Your company is most likely interconnected with a VPN solution; This differs from the leased line approach you describe in that your company would not own all the cable between its various satellites. There is little benefit to the leased line approach, as modern VPN implementations are nearly impervious to intrusion, and are extremely expensive by comparison.
IF that is the case, then you need to request from your IT powers that be a VPN remote client as well as login authentication (not to the network, to the firewall) They may or may not require you to have a defined fixed IP to do this, depending on the software they are using; if it isnt... I suggest getting an IP phone so your roommates can use the phone while you're online...
