Moving Win2K Server Partition to new HDD.., Plz help...
duhmez replied to csl1010's topic in Everything New Technology
Make sure the machine has at least 128 MB ram, that should be enough to boot without a paging file. If the return to logon prompt problem persists, there is an easy fix. Boot from a win9x boot floppy/ Then fdisk/mbr Ths will work even on an ntfs drive and will not harm your data. -
Does NT4 have its own VPN software or do i need to buy addit
duhmez replied to headhurts's topic in Everything New Technology
Running nt4 sp6a with exchange 5.5. I installed PPTP driver, and it KILLED my machine. A good 12 hours to get it back running again. you have been warned. -
www.doom9.org has a free mpeg2 codec in the codecs download section. The problem with it thugh, is you cant fastforward, only play.

I have to clarify something here. NT 4 does not support booting from software raid 0(striping), and neither does 2000 or XP. Booting from a software mirror is always supported, but only windows servers support software mirroring, not workstations or pro. So it is not ridiculous, and no functionality with respect to this has been lost. It really annoys me that 200 pro and XP pro do not support disk mirroring, and only the servers do. With the cheapp prices of hard drives, it would be a great way to keep them workstations running.

Or buy a promise ultra 100 TX2, or promise ultra 133 TX 2 IDE controller.

Homeboy has got it right. Anywhere there would be a spcae, put %20 instead.

Go to the properties of the CD drive(s) in device manager. Under advanced settings enable "Digital audio extraction" Then you will be good to go.

Small, simple FTP server which supports Uploads' resume?
duhmez replied to ofelas's topic in Software
IIS 4 and 5 do not support resuming on downloads or uploads. Pretty sad if you ask me. And cheapo or freebie programs can do it. -
I got my shiny new Asus A7M 266-D motherboard with dual AMD 2600+ CPU. I see no options to bot from my promise controller. there is no "Boot other device" option. In the "other" all there is is network (int18h) or SCSI. I tried as scsi and it did not work. I tried setting everything to disabled and no work. How can I make the pc boot off the promise? I've booted off the promise before on my Abit, it has a "boot other divice" option that will sniff out all its buses and find a bootable parititon automatically. If I can't bot off it I will cry, as I will lose my current installation and have to reinstall fresh. If I can make the promise boot, ten I can keep my OS intact. Is it really possible that this shiny new motherbopard is INCAPABLE of booting from a third party IDE controller ?!?!

I can't boot from promise ultra100 tx2 controller. WHY??
duhmez replied to duhmez's topic in Hardware
The 2 IDE limit does not apply to these promise cards working, at least not for normal drive operation, I cant comment if it is causing the lack of boot. I am currently runnins the 2 promise cards and the onboard without problems. I did try all the options listed except removing drives off the primary, and removing all cards. If I was not in such a hurry to get my new machine up and running I would have, but alas I have since reinstalled fresh and am currently doing all my post install configurations. when it comes time for a new mobo in the future, I will try these options. (I like to never ever reinstall my OS, I just ghost it and keep it ging forever. NT + ghost makes for a m,achine that need never be reinstalled most of the time. I keep my c drive @ about 1.5 gigs data on 3 gig partiiton. This ghosts to 2 cd's and I install absolutely everything else onto other drives, tempfiles, email etc all on other drives. Thanks for the attempt at a solution here, but I have reinstalled and my old OS is deleted, and the machine is runing well still. Soon I'm gonna hit the benchmarks....... -
I can't boot from promise ultra100 tx2 controller. WHY??
duhmez replied to duhmez's topic in Hardware
It is not a raid card, just additional fast IDE controllers. (I have ultra100 TX2 and ultra 133tx2 installed inthe machine) There is no options to configure it in the bios as it is not part of the motherboard, unlike the HPT 370. On my old mobo I was booting off the promise by choosing "none" as all the boot devices, and enabling "boot other device" which will sniff all the buses and find a bootable drive automatically. (I did not choose scsi even though I believe this would have worked, it's just easier to set "boot other device enable" This is an excellent feature that I really enjoyed with my abit. (It's a VP6 BTW) Then I just go tmy new dual board in (Finally) Installed all hardware without a hitch. I knew that I could just boot off the promie as normal and plug and play would configure the new mobo and I would not need to reinstall. ("W00T" I was thinking, glad to have the Ultra 100), makes for a way easier migration of motherboards for NT based os. Then the hell began. No "Boot other device" option like the abit had, so I figured, no problem, I'll just set it to scsi and all will be well. It just doesn't work. Can't boot off and retain my OS on the onboard because the AMD ide controller drivers obviously were not installed. I even tried putitn the HD back in the old machine, upgrading the via IDE drivers to the IDE (These rivers were not written, are you SURE you want to upgrade" I say yes) Then I copy AMDEIDE.SYS into my system directory and power down. Hoping the new AMD driers will be installed as my primary IDE and hoping it will boot off it when I put the HD back in the new machine. (This was especially difficult because the stupid AMD reference driver for the IDE is a %^%#^ 8 MB .exe installer, with no option to extract the files off it that I needed. I had to install a temp win2k on another oparittion then instal the AMD IDE driver so I could get at the files (Which were ~350K) So no option I choose will allow booting from my Promise card. So I give uo and reinstall windows, configure a bunch of drivers and settings, install a bunch of crap, change admin password and create new admin acocunt. I logon as the new admin acocunt and configure a few more things. Then I reboot. Now the system will not accept my password for the new admin account or the builtin admin account. I figure SAM got corrupted. Dunno how. So I boot into dos with my snazzy Dos dual boot (bootgui=0 I learned from APK way back) and replace all the files from %windir%\repair to my system32. This got me back going but losing all the configuration changes I had made (bout 2 hours worth.) I hjave the second to newest mobo bios too nad the newest suports fatser cpu's, nothing mentioned about supporting IDE booting from third party controllers. I checked all over the internet to see if otherws wioth this mobo are having problems booting from third party IDE card and it seems most just install and boot from the default. So where I am at is im booting off the onboard and I did a fresh instal of windows; million softwares, patches, Games to reinstall. (I have 300 Gig in this pc and tons and tons of software and games were setup tweaked, and installed. Other than that, the hardware has been working well. -
humojr me, and burn it slower anyways. try 4x then try 8x. When CD's burn, they have errors. it happens always. Data cd's use crc correction which is burned onto the disk to ensure a reliably read. CD audio has no such crc checking, and lsower burning means less errors. the same is especially true for VCD and SVCD. They rely on the mpeg error correction rather than CD crc correction, which yields an extra 100 MB disk space. (thats right, data cd's use 100 MB for crc error correction, and cd audio uses none) the same goes for ripping. Im not kidding, rip them slow.......

I have 512 meg PC2100 DDR. What should I set my swapfile to?
duhmez replied to pr-man's topic in Software
windows 2000/XP will set it to 1.5x the ram, but this is a very bad way to do it. The amount of swapfile needs is based on the amount of ram. For example, if you have 1 gig of ram, you don't need a swap[file at all. but winodws would still set it at 1.5 gigs. 1.5 gigs of swapfile is lunacy. 768 swapfile with 512 is also lunacy. basically, the less ram you have the more swapfile you will need. For 512 MB ram I would recommend 250-300 megs for the average user. if you use heavy amounts of compressing video and newshgroup binary downloads, then youll need 512 tops. -
www.doom9.org , the greatest resource ont he net for ripping and encoding dvd's, with www.vcdhelp.com a close second. Chekc out the program DVD2SVCD too you may enjoy making SVCD instead. Check out "Gordion knot" if you are interested in encoding to mpeg 4/Divx/ XVID.

1) Load win9x. 2) download iesetup.exe 3) Run it, choose cusotmize 4)Choose advanced ro whatever, click the box to "Download only" there you can choose i5.5 sp2, ie6, etc, all full downloads. You cant do this on 2k or XP only on win95/98/ME.

try this: BURN SLOWER. buning slower can be very impotant for audio cd's, and vcd/svcd's. Believe me. I bet it will work then.

Have ou set the IDE channel as "DMA is available" In device manager?

XVid-Qix - Where can I get Qix? I think it's an Audio Codec
duhmez replied to Christianb's topic in Everything New Technology
AC3 audio is dolby digital. It can be stereo, 2.1, or 5.1. It is the format used on DVD's. They rip the movie ad leave the ac3 file intact for true unrecompressed audio listening experience. You can convert that ac3 to wav or mp3 if you wish using besweet. Goto doom9.org >Guides>Audio -
FYA, halflife/cstrike is Quake 2 engine.

Nice post. Good job. the only trouble about jsinc is theres sooo much stuff there to peruse, it's almost overwhelming.

A network bridge connects 2 dissimilar networks together, like from token ring to ethernet, or, more commmonly now, WIFI (Wireless) to a Cat 5(Wired) network. A repeater amplifies and resends what you've already got. A gateway connects dissimilar protocals (IPX > TCP/IP) etc. (This is different from an IP "Default Gateway.")

type this at the recovery console. copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\Windows\System32\ Then reboot.
