SVCHOST.exe --- Resources Gone... Please Help
duhmez replied to Ramus111's topic in Everything New Technology
Have you got a realtek RTL 8139 network adapter? If so replace it (or borrow a replacement for testing purposes.) This can be the culprit! -
This is critical, and if you don't you will get hacked into next week!! Use netbeui for netbios on your lan, (ON XP it's on the cd in the valueadd folder), or disable netbios over TCP/IP on your internet connected nic and leave it enabled on your lan nic. To do this: Rioght click your internet conected conection, goto advanced TCP/IP properties, then click the wins tab. Click the box "Disable netbios over TCP/IP. Nothing over the internet has any reason to have netbios access over TCP/IP so nothing will break on you. Cheers!

Lan adapters default to netbios enabled, dialup connections default to netbios disabled. -
Have 2000 or Xp and internet? Disable Netbios over TCP/IP!
duhmez replied to duhmez's topic in Security
It was an expression. Not that anyone will get hacked "Next week" but , "Get hacked into next week" I posted it because after perusing the security forum I did not happen to notice it anywhere, and thought I would add my 2 cents is all. Cheers -
2 pass Xvid quality is incredible. Although so is divx 5.02 pro, 2 pass with Qpel and B frames. There major problem with xvid is, iot is under heavy development all the time, (Which is good), but that means experimental development builds are constantly available, which often leads to major, major bugs ion the encoded video. You must search high and low and find builds that are not "Broken" as many are broken. You need to look for "Trusted" builds, not just "The latest" builds.

Drivers for MIRO DC10 for Windows 2000
duhmez replied to handsm's topic in Everything New Technology
I too, have been searching. I found a driver that says has windows 2000 support, but it cannot cvaptue in premier or virtualdub, yet the driver appears to be funcitoning in device manager.I think it wants pinnacle installed too, which I do not have handy. Try this link here, I have not tried it yet as I am at work now. http://www2.driverguide.com/uploads/uploads16/25486.html An Xp driver, maybe work on windows 2000. It says he has instructions in it to get it working without pinnacle too but is untested. Also try these links http://www2.driverguide.com/uploads/uploads12/20248.html http://members.bellatlantic.net/~eisler1/ (This next one needs winace to unzip) http://www2.driverguide.com/uploads/uploads16/20501.html If you get any method to work, please post back with exactly how you did it. i got this capture card for free and would really like to be able to use it. -

Win2k Pro and build-in FTP server licensing.
duhmez replied to Igor's topic in Everything New Technology
According to the windows 2000 license, this also applies to any third party web or ftp server you install on it, such as apache, oe serv-U, etc. -

1) Right click My computer>properties>advanced>startup and recovery. 2) Uncheck "Automatically reboot" 3) Then when it happens again read what the screen says when it crashes (It wont reboot automatically anymore) and report back.

The vendor who sold the oem product without a pc was the one in breach. As an oem, they sign the dotted line saying they will not do this. I believe an end user can sell it, just as if they sold their whole pc that it came on, which is obviously OK.

you wont have to reactivate for just a hard drive. Xp activation is supposed to kick in when 6 hardware devices change, or, 4 devices if one is a nic. (They love them mac addresses.)

You can install it on a 98 box if you have the software from HP. I've done it with many machines. Unlike NT/XP which allows you to add the TCP/IP port directly Win9X/ME needs specific software installed.

For the purpose of this conversation, I would suggest not clumping "Hackers and virus authors/releasers" in the same category. Personally, I scour the net for hacking tools, and hack my own machines. Don't touch viruses.

Any good recent articles comparing win2k versus winxp?
duhmez replied to pr-man's topic in Everything New Technology
1) When you have 2 rows of tasks on xp taskbar, and you minimise a task, it defaults t row 2 always. This is very annoying. (I run manymany windows and tasks at once) 2) XP has too many fuity popups and wizards and the stupid search dog and bloatware. 2k is a teeny bit better imo. I've been using 2k since rc1. -
Can someone PLEASE shed some light onto this problem
duhmez replied to Chicken_Nibblet's topic in Everything New Technology
Personally, I refuse to read posts that want help o "A problem" Please put in the topic at least a hint of what the problem involves, like "Unreal Tournament problem...." -
Scouring the net for answers, of any I have not found. I have a mixed mode domain, 2 NT 4 bdc's, 1 win2k domain controller running in pdc emulation mode< and a wink standalone. I have tried running the dhcp server on all of these servers at any given time, and also 2 at a time in other tests. I authorize the dhcp servr (PDC local machine) and no addresses will be handed out. For a test I installed ICS on a win98 workstation in the domain, and it succssfully hands out addresses to clients without a hitch. My switches are all working normally. Is there something I am missing, or a problem I do not know about yet? Currently I am usin autoassigned 169.x addresses to workaround.

How can I see the currently connected users on my win2k serv
duhmez replied to duhmez's topic in Networking
Thank you veyr much works like a charm. Bumpskeez to the top. Being an MCSE on nt 4, im sure a few more things will popup. -
I have highpoint 370 controller, and it runs all hard drives fine. the manual does say though not to use CD roms on it, im not sure why this is. You can use your hard drives no problem on it. if you want to boot from cd rom and install windows on the raid controller, you just have to press F6 while seup is launching and have the driver floppy handy (foolish microsoft, wanting to phase out floppy disks and setup REQUIRES a floppy disk for scsi drivers.

soundblaster.com has it for download now again. The whole package is about 50 megs. Youll need to wait in quque though like fileplanet.
