Hi, Hope this is posted in the right place. I have posted this issue on a couple different boards but so far have not found anyone with a solution. I only found a couple other people having the same problem. Here goes: I cannot load some pages and it seems to be mostly microsoft pages. It started with my sons' computer. www.MSN.com web page will load but the button in the upper right hand corner of the page for "Sign In" to hotmail or passport is missing and only a red x is present with some text dicribing the link. He uses MSN messenger and hotmail. If you click on the link to sign it it just hangs and won't open the page We get the standard error page that starts with: The page cannot be displayed The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings. but its not. I have done everything to fix this problem including spybot, ad-aware, virus scan, highjackthis, turn off all firewalls, clean cookies, delete files, load and try FireFox, then did a full reload of XP SP2!!!! Still doen't work. Other pages that won't open are http://www.ebay.com, http://support.microsoft.com/, http://messenger.msn.com/ I have a home network and his computer is a client. The gateway can open all of these websites with no problems. Since my son couldn't get into messenger he moved over to my computer which is another client when I am at work . I was also able to open those pages with no issues but after he started using mine for a few days it won't load the pages either!! Gateway still has no problems. The gateway is running PC-cillin Internet Security which has real time scanning and a firewall. It is not running the XP firewall. I think that these computers are adding the sites to an untrusted site list somewhere and denying access to them but I can't find where. I have tried disabling the firewalls. What else can block access? This problem is relativly new and all machines have XP pro SP2 full installs with a slipstreamed install disk, not updates. My PC was up and running with the full install for atleast 2 months with no problems?? Please help

This must be the case. I will do as it says in the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 305098 because it states: Important Although support for 48-bit LBA is included in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3) and later, it is still necessary to create the registry change that is described in the "Resolution" section of this article. That resolution is: The following conditions are necessary for the correct functioning of 48-bit LBA ATAPI support: A computer with a 48-bit LBA-compatible Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) installed. A computer with a hard disk that has a capacity of greater than 137 gigabytes (GB). You must enable the support in the Windows registry by adding or changing the EnableBigLba registry value to 1 in the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Parameters To enable 48-bit LBA large-disk support in the registry: 1 Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe). 2 Locate and then click the following key in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Atapi\Parameters 3 On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value: Value name: EnableBigLba Data type: REG_DWORD Value data: 0x1 4 Quit Registry Editor.

That sounds like it will do the trick but the MS hack says its for sp2 or earlier. I'm running sp4 but that shouldn't make any dif. By the way I have 2 promise ata 100 cards installed and this drive is on one of them. DAD

What is the drive size limitation in windows 2000 pro? I just installed a maxtor 160gb HD in my file server and it only shows 130gb. Is this a limitation of the operating system or the motherboard? The motherboard is an old epox dual slot 1 with a single plll. I am not able to install windows xp on this system (tried several times) so I know it has some limits. Thanks, DAD

well, I thought I should let you know that I got it working, but ended up doing a complete reinstall. Re-formated the hard drive and installed xp on the client and it works Thanks for your help davros, we tried everything but something must have been wrong with the os. Thanks again.

Quote: If it still won't connect, go back to the Connections tab by clicking Tools->Internet Options. Click LAN settings. Everything should be unchecked there. If automatically detect proxy settings is unchecked, then check it and click ok. If it is checked then uncheck it and click ok. Change it to the opposite of whatever it is. I have tried this several times. I tried to go to Yahoo, since I was able to bing to it but it was unsuccessful. Should I try to reload IE6 again?

Up[censored] the clock was also successful. This is what I have done with the IE settings: ran the internet connection wizard. I even unloaded IE from "remove windows components" Reinstalled it. Still no connection. I even tried opera but I could not find a setting in it to connect through a LAN.

I was able to ping yahoo from the client. I will now try to install a 33.6k modem to see if I can get it configured. I'll let you know what happens.

I am about to give up as well!!!! The sad part is that this worked at one time. Occasionally I will get a problem with the hub. The network will just stop working. I then have to unplug the hub for awhile or move the cable connectors to a different port in the hub and it starts working again. I don't think this has anything to do with the hub, do you? Now, reminding you from earlier post, all the wiring in this house is brand new. I wired it myself. Does the network use all 8 of the wires in the cat 5e wire? Or, does the network communication take place on some of the wires, and the internet communication on others? Do you see where I'm going with this? Is it possible that one of the wires is not getting a good connection? The male and female plugs are designed to merely pierce the wires insulation which I found to be simplistic and possibly prone to error. Do you think this direction of troubleshooting has merit?

The message goes on to say: The device is not currently installed in the computer but if it is reinstalled at a later time there may be a conflict. It probably has to do with when I moved the nic card from one PCI slot to another. The message asks if I want to assign a different address to the current device? I click on no. (this leaves ip address at 198-162-0-1
-
What else can it be? I even deleted all the cookies, and internet files from the client to assure they're not causing the problem. The network between the two pc's works great. Real fast comunications, files anf programs are shared. But can't connect to the internet from the client. The only problem is when I run the wizard and it sets the ip addresses to 198-162-0-1, it comes up with a message something like this: The ip address is assigned to another network device.

I have a 40gb hard drive that I regretfully partitioned the following way. C: boot partition – 3.4gb D: system partition – 3.4gb E: 3.4 F: 10gb G: 10gb H: 8+gb It was initially a dual boot system with 98 on C: and 2000pro on D:. Since upgrading 2000pro to XPpro I see no use for 98. So here are my problems: 1. The D: is always giving message that it is too full. I share this PC with other family members and each of our Documents and Setting files are stored on the D: drive. I cannot find any way of moving them to one of the other partitions short of dragging them. Will this work? Is there another way? 2. What is the best way to unload 98? 3. My G: partition is empty. Is there a way to move it’s 10gb to the D: drive partition? From other threads I’ve read, it is obvious that I should be using NTFS instead of FAT32 for limiting access to files that I don’t want others to view or alter. It sounds like I would have more control over the partitions then as well. __________________

I guess I'm not following you You are saying to reboot the host, stop the modem while it's trying to connect, restart the connection, then try the client?
-
Well, that almost worked. The modem connection has shared next to the connected, but still not connecting from the client Any more ideas?

no firewalls. still no connection!
