Found the problem. It was bootvis. I had set it up to run 2 passes and then optimize. I had to interrupt it after the first pass and chose to optimize at that point. Even the the operation seemed to be complete, it wasn't. I re-ran bootvis for 1 pass and optimized and the problem is now solved.

I have Windows XP Pro. I have recently noticed that the "trace.log" found under C:\Windows\System 32\LogFiles\ WMI has been growing way out of proportion- up to 1.5 gigs in size. I have all counters disabled with exctrlst.exe but this sucker still grows. Thankfully I can dual boot and delete this monster on the Win2K side of this machine. Any ideas on what is going on and how to disable this? Thanks

Pegasus MAIL- I've used it for years. Highly configurable and totally FREE

Went straight to the registry and now all is well. Thanks for your patience. Now hopefully with the new service pack coming, WinXP Pro will become less of a resource hog. Even though I've tweaked XP to within an inch of it's life for performance, I find programs demanding too much CPU time and memory- The same apps that run on Win 2K flawlessly demanding little resources. Ah but that's another thread

An any event, I turned autoplay off but am still getting a window listing the contents of the CD. It's pesky and annoying especially when I'm trying to burn data files with Nero. Any other ideas? Thanks

I know this is a simple probably often asked question but I've found nothing recently while searching on it and would ask for help. Whenever I insert a CD with data files into my CDRW I experience a pause and then am presented with a screen showing a listing of all files found on the disk.I do not wish to view the list of files and am asking what I need to do to turn this feature off. Basic and straightforward. Thanks in advance

I recently got cable modem after years of struggling with dial-up. My question is simple. I could monitor my modem log and get approximate speeds recorded as I went through a dial-up session. Is there any way to do this with nic/cable modem so I would have a log of download/upload speeds that would periodically update and I could access as I needed. I haven't yet done a search on this topic in this forum but plan to start now. Thanks in advance

First post in a long while. let me preface this by saying that I have a long history with Windows NT going back to NT 3.5-3.51. I did some beta testing for NT 4.0 as well as Windows 2000. NT has been my primary operating system for years. I have studied tweak after tweak, implementing those that seemed beneficial, have always kept up with latest drivers, service packs, regular defrag .... etc. Since installing XP and tweaking the hell out of it, I've come to the conclusion that it is a resource hog, requiring much more ram and a faster processor. I have two identical computers one with XPpro the other with 2000pro- same processor(Athlon T-bird)/ram(512 of cas2 Micron) and HD and virtually identical software. The XP machine gobbles up much more ram and system resources doing identical tasks. Not presenting myself as some sort of expert, I am not. but hoping that service pack 1 for XP will address some of the bloat that seems to bog down. Better drivers, memory leaks? who knows. I only know what I experience on a daily basis. That's my two cents worth
