How to move programs to another drive?

Use NTFS drive mounted as a folder. First, close everythig. (Safe mode) Rename \program files\ to |progold, and create a new program files folder on c:. Cut and paste all the stuff in program files onto another drive in the root which I believe must be dynamic. Keep the c:\program files\ folder intact. Then in disk management on the new drive, right click>set drive letter an dpath" choose to "mount into a folder on supported NTFS partition" Browse to choose the now empty c:\program files\ directory. Now windows will think c:\program files is on c: when really it is the other hard disk. (I've not tired this with somehting as volatile as program files, I did it with my \games dorectory. make sure you know how to recover your achine in case it goes terribly wrong. One otherthing tpo note about mounted folder, you cant send folders on them, into recycle bin, you mst hole shift+delete to delete fodlers in the mounted volume.

    Compact Outlook 2000 .PST file

I found a way to do it! Clunky but it works. Go to make a new profile, choose the PST you want to compact. On this properties page it has a copact button, so compact it. Once its compacted, click cancel and do not make a new account. Voila! Compacted in Outlook 2000!

    AV oftware Comparison needed

Poeple say norton is a resource hog, but I tell you, Ive used 2001-2003, and corp 8, millions of times, and never see this enourmous processor hog inaction. Benchmarks while norton is off or on are quite nearly identical. (By off I mean totally shutting down the service, which kills the 20+ threads norton runs. Norton has been so good to me I could not recommendd it highly enough. When getting into the corp vversion, the price can get a little high, but not too bad. The other nice thing about corp is it requires no rebooting and grabs ALL updatyes in one go, again with no rebooting.

    Remote desktop thru ics

ICS does indeed support port forwarding. in the advanced section of ics(settings) there is a list of comon ports to forward (Ftp 21 etc) and you can add your own. Make a new one (Or choose remote desktop one if it is there) give it a groovy name, and set the internal IP you would like that pot sent to.

    Dual booting 98 on NTFS?

Win98 can go on any partition you want (fat32), but c: must be fat32 in either case.
  8. I see this issue with another presario, and I know exactly why it is happening. your big old hands are resting on the laptop, which is pushing down on the touch sensors. be more careful, or disable the mouse click ability of the touch pad. (Goto control panel>mouse. Disabling mouse clicking is perfect, because even if the mouse jumps, it wont be able to click.

    XviD Driver's

Xvid and divx "by default" do not use mp3. they use nothing. they are video codecs. Audio codec is chosen at the time the video is processed. installing DVD playing software on a machine that does not hav e advd drive is a good thing to to. it provides Mpeg-2 and AC-3 playback. Anyone tryintg to watch an svcd or anuything with ac3 audio in it will benefit. For true dvd compliance, the DVD must use AC3 or PCM(uncompressed) audio with sampling rate of 48000 Hz. Mpeg audio, while it will work on most dvd players, is not DVD spec. (Every DVD I have ever analyzed has AC3 audio in it). Mpeg-4 IS an official standard now, it was ratified by the ISO (international standards organisation) this year. Xvid and divx both create 100% compliant mpeg 4 video streams. Except when a bug crops up and makes uncompliant file..... As for the xvid situation, here's the deal. Each codec has an encoding part, and a decoding part, with a directshow decoder being optional. The standard decoder is VFW(video for windows) interface, but using directshow, you can have nice filtering during playback in your video overlay, which results in nicer picture and or better performance. For a while there, xvid did not ship with a directshow component, but it does now. @Genaldar. Encoding audio using AC3 is not "Stupid" it supports multichannel and is pure goodness. For an even better bnefit of using AC3 in avi container, is you can you the native trac ripped right off the dvd, without converting it, maintaining perfect audio quality, and 5.1 if desired. As for "Lecturing to feel important", I was not lecturing, I was educating, because I know alot about these matter. i enjoy helping people out, I like helping people to learn things they didn't know before, and there are alot of confusing issues to deal with videos and video processing on pc's so I made that post to help anyone out who may read it. If you read my other posts in this or any other forum, you will see all I ever try to do is help and be helped, and i do not deserve this unnecessary attack on my character. I'm not looking to start a flmae war here, I do understand that you took what I said out of context, not the way it was intended, and it got you all into a hissy fit, which frankly really surprised me; I thought all I was doing was helping someone out and then it draws a personal attack. Ah well it's all good. it happens. Cheers.

    XviD Driver's

i did answer your question. I said install DVD software such as pwerdvd, or one of the mamy codec packs on the net. The lecturing was added as a value added free service. Homeboy should appreciate it, there's good solid info in there.
  14. I did read above, and this is what im talling about. Reread what I put, and assume "program.exe" is actually, "Setup.exe" for whatever program it is you want to istall. Note that setup.xe does not have an msi file.
  15. Typically laptop drivers are provided by the laptop manufacturer, and as such, always take longer o get released than the reference.

cd keys for win xp pro

If they are both OEM, it won't matter. Both CD key's will work for both installations. Reinstall whichever you like, your slipstream or your recovery, and put in the second available key for your laptop. Make sure to have all your laptop drivers handy before you do this.
  17. Afaik, the software vendor needs to compile it for MSI, unless you have access to the sources. MS office of course is ready to go for your needs. For non MSI you could use a batch file with if exist stuff for example @exho off Rem Installs program.exe if the machine does not currently have it. if exist %systemroot%\installed.txt goto :end echo >%systemroot%\installed.txt \\path\to\program.exe :end Stick this in your logon script and modify the path for what you actually want to install. i'm sure there is a better way to do it perhaps, but this is quick and dirty method, and involves very little effort on your part.
  18. You do this with group policy. First make a share with read and execute permission for everyone, and put your office install files there. beware that using this method only works for software that uses MSI installers. then in active directory users and computers, go to the users, or group, or computers, or Ou etc, that you want to have the software. you can have them assign, publish, or somehting else software. Assign means the software will automagically install when they logon, publish means it will be available to them in add/remove programs. Usint the latter method you will have to memo them somehow to tell them to install it from add remove. Search the web for "group policy" assign publish And I'm sure you'll find lots of resources with howto's. P.S. ISA server is basically microsoft's new proxy server and is unrelated to what you wish to do.

    XviD Driver's

Everyone reading this needs to realise, the audio codec has NOTHING to do with xvid or divx. AVI stans for "Audio video interleeave" the audio can be anything, wav, mp3, Ogg vorbis, AC3. All you need is the proper filter to playit back. Loading DVD playing softwar4e such as powerdvd will install an ac3 codec for you, as well as many of the codec packs floating arournd the net. Divx and xvid refer to, and only to, the video part of the file, which is in every case ISO compliant Mpeg-4 video stream. Mpeg-4 also has an audio speciofication, AAC, which isnt heavily used yet. That is the format thAT apple is selling their "I-tunes" in. Hope you all learned somehting, judging from these posts there are alot of AV(Audio/video) n00bs lurking when it comes to audio and video, I am the man to talk to. Good luck! P.S. Also of note, Ac3 does not necessarily mean 5.1. AC3 can be 2 chanel stereo all the way up to 5.1.

    need drive imageing program

Fre GPL software to do it. "Partimage" It can copy whole parritions. you can download a selfbooting ISo and load it and clone away, free of charge. It's OS is linux but it can do fat/NTFS/ext etc and it has a GUI interface for ease of use. Search google or sourceforge for it.
  23. Windows 98 does not need to be on c:, however its boot files do need to be on c: (msdos.sys, io.sys, command.com, config.sys, autoexec, bat) only was with your onfig, partition magic your c back to fat32, or install win98 onto another hard drive but only after you switched the boot device in the bios. This method will require you go into bios every time to boot each other os.

    Page File Problem

All you gotta do is click on c: in swapfile section, and type in 0 for min and max, then apply. then click on e: and set how you wish, then aply. What you did was have pagefile on both disks. NT can do that, pagefile all over the plaCE.
