You can use whatever FQDN you want, if the isp has an external dns entry for your server, it will still be vlid for external clients, and you can simultaneously use your internal dns for your internal needs, with whatever name you wish.

Something went weird after NTFS format
duhmez replied to shearerc's topic in Everything New Technology
the MFT can be 8% or more of the total space 50 MB is nothing. dont worry about it. The zero byte thing is no theory either, for giggles i made a 100 MB ntfs prtition and filled it up that way. it as fun. One lousy command line can make the billions of 0 byte size files............. -
Changing system drive from f: to C: please help.
duhmez replied to tpe's topic in Everything New Technology
Easy fix. Boot from a win98/ME boot disk. then fdisk/mbr The windows will rebuild the drive letters as they should be. you can get a windows boot disk from http://drd.dyndns.org -
Put the sticks in the same colored slots, red and red, blue on blue etc. typically it will be one slot, then slot empty, then another slot.

Sounds like you have autorun disabled. here is how to work around this. When it asks for disk 2, open my computer and eject the cd. NOW, press F5 untill the empty cd rom drive shows that it is empty. then put in disk 2. Repeat this process until finished.

NT 4 does not support a safe mode. And LAst knon good should have worked if it was a mere configuration. Even more still, VGA mode that you loaded HAS to work, it is 60 hz and 640x480. thats what it is. If you are 100% sure "VGA mode" did not work, then replace the video card.

tcpsvcs.exe is at 99% cpu usage. NT 4 server sp6a
duhmez replied to duhmez's topic in Everything New Technology
For giggles i reinstalled SP6a and all windows updates. Then TCPSVCS crashed every time, and ipconfig would no longer function. Although internet still works..... Turns out it was services for Macintosh. I nuked them and all is well. Guess I'll just use the G4 to serve up the mac files........ -

Domains without 'www' preceeding them don't work??
duhmez replied to mak-uk's topic in Everything New Technology
mucking with IIS on your box will have no effect on your ability go go on the net and access hotmail...... The 500 error is Hotmail's server saying "No soup for you" Nothing you can do about that. Looks like the hotmail.com is reserved for admin purposes, and the www is needed to indicate you actually want hotmail. A for not typing www, normally IE will add the www and try that too, but your is not for some reason. Probably because of what DS3circuit said, cause you are uing your own DNS server I presume. -
Simple fix. press spacebar now to "invoke last known good configuration" This is the best option whenyou muck up you video in NT 4.

I erased a tape here and did a test backup, which worked fine. (media created today june 16 2003) Then I stick in a new tape and removable storage reports this new tape created last week. (Jun 09 2003) (Daily backup for that day) I want to then test restore from that day. When I run backup however, it still shows the Jun 16 index, and when I try to access it it says "insert the jun 16 2003 tape) because of course this tape does not match. I have tried everything to refresh the directory of this tape to no avail. Removable storage reports the tape correctly too, "media created Jun 09 2003) but Backup still just sees the tape I made today. unless I figure this out I don't hav a reliable backup which is bad times. (I do an xcopy backup scheduled to another hard drive in this machine as well, but if the pc catches fire I will lose it all unless I get this tape situation figured out.its an onstream SC 50 50 gig scsi tape drive. Any ideas? Is there something smple I am missing here?

Logon locally rights doesnt sound right to me for web access on domain contorllers. If this is true then IIS web access will be denied for all users on domain controllers by default, which I don't believe is the default. Correct me if I'm wrong.........

There wont be driver conflicts bcasuse you install the proper drivers after the swap. Where, pray tell, do these mysterious coniflicts come from if the drivers are updated?

Stop a device through a batch program
duhmez replied to Jamesgf's topic in Everything New Technology
Or you could disable the device in comntrol panel>devices Or is it control panel>hardware? Either way you get the idea. -
Methinks this is the reason. Probably when XP imports the foreign image, itwill convert it to NTFS 5. NT 4 does notlike ntfs 5 with regards to chkdsk, and possibly other things. This forces the user to make the determination whether to import it or not.
-
There is another options, if c: is NTFS. Delete the 12 gig partiiton. Then right click the drive in disk management and convert it to a dynamic disk. Then unallocated space>extend volume. You can then extend the c: volume to the full capacity without using partition magic. The upside to partition magic is it does not require the disk to be dynamic. Dynamic disks can be annoying at times. For example, my Ghost 2002 software does not seem to support dynamic disks.

Can someone tell me how to Import Xp games to 2003 server
duhmez replied to nightrampage's topic in Games
Copy the exe over. If it complains thatits missing a dll, then copy over the dll into the same directory as hearts. Repeat this procedure until it works. Do not put the dll's into \winnt\system32 -
I am going to digress here. Swapping mobos is fine as long as you have a compatible HD controller. The easiest wayis to use an IDE add on card(or scsi) this way windows automatically has the driver loaded and will boot fine. Just mak sure the add on card is installed ad working in the old machine before you power off and swap. In fact, Microsoft fully supports a motherboard swapover as long as the IDE controlle is the same. Windows has no problem reallocating the resources for yur motherboard components and PCI cards. Then you simply install the mobo chipset drivers and you are good to go. The normal advice to "reinstal fresh" is typically based on the fact that the IDE controller does not match, and windows actually wont boot. So grab a pci IDE controller(Ive got 2 promise controller, they work great for motherboard swapping) and swap away. I will reemphasize; Microsoft fully supports swapping a mobo as long as the HD controler is the same. Too, I have done it without incident.

beginner needs help with dual booting!
duhmez replied to kycolonel42276's topic in Everything New Technology
Boot win98 floppy with cdrom support, if c: is Fat32. then Ren c:\winnt winold Ren progra~1 progold Ren docume~1 docold E:\win98\setup.exe This will work if c: is fat32, and your machine has 1 drive with one partiiton. Otherwise you will need to a) Nuke it using fdisk, or Partiiton magic to convert c: to fat32 and resize c: to make room for d:
