Happened with me, too. Took forever to launch, resulting sometimes to total lockup. If more apps were running in the back or after a long sessions, completely froze the system. Eventually, I took it off and isntalled the good ole 2.6. No probs anymore

Anyone had luck with this? I downloadd it from OldGames.com and it's supposd to be the full, complete thing. OK, when I start, I get the intro without sound (even with VSDM), start menu and then it starts complaining for not having enough memory and whatnot. So, either the game isn't complete after all (it should: it's abandonware and the site is credible) or then it just won't run in NT. Any help would be appreciated
-
Hey thanks! I was already losing my hope with the game. Now, let's see what we can see...

I want to buy a cordless keyboard and a mouse and would like to get the Logitech's ones, since everybody seems to be quite enthusiastic about it. But how does the mouse behave in a game, especially in fast paced one? I've heard that cordless mice tend to lag behind badly. If so, is there any GOOD cordless mouse with affordable price for gaming?

When I'm installing Thief (Sold-out version), the movies won't load and install. I get a message 'Cannot install movie success.avi' but it won't install any other cimenatics either, except the death-scene . When trying to copy the avis directly from a disk, I get a message 'Cannot copy. A CRC-error'. I've patched up the game with everything needed, including a ptach that's specifically supposed to make the movies run but with no success- how could there be when they won't even install, dammit. Anyone has a clue what's the problem here?
-
Yeah, I'll think try I it on another drive first. Odd thing, though, that previously it installed the avis just fine, and now only one. Go figure.
-
Well, I cleaned the disk and at least I can't see any scratches on it. But it doesn't mean that there wouldn't be= bad eyes . The avis used to install just fine, but now I've tried several times with same results. Knowing how hard many cd-drive trays can be on your disks, scratched cd is a possibility. Guess I'll go and buy another, different version and see how it works. Thanks guys, now matter how this turns out

Thank's, mate! I'll think we have winner(s). read some reviews about the hardware mentioned here and I'll think I go with Logitech (as originally was going to ) The cordless keyborad+mouse is the first choice, but I'll probably go and buy also another mouse: they tend to break if things don't go the way I want to

Hmm, lotsa different thoughts so far Keep it coming! Yes, I've eard about MX 700, too, and it seems to be pretty interesting tool indeed, but way out of my price range. So far, it seems a tie between my old 'new' keyboard (3 Euros! Works like a charm) + wired optical mouse and Logitech's cordless, but these other cordless mice will also be considered. Basically, I actually wouldn't need new mouse+keyboard that badly, but I'm just sick and tired of all the wires on my desk: keyboard, mouse, earphones, joystick etc. Having cordless keyboard+mouse would seem to be the most logical thing to start with: you use them most and it's cheaper than getting new earphones or stick. Have to think about this a bit longer still Oh, and here, we don't have problems with batteries: everything is recycled/destroyed safely. But the weight and the expenses- hmm?

Not exactly a RPG either, like System Shock's, but I very much recommend Deus Ex. In some magazine, think it was, PCG, they ranked it among the Top 10 of all time best PC games. Great stuff, although I really do hope they improve moving for the next one, due to come out in June: you get stuck in the corners, couches and big metal crates tend to move with you and climbing the ladders and jumping can be irritating some times. But as for the gameplay and story, worth checking out, to say the least. Cheap, too
-
Aliens versus Predator. Definitely. On first time as a Marine, I thought:'Somebody get me outta here! I'm not moving an inch anynmore! I stick to my guns and waste them here until no more shows up!' Wrong decision= they respawned pretty fast When people sometimes ask what game I would recommend, I innocently recommend this AvP 2 wasn't half as scary as AvP GE, except when you run out of juice of your shoulder lamp AND flares at the same time and you here the bugs screeching near. No fun.

Qfixapp and ACT are the same. Since this looks to be VESA problem solely, ACT probably won't fix it, but the compatibility issue at least will be ruled out. Check this site out and follow the instructions in a thread to see how to fix TF with ACT:can't hurt trying www.ehnet.org message boards-> emperorshammer-> technical support-> 'Tie95 in Win XP fix'. It's about Xp but practically the same for 2k.
-
Well, if you have the ACT 2.6 (yes, that's the one we've been talking about) installed, launch it, select 95 or 98 layer, in 'Fixes' find and uncheck 'Emulate joystick', with browse choise find your TF folder and tie.exe there ( a Tie Fighter icon) and click. You'll get the path in text in a space in the launcher and then just click 'Run'. That should do it. Try that and tell us if it worked.
-
Well, I can't say abythibg for the VESA problem, but you should try the ACT and see it that does it. You'll need it anyway to run TF and many other 9x games. Win2k has ACT 1.5 and XP if I remember correctly 2.5. They're not the same. You can get ACT for 2k from Service Packs (SP3) or I could e-mail it to you. I got mine from adamvjackson from here. You also need Application Compatibility Updates. Tie Coll. CD should be the same as Tie95, so ACT should run it just fine. Unless the VESA thing is the culprit.
-
I also have a question for this: I got Win2kPro + GF4,and I was wondering if would it be enough just to run the game through ACT? Soon , I'll also dig out TF'95 and would like to know in advance how's it gonna work? Previously, with same OS but GF2 it worked fine with ACT without VDMSound. Kinda stupid question, but there you go ;(

Until someone comes up with s specific answer, I think you should check your system and your hardware: is everything OK? I had a similar problem with Thief2 and AvP2 on my Win2kPro, and the main fault was that Sound Blasters drivers were anything but in order (without me knowing anything about that) and that effected Windows so that it wouldn't function properly. Eventually, the whole harddrive busted So check your system first; there's probably something wrong with Windows or your hardware/drivers. Having the latest drivers doesn't always mean everything is OK.
-
OK, I've got Win2kPro with plenty of resources, but I cannot get some simulators work. It's probably my Saitek Cyborg 3d stick, which is God knows how causing this. When I start to play Battle for Naboo or Rogue Squadron (I know, they totally suck but I just want to get rid off them), I cannot assign commands to the stick. The menus also act real wildly, cursos 'working' and moving on their own, so I can't lock it down to where I want it. Rogue Squadron also crashes from get-go, even though I've profile created in Win98 and using ACT. Sounds Ok, graphics too, DX says everything is OK, latest Detonators and others. All the other games work fine, too, except JK and MotS sometimes crashed back to desktop when loading a quicksave. AvP, MOHAA, X-Wing: no problems. So, this is somehow related to drivers, I'm sure, but I just can't figure out how. Norton Utilities and DX says everything is a-OK ;( Help, would really be appreciated, since there are those few games I want get over with and then proceed to the good ones. Thanks already

No dice. My Cyborg is eight button stick with throttle and hat, but there is no alternative like this. Calibrating works fine up till button 4, but it won't recognise any other buttons. I've uninstalled and re-isntalled the drivers for the stick, by first downloading and then through direct web installation, but at point where the install prog says 'Plug in your controller, it will take several seconds for the controller to install blah blah' I've waited 10 minutes without anything happening. When I go to Game Options and install from there, it works allright (except the calibration bit). I just took a spin with X-Wing and the ships make this odd jerking movement on it's own and drops the speed by itself. Cannot be just the stick causing this. Totally new to me, all this. Until now, everything has worked just OK, with same Os and SPs.
-
Apparently, you must use the Win98 layer with Application Compatibility Toolkit and with directx disable sound acceleration. Try that at first.

This issue has probably been answered before, but I can't find it, so here goes: I've had some serious probs with Win2k lately. Lost the hard drive twice, the other went completely kaputt, and I've also had a couple of crashes/re-installations of Win2kPro. I'm beginning to think it's the service packs that does it. I've read somewhere, that if you don't have the 'official' disk, the SPs can cause problems. Mine is a copy from a friend of mine. Now when I don't have the SPs, everything is running smoothly, whenbefore with SPs I had to reinstall Win after 2 days, at worst. So, the question is, are these probs related to the not-so official disk and/or SPs, did I just forget something when installing the SPs, is there a way go around using them and are they really necessary; security and reliability wise? I would need to use the ACT 2.6, which you can't anywhere else but from SP3, so this is kinda important.

Great! A lot of good ideas here. I also got to think it might be something to do with either Dx9 or SB Live drivers. I've heard that SB has had some serious issues with it and definitely noticed downgrading in performance with DX9+ the latest Detonators. Graphics in otherwise many good games (graphic wise) turned really cheap looking. For trying something different, I installed bit older Detonators (40.82) and it worked better, because uninstalling Dx is such a drag. But I'll take a shot for installing 8.0 (which worked be tter than 8.1, IMO)) and update the Sb drivers and see what happens. My CD-RW is the cheapo Phillips PCRW4816. Otherwise it works fine, but sometimes the writing speed is slower than it should be capable of. My SP3s were installed directly over win2kPro from MS.

Well, my Maxtor is something called 'Maxtor 40,9 DMA-133 7200 rpm' that doesn't say much, but in the system management it says also 'Maxtor 6E040L0'. The last one that busted was also Maxtor, Fluid DMAX+8. Error messages? Take a pick. Eeverything from almost always booting giving something about having to check physical memory (my OS is in Finnish, so I can't translate all the tech jargo, sorry), to cannot find harddrive, I/O error with some hardware, though Windows says eveything's OK. Powersupply is brand new, bought this thing in Oct1st. I don't believe it's the drivers, either. Latest Detonators and Dx, Sound Blaster Live straight from the CD as well as CD-R drivers. This is quite odd, since the software is exactly the same that I used in my previous comp without any failures. But, of coursem the good ole way is to take out some software one by one and see what happens. Even though I said that I'm not too sure about the necessity of Sps, I'm aware about the security fixes they include and actually feel kinda naked without them. That's why I'm asking here; I'd rather would have them but being totallly sick and tired of fighting with the box all the time, I'm also ready to ditch them, if it helps. But as Christianb said, it shouldn't be the culprit. I dunno, I'm not too comp literate, have to admit.
-
Yeah, I agree with you about the absolute necessity of Sps. 'If it ain't broken, don't fix it'. It just that MS pushes these things pretty agressively, so it kinda gives you the feel that you're gonna die if you don't get them, heh. The ACTs, both 1.5 and 2.6 are total pain to get anywhere, believe me: I've tried. I'm still wondering, though, whether the crashes and HD damages have anything to do with the copied Win2k CD and the SPs. Apparently, the pirated XPs really don't like SPs. I dunno, that's just what I've heard.

Simple as that. I'm playing Hidden & Dangerous deluxe and AvP GE and taking screenies a lot, but for some reason most of them turn out totally black and about 1.44 kb (yes, kb)in size. I don't think it has anything to do with movement in the game, since the same thing happens also when I'm standing put. Drivers should be OK (Detonator 40.72) and well DirectX (8.1b). There is some clipping in the games, though. I've tried with different resolutions but without effect. I'd appreciate any help on this, since we're putting up a H&D site and my job is to get the screenies for it.Thanks in advance

I understand that the DC is a bit hard to get these days. At least the European release was withdrawn from the market at some point because of bugs. www.natalieportman.com has most of the deleted scenes, but at least I can't get sound work with them. My DVD works fine, though, so I don't know what the original problem was. hope you can get if from somewhere
