last time I tried to use zonealarm, it REQUIRED you to install a special ICS client on all client machines, otherwise the ICS would not work. This was about 1 year or so ago, I don't know if this has ever changed. Check the FAQ's at zonealarm website see if this still needs to be done.

connecting to home net from outside
duhmez replied to Radioactive Frog's topic in Everything New Technology
You will indeed be able to acess the nwtwork from afar, however for security issues you should do a couple things. you should disable netbios over tcpip for the internet adapter. Goto advanced tcpip properties, then under the wins tab click "disable netbos over tcpip" Then you should use winvnc or ftp( www.jgaa.com for WarFTPD, great free ftp app) or other such software for conecting. Windows sharing is too dangerous to use over the net. -
Getting Files/Directory listings of websites?
duhmez replied to Arin's topic in Everything New Technology
No you can't, not wihtout hax0ring the server. The server will have directory listing turned off most of the time. Call the web admin up and ask him to turn on directory listing for you. Even then, if the path has a default document, you still won't get the listing. -
DOS application causing max processor problems under W2K
duhmez replied to Robc2000's topic in Software
Compatibility mode is only for windows environments. If the dos app does this all I can suggest is a virtual PC solution. Either VMware or Virtual PC(Formerly connectix, now owned by microsoft) Virtual PC runs great i've been using it since the early betas. www.connectix.com will get you to it. ($199.00 last time I checked) Another quicker, and FREE way to try is DOSBOX. Beware, one is free and open source, anothe rprogram called dosbox is shareware. Try the free one first. -
How to extract a file from W2K CD?
duhmez replied to hardwarecrazy's topic in Everything New Technology
.zip is bad times! I tried to zip up a couple gigs, and it's too big for the format. not to mention no spanne file support. Been using winrar for years now and Love it. I do however has a VERY CLOSE eye on 7-zip. In it's current form i don't care for the interface, but I'm sure that soon it willl get much better. -
Making XP machine a LAN domain server
duhmez replied to nandanv's topic in Everything New Technology
Not sure exactly what you are trying to do. Are you tyring to have one logon for all access, or are youjust trying to use DNS for name resolution? -
I've been using Win2k since RC2. I tried XP for a bit but the added crap justpisses me off and I have to spend alot of time disabling the crap I don't wanna use anyways. (Like the search dog for instance... I thought this was a PRO OS.... Pro's don't need stupid search dogs asking me what I want to do.) If you do not have either then buy XP from tyhe getgo. It wil be supported longer, and is just as good, really. As for why someone would dual bot 2k and xp, to edit video in XP, confuses me greatly. 2K and XP can run the same video editing apps just as well, all I use is 2k and I do it all the time.........

I run mine flawlessly in a virtual PC. (www.connectix.com) Not a cheap program but I can play Magic in it (Windows 98 in the VPC) and it runs flawlessly. PM me if you need me to hook you up with the VERY MUCH NEEDED game patches which may n not be available through thew web anymore.

OK Mr. Smarty pants. Pseudo random will be fine. Trying to sound Uber l33t saying computers can't do real random........ Uggg Now who's the fool.

What I am tring to do is, give all the files in a folder I specify a randomfilename.MPG this way they will all be out of order instead of alphabetical.

#1 issue, deltree /Y still prompts when run from a batch. Irritating indeed. This is what I have for the final portion of my logon scripts. :nukemsn if exist "c:\program files\msn messenger\msnmsgr.exe" goto renmsn exit :renmsn ren "c:\program files\msn messenger\msnmsgr.exe" msnmsgr.ex_ ren "c:\program files\msn messenger\msmsgs.exe" msmsgs.ex_ Now the issue. If they reinstall msn, then msnmsgr.exe will exist, and it will be unable to rename to msmsgs.ex_ because the filanem will be taken. So my Q: Is there a way in a batch to delete without prompt (/Y does not work) or, to rename msmsgs.exe to a random filename generated. Like rename to a random txt stroing of 6 characters or so. Or, a better suggestion to deal with this. This is an NT 4 domain (And it is not going to be 2k/2k3 anytime soon) and Win98SE clients. Also if they install it while logged on and use it, that is OK, I just want it to go away every logon so it will be too much hassle for them to keep reinstalling. (Plus this will be very good for giggles when their msn keeps disappearing.) TIA for input. A .vbs script could also be an options too, but I'm unfamiliar with the syntax for vbs, advice on this would be apreciated too. If a vbs file then all I need to do is nuke msn, and map drives. (\\net use x: \\server\share) No group policy, no NTFS, plain old-school hackaway style.

Need advice for logon script win98 clients
duhmez replied to duhmez's topic in Everything New Technology
Well now feel kind of dumb now. Del does not prompt, so problem solved. I just del msnmsgr.exe I assumed del wanted a prompt, so I pulled up deltree /? and it said /Y Skip delete prompt. I tried /Y with deltree and it doesnt work when run from a batch (lame) Del works spiffy. The only reason I was renaming was because of the lack of no prompt deleting. Sw3etx0r. -
You do know burning these dat files, they wont run on a DVD player right? Here's a tip, if the dat files are vcd, you can use SVCD2DVD to make dvd complaint files, or a working VIDEO_TS FOLDER FOR PLAYBACK ON DVD PLAYERS. www.SVCD2DVD.COM Exellent program. It does not reencode the video file so no quality is lost, it merely resamples the audio portion to 48000 Hz which is required to fit DVD spec.

settign permissions for network shares without a domain
duhmez replied to jimbo_canada's topic in Everything New Technology
Here is what I recommend. use everyone full control for all for your shares. then use NTFS permisions to regulate access. if youa re on XP home, you can't do this by default, but a neat trick is boot into safe mode. there you have your full NTFS rights management! -
Virtualdubmod. www.doom9.org has it.

$29 per station for winzip is too much, and for basic zipping/unzipping I don't want to pay for all the machines.

A/V sync in an avi file is bad news. It is almost impossible to fix, unless the sync is at a set rate. What I mean is, if it starts in sync, then goes more and more out of sync, forget about it you will never win. if it's out a certain amount, and is always the same amount out, then it is a really easy fix using virtualdub. (Video>change framerate so audio and video durations match) then video>direct stream copy. then save the new avi. If this doesnt work click audio>Interleaving and look for adding a + or - audio delay to match it up. trial and error.

this is what sounds like happened. you could not delete avi files before, so you did a reg tweak so you could delete them. IFSHLP.exe is the culprit and is disabled using this tweak. IFSHLP.exe normally is what gives you thr propertis of the file, but some ahve the glitch of not being able to delete avi files, the fix basically disabesd ifshlp. Download viortualdub www.virtualdub.org load the avi file then go to file>file information. this will give you all the info yo need.
