought the whole clone thing was great. Palpatine will eventually use this army to maintain control of the Republic. I laughed to myself when he promised the senate that he would return the emergency powers they gave him after the crisis has passed. HA! We know how long THAT will take! Not until Vader kills him. And does anyone else agree that Owen and Beru were perfect? They looked exactly like them! And I remember from some of the comic books or novels or something that it was mentiond that Boba Fett was somehow related to the Stormtroopers. Now we know how! What I expect in Episode 3: Palpatine gains more and more control, and is finally revealed to be a Sith. Anakin, desperate to become all powerful, in the name of revenge, dabbles in the Dark Side of the Force. Darth Sidious plays Anakin against Dooku, just like he will eventually play Luke against Vader. But this time Anakin easily gives in to hate and defeats Dooku, becoming Darth Vader. The twins are born in secret. Anakin blames the Jedi for something (death of Padme?) and hunts them all down, using the huge clone army and serving Sidious. Being an unstable control freak, he gladly sets about bringing order to the galaxy through fear and violence. Construction of the Death Star begins. Luke is left with Owen and Beru on Tatooine, Leia is left on Alderaan. Obi Wan hides on Tatooine, Yoda hides on Dagoba. Everyone is waiting for Luke to grow up, he is the Jedi's only hope. Hopefully some Wookies!

    W2K or XP?

You will definitely like XP's Clear Type font on an LCD. XP is more user friendly overall, with many of the advanced features of W2K hidden from normal users. XP boots much faster, and has better multimedia support. And if you don't like the new GUI effects, you can selectively turn them off.

    buying RAM for asus A7V333

Check this out. It looks like Mushkin Hi Perf LEVEL 2 2100 222 (DDR266) can easily be overclocked way past 333mhz while running at cas 2. I've used their memory before, and can vouch for it's stability. But I have not tried their DDR modules yet.

    Lan-connecting winXP and winNT 4.0?

Use ip's of 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2. Also use a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 for both. And make sure you are using a crossover cable if the computers are connected directly to each other.

I see what you're saying now. It can be more risky if you enter your admin credentials over and over using runas, b/c of prying eyes nearby and such. Thanks for the tip!
  15. XP is more compatable with gaming imho.

    Restricting Internet Access With ADSL

If restricting access to certain web pages is what you need you could get a software proxy server like Winproxy. It allows you to filter content and you can cache web pages for speedier access. Also has some basic virus protection. A bit of a learning curve if you are new to it, but it's pretty good. If you want a LAN, but do not want the other users to connect to the internet, assign static IP's to the workstations manually. Remember to omit the default gateway so they can't get to the internet.

None of you should assume I'm on any particular "side" of this issue. I merely stated the reasoning behind using the runas option because Videobruce asked for the reasoning behind it. I don't use it very much myself actually! It's clumsy and annoying. And if you are concientious enough you will take other, better precautions in the first place. It's great to have the latest virus definitions and hotfixes, but that does not mean you should feel safe and comfy. It's the unknown viruses and security holes that are the big problem. I don't remember the last time an antivirus definition came out for a virus before it was already in the wild. The best defence is the education of your users, however daunting that may be. If you want to go by the book and only use the runas option, then you should use a regular user account, not power user. Power users still have enough permissions for many exploits, such as the right to install other programs. I hope I don't sound like a newbie student. I wish I had 7 years experience in this field. Instead I spent 7 years as a chemist and hated every minute of it. Gradually, I turned to IT and began running the p.o.s. NT4 network at that plant, before quitting my job for some formal education. I should get my MCSE in about 3 more months and begin logging proper experience finally. You guys in this forum are a continual inspiration, and the issues discussed here are very informative and helpful as well.

It depends on the apps you need to run. If using the runas option does not cause any problems, then this would be the more secure option. The reasoning is that if you pick up something malicious like a trojan or a bad script in an email, or just poorly written software, it won't be able to execute with administrative rights, limiting the potential damage it can do.

Access to registry files from DOS?

The registry files are binary, so ascii text editors won't work. There are some 3rd party utilities out there, but you will have to search for them. These pretty much do what regedit does. Regedit will work in dos. Try this one. It is version 4, from Windows 95. When you make your .reg file in notepad, make sure the first line is REGEDIT4 and also make sure there is an extra blank line at the end of all the data. Also, this version is limited to a .reg file size of 64k. When in dos, type regedit /? to get options.

    VGASave mode deactivated

Try booting with "Last Known Good Configuration." If that doesn't work, try using your XP CD to boot to the recovery console and copying the driver back to where it belongs. If that doesn't work, If the drive is formatted FAT32, boot a Win98 Startup disk, or dos floppy, and copy the driver from another computer. If the drive is formatted NTFS, stick the drive in another computer as a slave drive and copy the driver that way. Or try doing a full repair installation.

Access to registry files from DOS?

Not sure if this will work in Win2K, but you can try. Make a .reg file of the changes you need to make to the registry, and save it to your winnt folder. Then in dos import it like this: C:\winnt\regedit C:\winnt\filename.reg.
