Installing Window NT on 250 GB Maxtor Sata HDD
zen69x replied to sarvaiya_mitesh@yahoo.com's topic in Everything New Technology
You need to find the driver disk for the manufacturer of the IDE controller. If it's built onto the motherboard which is my guess, and because it's a Dell, it'll likely be Intel's website you'll need to search. Find out what model of the motherboard. -
Cloning SID and domain membership + security
zen69x replied to gsa's topic in Everything New Technology
Why would you want to do this? Just make 2 computer accounts in the domain. Also, the machine account's password is changed periodically so eventually, even if you get this working it will break when the password is changed from one OS and then you boot up in the other OS. You can disable this password changing, but that nullifies some of the security of having the PC in the domain in the first place. -
I've got this very same scanner running under Windows Server 2003. Go here: http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/suppo...latform=Windows and grab the latest, 5.71a TWAIN driver. Also, I'm not entirely sure as I have it running, but you may need the Windows Image Aquisition service to be running for it to work as well.

Windows NT Workstation in a 2003 Domain
zen69x replied to owDAWG's topic in Everything New Technology
The 2003 server will act as a PDCe. I believe that you will need to ensure that the NT4 workstations are at SP6a though. (Actually above SP3 due to some security settings on 2003.) Windows 2003 interim mode would seem to be what he is after, if he has any plans on leaving any NT 4 BDC's connected. Also, this MSKB article suggests that he can copy the poledit.exe from the NT server to the 2k3 server and continue to use the policies he sets up through that. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;814598 -
Open the DHCP management console and right click the server. Go to the DNS tab and one of the options says "Dynamically update DNS A and PTR records for DHCP clients that do not request updates (for example, clients running Windows NT 4.0)" I'm not sure if you'll need to restart the DHCP service for this to take effect or not however but I'd likely advise you do for good measure. That's one possibility. Please tell us: What OS the clients are using? Are they joined to the Win2k3 domain? Are the clients primary DNS server set to the IP address of your Win2k3 server? Oh, and lastly, are the DHCP and DNS services both (either) hosted on the Win2k3 server or elsewhere?

Synchronise NT Workstations time to NT Server 4.0 on start up
zen69x replied to melissasue's topic in Software
You'll need the NT 4 Resource kit for that. Lookup Time Synchronizing Service (Y2K) (Timeserv.exe ) There's a bunch of other tools included in the resource kit,. Tools in the NT 4 Resource Kit MSKB article regarding timeserv.exe Alternately, this is native in Win2k and above. -
Quote: I switched the computer to standard pc in device manager - but - the manual settings for IRQ still aren't enabled (Do I have to do a clean install to force a Hal change? Under Win2k and XP there should be absolutely no reason to assign IRQ's manually. The only one would be a badly written driver or badly designed hardware. Please give us a bit more detail as to what exactly is going wrong. I looked through your link, but when they're all enabled, what occurs? Does the drive get a letter assigned to it? Does it show up in disk management? How old is this laptop, CPU type?

Quote: However, I do say that it is much easier to install a floppy drive or get a USB floppy drive and adjust your BIOS settings then to create one of these disks Yeah... definately easier to just get the floppy. But where's the fun in that? Seriously though. I think I got tired of misplacing the floppy with the drivers and finding another disk that worked ::mutters something about floppy disk's lack of quality nowadays::

I sent you a PM on this. I will need to see copies of the DOSNET.INF and TXTSETUP.SIF files and preferably a link to the drivers you are using. My e-mail is my username @hotmail.

Posted by jmmijo: Quote: No, there isn't any way of doing this, you need to get a floppy drive Can too. Custom install CD with extra drivers? Near the bottom. It is however, more of a template to follow than a step-by-step guide though.

Posted by Expro: Quote: All aplications based on 16 bit dont work in SP 2 Care to back that up? How many PC's have you tested? I have an entire department at work that uses a 16bit app daily and it's running just fine on XP SP2. Darkslash, Have you verified that the firewall is disabled? Also, when you say messaging services, what exactly are you speaking about? IM clients, IRC clients, something else?

What is the power rating on the power supply? A cold boot, full shutdown and then power up, will place a greater load on the power supply then a warm boot, or reboot. My suggestion would be to get something greater than 350watts if you don't already have that. If you do, see if you can get another to test with as perhaps it is going bad?

First, I will suggest that you title the thread better and you'll be more likely to receive help. To find out what kind of graphics adapter and DirectX version you have, click start then run. In the open box, type dxdiag and press enter. On the bottom of the first page there you will see your DirectX version. On the display tab, the device shown on top left will be your graphics adapter type. As for up[censored] DirectX, latest released version is 9.0c, go here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx Ensure that DirectX is up to date, and get the latest drivers for your video card as well. If you're still having issues, let us know what card you have and likely someone will have some other suggestion for you at that time.

First, I would suggest that you title the thread as you might get a bit more help. You may try this: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q314451 Also, ensure you have the latest BIOS release for your board. Then and my guess from the looks of it, the board has ATA controller, SATA controller, and onboard RAID as well? What connection and in what configuration do you have the hard drives installed? That is likley my guess as to why you are having issues. You will need to get the proper 64bit drivers for the mode you are using and press F6 during setup ,you will need a floppy (or create a custom install CD) to supply the drivers to the OS, I have heard that a USB floppy will work too, but I can't confirm.

Quote: I know it had a f**** firewall. So i uninstalled it Err... uninstalled what? The firewall or the service pack? If you uninstalled the service pack, likely the firewall will still remain enabled. BTW, the firewall only blocks inbound connections and if that is the issue, it normally prompts you to continue blocking or unblock inbound connections to that app. Perhaps you do not see this due to games being fullscreen? Why not research the ports that the game requires and simply add them to be allowed.

You're not the first, nor the last by a longshot, to ask that question. Next time it comes up, I expect you'll answer it.

DOES ANY ONE KNOW HOW TO INSTALL WINDOWS XP ON A 32 MB OF RAM SYSTEM?
zen69x replied to MATTdoria's topic in Everything New Technology
You can in fact install Win2000 on 32MB of memory as that is the lowest supported configuration for that OS. Apparently MS finally decided to up it to 64MB. But I have the Gold release and it specs out 32MB as the minimum. http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/professional/evaluation/sysreqs/default.asp Having said that the lowest I've really run it in was 96MB. I would highly suggest 128MB as a minimum and 192 - 256 as starting to get comfortable. With XP, the minimum required is 64MB and after reading the above, I'd think you slightly mad to try to run XP in anything less than 128MB. -
Quote: I do not run my TS boxes in Application Mode, so I don't bother with the Terminal Services Configuration console. However, I don't believe that drive redirection is fielded there. In the user's Environment tab in AD Users and Computers, you will see a setting for redirecting local drives. This only pertains to the Citrix client, and not to the RDP client: Thanks for the link. I wasn't aware of that. In the Terminal Services configuration utility, on the client settings tab, there is an option to disable various items and drive mapping is one of them. I would totally agree that group policy would be a better way to configure this however.
-
This is a 2003 TS and not a 2000 one correct? I would check group policy, Terminal Service configuration mmc console, or even the user accounts themselves to see if they are denied there.

Posted by Alec§taar Quote: P.S.=> Curious also - CAN YOU USE LMHOSTS WITH "Active Directory" still for name resolutions? Thanks for Info... apk LMHOSTS is more of a replacement for WINS and also has the ability to identify various attibutes. AD is dependent on DNS and most importantly the service records contained there. The HOSTS file would seem to be more directly related, however I don't know if there is any capability to point somehow to a service record via the HOSTS file. To be honest, I've never tried to use anything other than DNS for AD. As for straight name resolution, I'd be more apt myself to use the HOSTS file as I've not messed with a LMHOSTS file in many years.

Have you looked into using a stub zone? The definition given in help would not indicate that you can use it for this but giving it a try on my lab it seems that it would. Create a stub zone for "Far Larger Company.com" and then do a transfer from master. This should import all the name servers and I believe any A records for PC's that identify themselves as servers. Essentially, you'll still point to your local DNS server and it will now have a list of name servers for "Far Larger Company.com" zone. Let me know how this works out for you as I'm a bit curious. Never really had to implement a stub zone before.

w2k boot cd with Third Party SCSI & MassStorage Drivers
zen69x replied to tarkan's topic in Everything New Technology
Read this thread: http://www.ntcompatible.com/thread.php?id=25442 The method described there is different from what you're trying to do, however it does allow you to still use the custom CD on any PC as it still attempts to detect the hardware and is not trying to automatically install a certain set of drivers as the method you're attempting to use does. -
Hey! Is the "CHOICE" batchfile command available in 2000/XP/2003?
zen69x posted a topic in Everything New Technology
It was removed in Win2k, XP does not have it either. It was put back in Windows Server 2003 though. I'm not sure what the reasoning was behind that... there is an MSKB article or info in the system help that describes an alternate way of doing that. -
How to update Win2k's 'repair' folder?
zen69x replied to Curley_Boy's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Quote: also what is the difference between those files stored in 'repair\Regback' and those in the root of 'repair'? The files in the repair directory is basically a copy of your registry on a fresh installation, these do not get updated to my knowledge. The files in the repair\regback directory are the files that are updated when you try to make an ERD. Quote: However when try and make an ERD I get the following error: The operation failed. The disk file was not found or was inaccessible. I know it isn't a defective floppy so I seem to have hit a dead end with this one (unless someone can suggest I solution)? The floppy might not be generated, in fact I can't remember the last time I actually created a floppy when I ran the command for the ERD. The current registry is still backed up and you can verify it by checking the timestamps on the files in the winnt\repair\regback folder. Additionally, if you have the rdisk.exe file from an NT4 install, you can just copy that over and run with it as it works on Win2k as well.
