In nero when i tell it to test my drive speeds this is what i get: IDE HDD (Partitioned) C:\ 12,172 Kb/s F:\ 14,912kb/s IBM ULTRA SCSI master (partitioned) E:\ 11,648 KB/s (BOOT HDD) H:\ 8,842 KB/s IBM ULTRA SCSI Slave D:\ 3,443 Kb/s G:\5,900 KB/s I think SCSI should be faster than IDE? i was not dong anything while this test was taking place: DK440LX Dual PII~300Mhz 512Mb RAM Windows XP Yes yes, i Am getting a new PC soon and moving up to modern technology...

The thing is with some modems that connect thru USB (ADSL is the best example), they use up your CPU cycles, like Soft modems/WINmodems. Whereas if they are internal PCI/ connect through an NIC card they dont use any (NIC cards have onboard processors, like the some of the office connect's). The performance loss is minimal/unnoticable for high spec systems, say a PIII 600 MhZ class system with a USB controller will be below 2% CPU usage, so any CPU over 1 Ghz, Athlon/P4, the performance loss will be negligable! hope thats helped....

It sems we have the same problem, i used my original CD, 5.x and the image quality was very good, then i upgraded to the 6.x drivers and the image quality went down (screen flickered...the usual). So i turned back to the good old 5.x ones and all went well again! Oh, im using Windows XP, but i had the same Issue with 2k!

its better to use USB 2, and yes its much easier. the bad thing about the bandwidth, so its not that good if you have a lot of USB stuff, I only have a camera and a USB DSL modem! -
Some boards dont tell yu the temp correctly, so thats probably what it might be....

Thnx man that did the trick!

Hi all, Im having problems with IE6 on XP. It seems after a reboot, when i launched internet explorer and went on different sites, they all seemed 'bigger' than before. As in text size, and image size. An example is on the http://clone.cd site i could see the whole site without scrolling down, but now i have to scroll down since its too big. Its the same with windows update and NT-Compatible. Ive made it slightly smaller by having the setting, 'igonore font sizes on web pages' checked in accesability under Internet options. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Well, it seems that now we know where to point stupid, ignorant etc.. customers/friends when they ask a stupid question! Dont waste ur breath, just tell them to look at Compaqs website, unless that brings up another barrage of questions about how to use the internet, then dont bother! My own personal experiance with this was when one of my friends asked me to change his CD drive, and so i did. The next day he told me to change it again, this time I asked why, and he said: "becuase my CD's in the drive always make noises", I then informed him, in the clamest state any one can be in while holding back their rage at the other persons stupidity, that these noises were becuase of the ball bearings in his Samsung drive adjusting to different speeds (which was stated in the manual), he didnt beleive me so i showed him my Samsung drive on my PC, which made exactly the same noises. Then i told him, next time you buy anything always read the manual, and beleive it! And i never heard another stupid complain again!

This might kinda work, ok go into Start --> Settings --> Control pannel --> System, then click on the Advanced tab, then the 'Virtual memmory, performance..etc' settings button. Then check the box that sais best performance! This might ipmrove performance quite a bit! -
Hi all, I have recently bought fifa 2001 for myself. The game installs fine and starts fine and plays 1 match fine, then my problems start: 1) If i play 1 match then save the game, the game freezes and ultimatley crashes. 2) if i play 1 game and continue without saving it will get to the loading screen then freeze and crash once again. 3)sometimes it wont even get as far as completing a match and just crash. These problems are all on this machine and my other XP machines, its not that high spec and its not mine : Dual PII 300mhz 512Mb RAM ATI Rage Turbo Windows XP Pro PIII 1Ghz 512Mb RAM nVidia TNT2 Pro Windows XP Pro As i said it works fine on win 98 but it gets all these problems on XP. Ive been trying to find an update for the game with no luck, if anyone knows the URL, i would be grateful if you would give it to me. Anyone have any ideas?

Make sure ur hub is on and the NIC is not disabled (check in device manager), the other PC shoudl be on aswell. If not then there might be a problem on the 98 machine.
-
i had the same problem with Win2K and 98. except that the win2k machine could access the 98 machine, but that couldnt access the 2k machine. When I upgraded to XP Pro I used the 'set-up a small home or office network' button in the My netowrk places folder, and voila. It set up the network, and allowed access to all folders that you share, you can also activate Internet connection sharing aswell.

Yeah its true NT 3.51 did come before 95, but I havent used NT 3.51 at all! I started to use NT 4.0 when my 95 system wouldnt work properly, all those years ago!!! Thats when I realised what kind of OS NT really is, and thats why i got 2k Pro when it came out, and XP Pro!!! And on the Anti-Virus matter, I still like Sophos Sweep for NT most.
-
Yeah well, i was just talking about NT in general, not a specific version!!! I know that NT 3.51 was ok, but NT4 was had more to give really. Anyway as i said i was talking about NT in general, but if you still feel i should change to NT4 let me know!
-
My Mistake! Sorry!
-
Why is iy always me who brings up the name Sophos? has anyone even bothered to try Sophos Sweep for NT? Its damn good. It automatically detects the viruses via the IC monitor, and leaves it to you to do what you want with it!!! Pretty good, if you keep the files up to date and surf the net alot (like me!!!). others arent bad, but my experiance with Sophos makes me recommend it to anyone!!!
-
Yeah Sophos does support cleaning a virus from DOS (say if u got a virus and you cant boot into windows, it does it from DOS, its small enough to fit on floppy!). Go on their site (www.sophos.com) and try the evaluation. Sophos Sweep for NT is a great anti-virus for WinNT/2k/XP, and i bet they have something for win9x/ME. Go and see!!! The Inter-Check monitor that comes with it is a great thing. It tells you that you may have a virus and leaves it to you to deal with it, using the actual Sweep for NT program. Saved me from countless trojans!!! Its definetly one of the best Ant-Virus programs ive worked with, and it doesnt use up too much resources (less than 1% CPU on the slowest pc we got, 133mhz). Go try Norton Anti-Virus too, thats pretty good aswell.
