Installing an OS without a CD Rom drive

Put hard drive in working machine. Copy the win98 folder from the cd to the hard drive. Put drive back in win98 machine. Run c:\win98\setup.exe from a dos booted environment. http://drd.dyndns.org some sweet bootdisks there. From what I hear, this will probably be the easiest way for you.
  3. So my WIFI internet went down the other day, so I had to install a modem as a backup for access. But I did NOT want to shutdown. I had million webpages open and other projects open etc. So I figured, Ill hibernate the PC and install the modem and see what happens. Well, it didn't work. Upon resuming the screen just goes black and I needed to boot fresh. (I did not thinik it would work, but I figured MAYBE it would) Is there a proper way to do it, knd of like hotplugging a pci device, except it isnt really hot because its not turned on. This is winodws 2000 server.
  4. Good info to know. It didn't work so I woont do it again. it was fun to try.

    Emulating DirectSound

@ aliem: Searc microsoft website for a program called "inuse.exe" It wil let you overwrite files that are in use. Just takes a reboot so you know after you use it. it's a beauty.

    matching page file to ram

384 will be plenty. more than plenty. You see, windows will set 150% the ram as swapfile, but it does it blindly. I got 768 and the swapfile was over a gig. Rediculous. If all you do is gaming and internet, and dont run tons of programs at once, then you'd be good witjh 512 ram and 200-250 swapfile, but 384 certainly wont b a problem.
  7. Well, it is a big issue for ANYONE that will use this feature. It's broken and never should have been implemented. if a feature "Doen't work" as this one does, it should not be an option until its fixed.
  8. Bingo, that's exactly it. I can't believe they would make the mounted voume feature so %$#@&$ WEAK. Strange after reading tha article, it says the mounted drive cant recognise the recycle bin, but I can delete files just fine, and they goto the recycle bin. From 200 to XP and this issue is not resolved. Weak, very weak. At least I have a workaround. i searched MS knowledge base and could not find anything.
  9. Not encrypted. And for the record, this is not a shared folder, its a mounted volume. i am at the local machine and tyring to delete the folder. The reason i set it up is,, f: is full. F:\Games is where my games need to be. F:\Games is a 60 gig mounted volume, and F: is an 80 gig. Anyhoo, i gave my local acocunt full control explicitly. Didn't work. It's the strangest thing I've ever seen, not being able to delete ANY folder...........

    CD clone alternative?

Alcohol 120% is excellent, and has a great CD emulation built in, so you can rip and image and use it right off hard disk. I know clone has this feature too, but you are looking for alternative and I've no idea if the other ones mentioned here support this.
  11. As long as it is a DMA 100 drive, and you got 80 conductor ribbon, it will be autodetected. To see the current mode however, maybe sisoft sandra will tell you what mode its currently in.
  12. i hope it works on 2000 pro. I was rather annoyed to discover that Win2k pro and xp cant mirror. I still recommend a ghost, in case the OS installation goes, not a hardware failure.

    W2K-SP4: What is the verdict?

moo.dll in mirc, for reporting boxstats, crashes mirc when i run it with Sp4. ghost back to sp3 and it works fine.

  15. Also of note, i can delete files without issues, just the folders.
  16. i DON'T WANT IT ON C: BECAUSE i GHOST MY C: OFTEN, and besides, I want any settings and temporary data go on another drive, just havent found a way for this one thing yet.

  18. If you check out my Uber taskbar pic, youll see that it is possible. you just drag the little up and down line thingy beside the 3 showing quicklaunchers, and drag it as far as you want. The pic is here http://www.geocities.com/duhmez/taskbar.html

Move Windows XP to new hardware?

Curley_boy, you can easily update the contents of \repair directory. Run NTbackup, and choose to make an emergency repair disk. Then check the option to "backup registry" This updates it to current. Also if you run "Backup system state" in backup, it wil also save a backup which can be aplied to a fresh windows install to make it the same as it was. your biggest issue will be the mass storage controller. If its similar ebough itll be fine, if totaly different it won't work.

Is there a Free Exact Duplicate CD Cloning Program?

They can coexist just fine as long as you shut down directcd in msconfig last time I checked. Kinda sux if you like direct cd cause nero is excellent program. Have you thought of trying nero's "inCD" its neros answer to direct CD, same functionality.
