The link is working again, and it contains securestack. Quote: Supplier: SecureWave Platforms: Win NT: Win 2000: Description: How does SecureStack work? SecureStack offers protection from all buffer overflow attacks that try to inject and execute arbitrary code on your system. SecureStack flags data sections as non-executable, and it detects and prevents any attempt to run illegitimate code, thus making it impossible for attackers to gain control of your system. What is SecureStack? SecureStack consists of a kernel mode driver for Windows NT/2000 (Intel). The driver ensures that data stored in memory cannot be executed by smashing the stack and is application independent. This means that once Secure Stack is installed your system will be protected. Features: SecureStack provides protection for user mode applications (including services), but not for kernel mode drivers, SecureStack is independent of the server applications, SecureStack currently supports only uni-processor machines, SecureStack provides protection from remote buffer overflow attacks for Windows NT 4.0, and Windows 2000 with any existing and future service packs and for hardware platform with Intel Pentium, MMX, Certification: Price: Free versions URL: http://www.securewave.com/html/secure_stack.html -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- © Copyright Townsend & Taphouse, 1999-2003. One of my machines is a dual processor, and the other is an AMD dual processor. Leaves me out of it on both counts.

Workstation only upgrades to XP Pro as per the MS article here http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=292607

You asked if there as an ipconfig for win2k. yes there is. It's called ipconfig....... lol Did you mean a graphical ipconfig? If so, then Alecstaars is recommended (From the APK toolset). Prints it up in a nice window and also a snazzy button to copy the info to clipboard for easy pasting. Personally I am a commandline junkie and have no need for such a thing.

That's interesting, about chaning the password. what does this mean then? How can a user change his password safely???
-
I ave to spend gobs of extra time turing XP back into win2k. So no sale for me

CRacking the password is easy if you have the hard drive. Reset the admin password (no probleem i can do it in 2 seconds), then login and reset every other password using users and passwords applet. not that mS security options like this are bad in themselves, the problem is every cracker out there works to crack it. It would seem to me that using obscure third party tools would make anything that much more secure.

The program that runs these is called Virtual Drive.

Jumpman Zero! It's a remake of the old Commodore 64 game. www.jumpmanzero.com and it's free. I play it while I am doing my business on the can.

Download and install Free CDex. it's free and among the best.

Problem I see with windows native encryption, all someone has to do after stealing your HD, is crack the user account passwords, then they can read it all anyways. Tying encryption to user accounts a really weak security wise IMO. Unless there is somehting I am missing.... \

I second the vote for CDex. It's fantastic

I've got 6 NT 4 domains. None of them are trusted, but I can do that if need be. I'm wondering about the best method to do this, and if it could be done without third party tools. What I want to do is on a schedule, replicate files from one server to another, then fropm that to another etc. these servers are all at different locations, directly connected to the internet.

I will clear up the confusion. The laptop is win9x, but all the data is stored in his home directories on the servers. His data is not stored on the laptop. -

Laptop in Win9x. what I'm llooking into now is setting up a vpn, suing At to schedule Xcopies. I was looking at robocopy butt if a partial file transer fails, I would have corrupted data which would be lost and need to be backed up. -
Quote: Hmmmm, you could try using the boot sector from the NT4 CD....or using floppy emulation on the CD and then putting in the autoexec to run NT setup. Putting in the autoexec to run nt setup will boot and run nt setup every boot no matter what. Might I suggest a network distribution point, from dos? I can help you with a dos network boot disk if needed.

Looking to replicate mostly office documents. It's for one user, the boss, who travels from site to site and always wants the most current files available. He plugs in the laptop, logs onto the local domain, and wants his file in \\server\users. (Which is always mapped as U:\ in our organisation. -
I just got the email from connectix. What are your thoughts? I am highly suspicious of their motives.

If you do install a windows machine for them to send their backup data nightly, be aware that if you use 2k pro or xp pro the most connections you can get is 10 at a time, which will be a pain. And server will cost alot of money. If you gonthis route using 2k pro or xp pro to send backups, I'd use task schedular to xcopy all the data from 8 of the machines, then, a while later the other 8 machines will kick in, all into their own nackup directores on the dedicated backup workstation directories. Ths owuld be a very inexpensive options.

When Homeboy Dosfreak says something is worth checking out, then it's worth checking out.

What does open source have to do with Connectix virtual PC?

When i type a bad url in like www.gogle.com, I don't want msn to search it for me, I don't want it to replace the url withj res:///blahblah I want it to just say page not found, then I can add the extra 'o or something. Is there a way???

I second that. just install the scsi drivers first and all willl be well.. I used this method to switch motherbpoards from 440bx intel to a via board on windows 2000. I extracted the 4 in 1's, installed the via ade dirvers (Even though they did not exist on the intel motherboard) shut down, and swapped mobo'. The machine booted and found all hardware and was well.

I've got the best mouse. I'm not kidding, read the reviews for it. Logitech MX 700. 125 Hz refresh, cordless and optical. 8 buttons. 125 Hz refresh. They broke the refresh barrier with cordless and optical.

try setting a static IP within the range of the router, like 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 Make sure it matches the routers subnet mask too. then in the dns box enter the routers internal IP adress and the smae ip in the gateway box. this should work fine. i dunno why it is doing what it's doing, but it will be fine. if the router's ip adress for some reason won't work as a dns server, then enter your isp's dns servers.

All I can add is the 9500 pro is fine with the tv wonder. All the tv wonder needs is a video card with overlay. Install the ati control panel if you haven't. Goto display properties/advanced/troubleshooting Make sure the slider is at full acceleration. Also go to the overlay tab and make sure it is enabled, and for giggles, click to enable "Theatre mode" (This allows media to be displayed on a tv when you use TV out) then reinstall the tv wonder driver from ati.com and then the MMC.
