Can't convert D drive to NTFS

Start>run>cmd convert d: /fs:ntfs then it will work, or if not you will at least be able to read the error message. Perhaps the error is "the drive is already NTFS" or something............
  3. I went to routing and remote access console and enabled the 2k server as a vpn server, and it works. I cant find in there though how to set exactly which users have access. Does it only allow user accounts that can "Log on locally" (Admns) ?? or is there somehting I am missing. Previously I have used 2k pro for vpn and it's done quite differently.
  4. I'd like nothing more than to migrate. the factor at the moment is cost. My 2000 standalone server only needs a few connections, the main pdc needs dozens. Public school budget is tight. the upgrade will happen, just not yet.

Microsoft Virtual Server Pre-Beta Customer Preview

This technology as they acquired it, does not allow for installatio of custom driver sets. The virtual machine has a specoific hardware configuration. For example, the video card is an emulated S3 Trio 64. Installing the drivers for you actual hardware wll not work. This is for application solutions and truly not for testing operation on actual hardware. The Virtual Machine does not interact with the Hal, it is purely software emulation. One interesting thing hat can be done with this however, is Riprep with a Ris server. Riprep does not require identical hardware. One could fully instal a mahcine and its software, then riprep it and deploy with a Ris server. The technology for installing multiple operating systems that all actual operate on the same physical hardware, is called hardware partitioning, and is a feature of windows 2000 Datacenter Server. I have been using Connectix Virtual PC since it was beta, and use it mostly for software/OS testing (linux, different server os'es etc) What will be really sad is if m$ only allows windows operating systems to be loaded into it.
  6. Indeed I am in a strange situation as ADUC does not exist with my configuation. I did however figure out how to asign VPN access based on group membership but not by specific username, and that is more than adequite for my needs.
  7. Have you tried the private newsgroup?
  8. Good links, thanks. I believe a little bit of my problem is the strange configuration I have. I have an NT 4 PDC and a win2k Standalone. As you know, the Win2k cannot be a BDC. It was strange because the remote ccess snapin was saying it required an active directory domain to get authorized, which i do not have at this site. When I tested the vpn wih the admin account, it did indeed conect and function properly. it was at this point I asked for how to setup user access because I did not want just any user to be able to connect. If only users with Log on locally rights can get on, then that is fine as it is for administration only.

running antivirus program under DOS level

If the parition is fat32 you can use Navdx (nav dos) from any norton. Download inteligent updater for the product, dos veriasonl then you can extract the updated definitions. then boot to win98 boot disk. you can also do this on ntfs is you use NTFSDOSPRO from www.sysinternals.com . They have a read only free triasl, should let you at least scan it and find if its infected, although it wont be able to repair unless you buy the full versiion. the other way (which is preferred) Stick the drive in another nt/2000/XP machine that has AV software running, and merely scan the disk. thats what i do with NTFS drives.

Switching over to NTFS from FAT32 running 2k

If you use ghost or ismilar to do the drive image, it will then be fat32, since the source is. If all you do is move data using epxlorer, then it wil rmain ntfs if you install onto ntfs. If you image the drive then use the convert command convert c: /fs:ntfs

    This is getting rediculous...

If I was looking to get a large removeable drive, and there were 2 on the shelf. One of them plays mp3's and one of them doesnt. Which is a better product?

    This is getting rediculous...

It's all about storage. justbecuase it can play mp3's doesnt mean you need to fill 60 gigs mp3's on it. Its also 60 gig of storage for any files. this is an excellent feature. If it could only hold mp3 files it would be rediculously large.

    iTunes music store

They need to offer a snalmail download option, whereyou can download a certain number on good faith tat you will pay. After a certain limit your downloads are suspended until payment clears, at whic point you can download again. This for people that don't have credit cards. The need to download now without a credit card is important because much of the music fans out there are young people, and they are trying to compete with "free" afterall.

    This is getting rediculous...

I have to suggest here to uncompress the drive. If you are filing it up with compressed media files, ntfs compression will be all but useless.

  17. I currently have no BDC but I do have a 2000 standalone. I ran dcpromo but it seems to only work if there is AD on the network. How can I make it a BDC emulator for my NT 4 domain? I want my SAm backed up, and I want logon fault tolerance, and I do not want to upgrade the NT 4 BDC yet....
  18. After scouring the web, I thought I may end up at this point. just wanted confirmation. Any way to make the 2k machine the new pdc emulator and dmeote my current nt4 to bdc? It seems whack that I can't make my shiny new 2000 server mix with my aging nt 4 box which probably would not usrvive the upgrade due to what we're running.

    Wireless mouse for gaming

If you go with a cheap cordless mouse, i still recommend Logitech, or more specifically, not microsoft. Microsoft's cordless optical mice only have 35 Hz refresh, and Logitech's cheap old ones have 50 hz refresh.

HELP! : Logitech USB Wireless Optical mouse

When you say in Linux, is it the same pc runing linux, or another pc running linux? If its another pc runing linux, then it may be the USB port not supplying enough juice for the mouse.

    Wireless mouse for gaming

Logitech MX 700. Best mouse on earth. here's the deal. Regular wireless mice get from 35 hz(m$ intellicrap wireless) refresh to 50 hz refresh(old logitechs). The logitech MX 700 broke this barrier. it gets 125 Hz refresh, same as USB mice. It is perfect. Gamers complaints about wireless being bad for games does not count for the MX 700. It has been a breakthrough that they get 125 Hz refresh on a wireless mouse. Rejoice al, and get yourself a logitech MX 700. It also comes with a recharging bay and battery pack builtin, so no replacing batteries. (the recharging bay is also the receiver)
