Linksys Wireless PCI Cards and Win2K
Silver-Dagger replied to ascdesigns's topic in Everything New Technology
I do not know if this will work but it is worth a try. Download FireDaemon from http://www.firedaemon.com/. This will allow you to run the utility program as a service. -
I came up with this URL http://sony.storagesupport.com/cdrw/crx160ea1dwn.htm The site said that you need to be running SP3.

Need advice for logon script win98 clients
Silver-Dagger replied to duhmez's topic in Everything New Technology
Just use DEL to delete the msnmsgr.ex_ and msmsgs.ex_ before you do the rename. DEL does not ask for confirmation. You could also use the /F option so it will force the delete of a file if it is set to 'read only'. -

M$'s plan to tie the O/S with the BIOS
Silver-Dagger replied to videobruce's topic in Everything New Technology
Well it looks like it might be back to pen, paper, snail mail, and board games. -
OK working from memory here but I think after doing a ghost/drive image/whatever you boot from the cd into a repair console and type fixmbr. This is like the fdisk /mbr command for 9x but will install the mbr for NT/2k/xp/2k3.

Stupid Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Silver-Dagger replied to Dharmesh's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Yes this is a worm called MSBLAST. It is not that old (about 3 months). What you will need to do is run your antivirus update and then scan your machine. If you do not have an antivirus you can goto this link and get a removal tool http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/FixBlast.exe Then what I would do is goto this link http://grc.com/files/DCOMbob.exe and run dcombob. You can disable the RPC service with this tool. Only about 2% of the entire Windows community ever use this service so you will be fine to disable it. Good Luck. -
Windows 2000/Windows 98 dual boot - Not working
Silver-Dagger replied to nvivison's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Win 9X has to be installed on the primary partition on the primary hard drive. NT, 2000, and XP can be on any drive. What you will need to do is wipe all drives, install 98 on the C drive and then install 2000. Donot do an upgrade but an install to another partition. This will do what you want. -
If you can see the drive(s) in DOS booted from a floppy then ghost will work. You just need to create the ghost DOS disks. Much better to do this kind of imaging in DOS instead of Windows.

Good Job at explaining what is going on and what you have done. Just have a couple of questions... How much RAM do you have? Is your page file set for windows to handle? How much free space do you have on your C: drive?

Check your BIOS. Some of the newer ATX motherboards have a setting to power the machine backon after a power outage.

Guys what is the best way to scan for trojans on my computer
Silver-Dagger replied to pr-man's topic in Software
spybot search & destroy is rather good too. -
Notepad (or pico on Linux) and a browser is the best programs you can get along with learning HTML, JavaScript, JAVA, PERL or PYTHON, XML, PHP, ect. I know other people are not going to agree with me but remember this. No matter how well a program is written, noone can write a progam that writes programs for any situation. You always wind up tweeking the code by hand so you might as well just learn the code to begin with and do it all by hand. Just my $.02.

$1.49US per gallon here in the MidWest (central Missouri).

The only notebok/laptop that advertises that it is upgradable is AlienWare. Most of the other ones are not. Even if they use regular sockets you have to be sure that the bios can handle the new CPU.

Have you registered the slayerui.dll? If not then check out this URL http://www.techspot.com/tweaks/win2k_compatiblity/index.shtml

Roaming profiles will download EVERYTHING for that user that would normaly be in the 'documents and settings' folder. This includes the 'My documents' folder so if your users use the my documents to store files then this will have to be downloaded and up loaded every time they logon and off. Also the users cookies, temp folder, temp internet files, ect. You get the idea. I like the idea of roamnig profiles and was using it under NT but MS went overboard with 2000.

How many processes do you have running?

You can try this: http://www.driverforum.com/controller4/1620.html I also found this on DriverGuide: Sidewinder 3d pro in win2k --------------------------------- 1) Download the win98 driver 2) Run the win98 driver until it informs you the driver isnt compatible with the current version of windows 3) Alt-Tab out of the driver installation and find where it unzipped the temp files to (a good idea is to open the temp folder first and see the new folder which appears) 4) Copy the new temp files to a new folder 5) Complete the anstallation procedure (ie. it will exit because of wrong version) 6) Install the joystick in the game controllers panel by clicking "Add Other" and click "Have Disk". Point it to the directory where you copied the installation files to. I think I used the one called "sidewinder autodetect" or something along those lines. 7) Finished. If you find its not detecting it, simply refresh it a shitload of times (sometimes i click refresh and then properties while its trying to detect the joystick, and then hold down 'r' until it stops beeping at me), but it will work.

Nope see no problems at all. I am assuming that your router is setup for DHCP. Also I would install the SP4 version of 2000. Even better, if you have or can make a slipstreamed version then it will work even better. 2000 install is rather straight forward so you should not have any problems with it. Do remember that you will have to have 2000 drivers for your video card, printer, sound card, ect. Good luck.

direct update will do this though a router. It is shareware but you can try it for free. I know that it is cheep to buy it.

OK. I am looking for a program that will trottle the bandwidth for one IP on my network. Here is my setup: W2K server running Winroute as a gateway connected to a switch. I only have a 256/128 cable connection and I have one user that is sucking up all of the bandwidth. Even to the point where a PING can not get out! ;( Anybody know of a progy to do this?

Thanks for the reply's. bandwidthcontroller sounds just like what I am looking for.
