Screen goes all weird, huh? I have never seen that happen; only prolems so far is the stupid throttle button issue and the fact that sometimes I have to play a previous, finished race to unlock the next one. I completely agree with ConQuesco that it's practically unacceptable for Lucasarts not to release a fix for the Racer and for the other games as well. I mean, they rushed all the Ep1 games out to the market unfinished and haven't done nothing to finish them properly. Also, if you think X-wing or TIE Figther, how much work would it take to make them run properly in Win2k or XP, without ACTs and with 3d acceleration. I asked twice help from LA for the Racer problem, without getting even a frigging 'We're sorry' type of answer. Bad publicity,LA, bad publicity.

why does this happen? My config is the same, only some drivers have been loaded or upgraded and now the ZA takes a minute or two to start up, when previously it went off in a whizz. Time for a new firewall, perhaps (I seriosuly hope not)?
-
OK, so I'm first to admit that I'm not computer literate, but neither is my girlfriend, hence a major problem. I installed Win2kPro a week ago just fine except that Cd-drives drivers weren't exactly right, so that when installing, some of the WINNT files didn't install properly. Result ws some game crashes, no CD-audio and occasional Windows apps probs but nothing too big to fix. In comes my better half,'fixes' the problem by up[censored] (she thought it meant fixing!) Win2k, now in NTFS over the original FAT32. Nothing works. It takes 15 minutes to get everything to desktop and then some to launch apps (if lucky). Question:what the hell to do? No repair disk available, and since I used to use Mac, not familiar with DOS. So basically, what do I type to DOS or to the installation disks commands either to repair or to format the HD. I'm kinda hurry to get everything to run over this weekend, so help would be eternally remembered

I'll try another question in this same post to see if it works, before posting a new one. It's related to the same issue as my first message in this post. I finally got the PC working by running the repair options from the Win2kPro disk. Now the thing starts but still very, very slowly. It takes forever to get everything on the desktop, but once it finally does, everything runs smoothly. Diagnostics says everything is OK. What is most concerning, is that my F-Secure 5.40 starts last, slowly, when before it went off among the first apps. Win2kPro+SP3 AMD Duron 1200 Geforce 4 Ti 4200 64Mb Sound Blaster Live 40 GB on HD, over 30 GB left 256 Mb RAM E-IDE CD-Rom 52X/AKH I use very much the same apps as in my previous comp, PII 233MHz, 3.2 GB, GeForce 2 32Mb, Sound blaster 128, 128 MB RAM; with this configuration everything worked without a single major problem.

Thanks again, pardner. Though, I managed to find it mysefl, too. Things definitely run faster now when switched back to the previous version. I'm beginning to think it's time to switch to another firewall anyway- someone here said that he had cracked ZA several times, so it makes you think, doesn't it. Any idea whether the paid version is any better and more stable, or is it really time to reconsider for using ZA?
-
Hmm, never thought of that!? Luckily I do have one, so I better give it a shot- who's it gonna hurt anyway for trying. Good idea

;( Ehm, I don't know what happened, but all of a sudden the darm thing decided to co-operate after all. Maybe it was the heavy hammer, which I waved in a threatening manner before it that did it I mean, I did precisely what you said; in fact, I've done before a couple of times with other OSs without anything like this happening. The CD is fine, so it leaves the CD-drive to be the only possible culprit , though at diagnostics box everything is seemingly OK and I've re-installed the drivers from the web. I guess I just have to dig deeper and see what's the prob. Thanks for your answer, though, mate!

Can anyone tell me, what's going on when I try to install Thief 2 for my Win2Pro. At first, when inserting the CD I receive a message saying something like 'Application or DLL:D\MSVBVM50.DLL is not applicable NT-' blah blah blah. After opening the CD and trying to run two setup exes, the InstallShield goes on 100% and after that nothing. The CD spins for a few seconds and then stops. I've read in another forum that it might take up to five minutes until the installation really kicks in, but I waited 15(!)and nothing happens. Weird. 8) Also, is there a way to run the Silent Hunter 1 in Win2Pro? I'd really like to play it, but in this forums compatibility solutions they simply say 'No dice'.

Of all crappiest thing(game related, anyway ) just happened! I tried once again to install, and the same thing otherwise BUT, when I take the disc out the underside of it has like 'melted' spots on it, as it the CD had come to a complete halt while being lasered all the time ! Those spot cannot have been there previously since I got as far as InstallShield starting to run. I don't have a clue what this means, since it has never happeend before- is it really the cd-drive or was it the result of a faulty disk? Help on this would be duly appreciated, since I don't dare to run the cd-drive before this is solved, OK?
-
Yes, I have Now I get the installer up, with Sold-Out splash screen with Shockwave stuff and all, then the Install Shield kicks-in, reports quickly 99% ready (IS, that is), then back to splash screen, disk spins fow awhile, I wait 15 minutes and then zilch. QFixApp didn't work either . It can't be because of the CD-drive or drivers, since they work with all the other apps. Really odd. ;(
-
Yup. Just installed everything ot my new comp past weekend, so the system is up-to-date. Just tried to install again, and now at least I got the Sold-out installer up, without the error message. After that, nothing. Also, the 33Mb patch is already in place.
-
No luck. I think that is what you so with SS and Thief 1. Same thing happend- InstallShield comes up, disk spins for awhile and then nada.

Of all the crazy things I've heard of! No really, credit to true grit of that guy.Inpressive.

No idea what that was about 8) but you should check this site out, too. www.talibanreunited.com[/url]

Do these things help you with Broadband? I don't use one, and I have a 1.5MB cable connection. I don't think I've ever had a corrupted download. I have to agree to a large extent with this. I'm about to swtich my 'normal' cabel model to 526 kb/s cable and a friend of mine who already has it and who downloads lots of large files, says she (yes: she) doesn't need DL managers anymore, except for some really big files or is she is just impatient Modems with as high speed as 1.5 MB; I think it's a bit overdoing using the managers with them. And yes, there're lots of sites where you can't use managers, but it's still good to have one around - just in case.
-
Yeah, I've used a few/tried a few downlaod managers and they all seem to split some files every now and then, especially it the actual downlaod site/server is beyond par or if you're downloading from ftp. Recently, I've settled for FlashGet 1.3. It is fast, really, and works quite well, except sometimes for the reasons mentioned above. they say it's free for trail and then you have to register it, but I've been using it for over 3 months now totally free!?

Is it possible to run QFixApp 2.0 in Win2kPro? OK, so it is intended for XP, I know, but I'm getting a bit desperate to try anything, since ACT1.5 seems to have disappeared totally. I've spent hours looking for it. Or is there some alternative compatibility toolkit for Win2k?
-
Dang. Well, I guess I'll have to install the SP3 as well, then. ACT1.5 comes with a quite impressive range of fixes, 130 in total. that's why it's a shame you can't find it anywhere. Wonder what happened to it? I used it to run older '95/'98 games in Win2kPro and it worked like a charm.
-
Holy crap, am I actually getting rescued from depths of hell here!? 2.6, eh? Is it necessary to install SP3 in oder to make ACT to run (please say no)? I've always installed only the critical patches, since I don't want tons of fixes for problems I don't have (never use faxes, Outlook etc.)and multilingual help files for them ,hogging outsanding amounts of HD space.

Which is better? Sygate Firewall or Norton Internet Security
Tom-boy replied to pr-man's topic in Security
Zone Alarm. Definitely. Free version is good enough on itself and paid even better and costs fraction of others. Check out Leaktest (Google search) and their comments on firewalls. -
Can anyone here recommend one or the other of these apps? Previously, I've used ACDsee, but it was a bit too hefty and too expensive for my needs, so I switched to Irfanview. It has proven to be quite nice editor/movie viewer, but recently I have also heard good comments about Slowview,ie. it is supposed to be a combination of the good features of both ACDsee and IV. There's also been some negative comments about, especially in running in Win2k environment. Can anyone clarify these issues? ;(

Great, thanks a bunch, Avalanche! I took a peek before replying and it seems to have what I was looking for Now all there is to do is choosing between alternatives. Thanks again.
