    XP and linux dual boot...

Quote: I would install XP first, and then Linux, and use either Lilo or Grub as a boot loader. Depending on which distro you choose, it may, or may not, support NTFS. Just check the online documentation first, if you must access an NTFS partition. A friend of mine wants to set up a dualboot machine between Win2k and RedHat, and she asked me to help, though I admittedly only have basic knowledge of Linux (installed it several times at work). I've just spent the last 3 hours looking around RedHat's site to see if it supports NTFS, and I'll be darned if I can find it.

    XP and linux dual boot...

Quote: You can put Linux into the XP boot menu (I've done it) - just follow the instructions here One thing I noticed missing: To make those instructions work, does your Win2k partition have to be FAT32 or can it be NTFS? TIA...

    CDROM spindown

Does anyone know where the setting in the registry is that controls the spindown time for CDROM/CDRW drives? Thanks in advance....
  4. I've got a rig running Win2k Advanced Server, and the version of Backup Exec that we have only supports basic Server, not Advanced. My boss wants to consider reinstalling Server over top of Advanced Server, and the damned Knowledge Base is less than helpful on the topic of preserving shares during an upgrade (or downgrade). Does anyone know if the shares will be preserved during said downgrade? Thanks in advance....

    Which GeForce to buy?

Hi, I hope to gather some opinions and info here. I've finally decided to bite the bullet, ditch my Voodoo 4 4500 and get something made by Nvidia. (Decision hastened by the 3dfx corrupted menus bug in NASCAR 4 and NASCAR 2002. Grrrr...) ;( Unfortunately, I have a limited budget, in and around the $100 range. What would be more desirable between a GeForce 3 Ti200 and a GeForce 4 MX440? They're roughly the same in price now. Both have 64MB of DDR RAM, a 400mhz memory clock, 6.4GB/s memory bandwidth. Any advantages one would have over the other? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
  6. Believe me, I know it's not a good idea. The version of Backup Exec that we have won't work with Advanced Server, only Server and Professional. The Advanced Server version costs more. I only asked because my boss wanted to know, because there are a TON of shares on the machine, and recreating them would be a pain. Since I posted this, he decided to go ahead and pay for the upgraded version of Backup Exec, so the whole point is moot, anyway. ;( Thanks anyway!

    Which GeForce to buy?

Hehe... you're right, it is a bit higher. I just didn't even bother to look at the 4 Series Ti cards, as I thought them WAY out of my price range, like $100 higher. (I should really know better than to assume. ) $140 with free shipping is in striking distance, though, so I'll just take a couple more weeks to get the cash together. It's worth it, for that card. Thanks for the help, everyone.

    Gateway Voodoo3 1000 drivers?

Yes, that's correct, a Voodoo 3 1000. A friend of mine wants to upgrade her Gateway from Win98SE to Win2k, and it came with this tweaked-down Voodoo 3 that 3dfx made for Gateway way back when. Apparently Gateway doesn't offer any NT/2k/XP drivers for it, so I was wondering if anyone knows if there are any reasons why the Voodoo 3 2000/3000 drivers wouldn't work ok on it? Thanks!

    VIA chipset issues?

I've read people express various opinions on VIA chipset motherboards, including the well-known issue of conflicts between the chipset and Soundblaster cards (I was under the impression that the latest VIA 4-in-1 drivers fixed this. Is that correct?). I was wondering if there were any other known issues that I should be aware of, especially with the Asus A7V333R motherboard, and other KT333 boards?

    Windows 2000 - SP3 Feedback -Post here

Well, I actually had good results from installing SP3. Lately I've been getting BSODs on boot, PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON-PAGED_AREA, which the Knowledge Base said was either faulty hardware installed, a bad driver, or a corrupted NTFS volume. Since I hadn't installed any new hardware or drivers in awhile, I figured it was the NTFS Volume, especially since I could boot ok if I went into Safe Mode and ran a CHKDSK /f /r like the KB said to for a corrupted volume. So, I spend the day backing everything up before I wipe my C drive and reinstall Win2k, and I figure before I do it, let me see how my machine will respond to SP3. So I install SP3, and the BSODs *GO AWAY*. No more BSODs on bootup. Oh well. At least I have a recent backup of all my stuff now.

New SB Live! drivers and DRM

I downloaded the new Live! drivers for Win2k/XP last night (saw the link on Blues). For the heck of it, I decided to look through the EULA for sneaky stuff. I normally look through EULAs that come with apps for that, but since Microsoft stuck that Digital Rights Management crap in the Media Player patch, I've become more suspicious. You wouldn't think there would be anything in device drivers, right? Wrong. Down at the bottom of the EULA, the new drivers now conform with MS DRM. (I'm at work now, so I can't copy/paste it, sorry) IIRC, they'll cut off the digital port if you try to play encrypted material through a MS DRM-compliant app, such as WMP.

New SB Live! drivers and DRM

Do you use WinMX? I'm curious to know if that's happening to anyone else. I'm using (or at least WAS using) the latest version, 3.22.

New SB Live! drivers and DRM

Progress report: Well, starting the day after (yesterday), I started getting PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGEDAREA BSODs on boot. I couldn't successfully boot til I went to safe mode. I uninstalled the new driver set, went back to the next most recent drivers, and guess what? No more BSODs. These new drivers (and DRM) are bad news. Oh, that reminds me. After I installed the WMP security patch, I get the exact same BSOD whenever I try to run, uninstall, or even DELETE WinMX, which worked fine for weeks before. This DRM stuff sucks. I'll sign a petition if you get one going.

    Strange Hum in Diablo 2

Hope someone can help. I'm running Win2k/SP2/SRP1 on this system: Asus P5A-B 512MB PC133 SDRAM K62-500mhz Voodoo 4 4500 SB Live! Altec Lansing ACS40 speakers I'm currently playing Diablo 2/LOD 1.09d, and in the last 2 days, every time I go into an interior (i.e., dungeon) location, a loud, piercing hum starts coming from my speakers. It slowly builds to the high pitch, and stays there til I exit the interior location, almost in time with the location music. It ONLY does it in those interior places. I haven't made any drastic changes to my system in the last few days (updated Nero and BlackICE Defender, Norton Antivirus defs) or changed the sound settings. All the sound system's physical connections are in solid, no loose plugs, or plugs in the wrong holes. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

    Strange Hum in Diablo 2

Well, just in case anyone's curious, I was able to fix that weird hum. Reinstalled the Live! drivers, and the hum went away. I should've know it'd be something simple. Thanks anyway!
