I recently upgraded my system by installing an Athlon XP 1800 Ever since I put it in my system has become unstable. I am experiencing random lockups and Office applications (Word mainly - refuses to work at all) I did a fresh install of Windows XP pro after putting the chip in. My system specs are :- Win XP 30gb Maxstor HDD 512mb pc133 ram 300w psu dvd drive cdr/rw drive 32mb geforce 2mx gfx caed Sound Blaster L!ve player 5.1 card If anyone has any ideas how I can stop the locking up, it would be much appreciated Thanks for your time in advance

I sent off for some free stickers as described above. This morning I got a CD packed with information on AMD's 'Breakthrough 1.33ghz chip' and new 'AMD-760 MP' chip. I guess I'd better go and buy a sticker. All I'm after is an Athlon one to put on my system case.... which currently has a SuSE sticker on it. Dilligaf

I bought this card yesterday - (As it was going very cheap) and is a lot better than my old gf2mx. Anyway - I noticed as I was putting it in my pc that the onboard fan has three wires. Which suggests to me that it can read the speed of the fan. My question is this. Does anyone know of a utility that can read the fan speed on the card? Cheers Dilligaf

This may sound silly - but what about the reverse. I want to use Mandrake 8.2 as a Router Box..... I have two Windows XP machines. I must be honest I have no experience of Linux :-( It installs ok on the router machine - I can go on the internet and everything just fine... But the other ethernet card is disabled. I've swapped the cables over to see if the card works in linux and it's ok - so it's gotta be a settin in windows OR linux that I don't get. Any help would be MUCH appreciated. It is quite a nice burner isn't it? Also a great step up from my old one 8rx4rw (put it in my wifes pc - she hasn't noticed) I think the best thing i've done with it is create video cd's. My old samsung 709 dvd doesn't read cdr's and the only way i can do a vcd is by doing it on a cdrw. The 12x rewrite is briliant. Dilligaf

Ok - Here's a weird one... I have three Machines at home 2 with windows XP and one with Windows2000 The problem I have is with the windows2000 machine. Specs are K6-II 380mhz 64mb pc100 ram (more on this in a momemnt) 2xNIC cards 1xWestern Digital Pipeline 2mb vga PCI card I use this machine as a router for the other two machines. The 2mb card performs ok for what I use it for... Unless I add more ram. Yup - I nicked an extra 64mb out of my wifes machine and put it in my router taking it up to 128mb ram. As soon as I did this the gfx settigns fell to 16colours. Normally the card will run at 32bit in 800x600 (which is all the monitor does) but as soon as I add the extra ram the properties state the gfx card only has 256k ram instead of 2mb. Aside from buying a new gfx card - which I don't really want to do as it IS only a router - does anyone have any ideas as to what's going on here? Don't get me wrong it works OK with 64mb - but I was wondering if there would be less HDD use if it had 128mb. Dilligaf (thanks for your time)

I've got a problem With my Media Player.... If I open a window with audio in it - eg my mp3 folder and double click then theres no problem - Media Player pops and plays the file. If - on the other hand - I try to open a file from Media Player it immidiately locks up and hangs untill I terminate it from task manager. Does anyone have any idea how to get it working again? Due to a new Hdd - This XP is a pretty new installation - I've only got MS Office XP and Dungeon Siege on here so far. Dilligaf

I played with this for a couple of days and gave up in the end. Seeing as there was hardly anything on the hdd anyway - I reinstalled Windows. Dilligaf

I've downloaded these drivers... Everytime I run the setup it says that it could not detect any Sound Blaster Audio card in my system. I have a Live 5.1 Any ideas what's going on? Dilligaf

Hello again!!!! Yep - you are all being so helpful that I've got another question I have a Live 5.1 sound card in my system hooked up to a set of 5.1 speakers. About every 3rd or 4th time XP restarts the sound only comes out of the front 2 left/right speakers. I'm using the XP drivers. Any ideas? Dilligaf

Thanks to those who posted in a previous thread. I managed to sort ouy my badly behaved 1800 chip by buying a new motherboard (due to budgest restraints it was the cheapest I could get - a Gigabyte 7ZXE)- but it doesn't lock up anymore. Anwyay - my qestion... What is the best CPU cooler I can put on it? My budget is around £20 UK sterling. I've managed to track down a ThermalTake Volcano 7+ for £20.57 including p&p - is this any good? My current temps range from 50 - 58oC. Thanks for your time.

Well people - it's in!!! I had some probs the first time i powered it all up - with temps going over 70oC!!! But since I took it off and reapplied the thermal grease my temps are now 44 idle and 49 under full load. Still not as cool as i'd like it but better. Oh and yes - it does sound like a 747 taking off :-) Dilligaf

Follow up :- I've tried moving the L!ive card now. No luck At the moment I've just set the jumper to 100(200)mhz fsb to underclock the chip - we'll see what happens then.

I have a geforce2MX and my playback is a hell of a lot better with pdvd4 if I turn the hardware off as well. The picture is a lot more fluid and less 'bouncy' i suppose is the best way I can describe it. Dilligaf

What i've tried..... Installing Via updates (gfx definately much faster) I actually got rid of officeXP this morning and installed Office2k instead (this has yet to lock up) Can't really try a different psu (the only other one i've got is a 250w) I re-installed windowsXP this morning. I ran 3Dmark2002 for a couple of hours with no problems at all (score was 2770 - not brilliant but better than yesterday) Then I tried OfficeXP and it was doing the same thing, which was when I re-installed Office2k Still testing. I think it's something to do with OfficeXP.

sorry - i didn't say in my specs It's an MSI 6330 I'm using pc133 ram
