How many processes do you have running?
jmmijo replied to Lotus's topic in Everything New Technology
all of them Sorry I had to add my $0.011905 worth of non-sense... -
This could actually be more then just a bad on-board graphics adapter. Try this to verify things: 1) Unplug the power cord and then carefully remove the chassis cover. 2) Carefully remove *all* RAM/DIMM memory modules from the motherboard. 3) Plug the power cord back in and power on the machine. Now then, do you get a POST beep error message, should be a single long beep denoting no memory found or couldn't initialize memory. If you don't get any POST beep error messages, then most likely you have something else wrong with the machine and it most likely isn't the on-board graphics adapter.

Well not really because AMD has been doing this for years now, basically designing more efficient CPU's that do more work per clock cycle and hence do not really need to be clocked faster to get things done Intel finally seems to have gotten that same message with their Core 2 Duo CPU's so this doesn't surprise me how they've come up with some pretty good new designs. Now with the advent of multi-core CPU's coming down the pipe, including some news about QUAD core silicon, this should be good news for those that are heavy into multi-threaded apps like 3D Rendering and the like

My question would be why are you attempting to use a consumer/home OS for this kind of job in a business setting ?!? To save a couple hundred instead of using a server OS solution ?!? I don't know if XP Pro would allow anymore concurrent connections but my feeling is no, it would be hardcoded to the same limitation....

Vista RC2 on DFI NF4 / SATA RAID0 Dual Boot?
jmmijo replied to MrJeebs's topic in Everything New Technology
I wish I could say I've actually tried installing Vista onto a RAID array, but alas no. I've had no troubles installing the releases onto a comparable system sans the RAID Array without any hiccups other then the graphics card drivers. I've even installed Vista onto a second box without any issues, again the only hiccups is the graphics card drivers. -
Once you purchase a genuine copy, you cam reactivate your's with the genuine CD key that comes with that copy you just purchased. After doing so then all will work as normaly without the annoying WGA message

If you review the MB manual, you will see that each PCI slot is assigned a specific IRQ depending on what that slot number happens to be. Of course this means that it will share IRQ resources with whichever onboard device happens to use the same IRQ as well. It does look like everything is working just fine for you and you have done all the testing that one can do to verify the devices are sharing the IRQ's properly I would conclude you should not have any issues from this point forward using everything as you want to...
-
My suggestion would be to disable both onboard serial/com ports as most likely you are not using either one. I would also disable the onboard lpt/printer port if you printer is the USB type. This will free up some system resources as well, like IRQ's for instance. As to why the Root Hubs require their own IRQ's, simple, most every expansion card requires an IRQ for proper synchronization to the system bus, be it PCI/AGP/PCIe. Since pretty much most of the devices support bus mastering, this will allow the devices to share IRQ's with other bus mastering cards. However, I've found some bus mastering devices like Soundblaster cards to be less the friendly when sharing their resources with other devices
-
I do believe things will be ok for the most part, however, it's knowing which port/usb root hub is sharing IRQ's with other devices, unless these are labeled you will have to test things out with an external USB device and say playing some games to generate a lot of graphics work to see if this sharing is going to cause any issues.

The EDB stands for Extended Data Bus and generally speaking the drivers supplied with the interface card should normally be used, however, you may want to try the standard SP4 drivers and see how well they work. It's very possible you could see no performance/campatibility difference between the two sets of drivers. Another thing you should do is to check Belkin's website for updated drivers for this model card, they most likely have newer ones then what was supplied on the drivers CD.

Philip, not sure there is anything you can do about this error, but I do see it quite often and only when I click on the Active Topics in the past 24 Hours. Quote: You cannot make another search at this time. Please try again in a few minutes. Please use your back button to return to the previous page. I mean, I am logged on so why is this happening ?!? I can see this for users not logged on to help control bots and such, but really, if I review a thread and then want to look at the past 24 hour topics again, it shouldn't do this. Please advise, thanks

OK, thanks for looking into this Philip

Just how FRESH a gas bag release do you think Vista will be come 2007 ?!? Hard to say myself if at all, however, I can see where Microsoft is trying to release a much more secure OS and they are trying things they have never done before, well like the WinFS they were hoping to deploy in this OS release. Only time will tell how successful they will be with this OS and here's to hoping that they can get much better driver support from the third party vendors because both nVidia and ATi seem to be having driver issues even in RC1.
-
I miss APK, anybody seen or heard from Alex recently ?!? I think I received a PM and/or email from him about 6~8 months ago and nothing since. Hell, I've seen ChristianB post more often now then APK does
-
I would use Vista more if ATi would release stable drivers for their cards, perhaps a release that actually installs properly and doesn't corrupt the screen while installing and forcing users to press the reset button, go into safe mode and uninstall their so-called Vista RC1 drivers
-
I've been testing Vista since the first public BETA, I like some things and hate other parts of this OS, but that's to be expected. However, I'm more concerned that ATi can't seem to get their act together with their latest RC1 Vista Drivers, the desktop is too herky jerky for me without proper drivers so I'm glad I dual-booted with my Win 2k install
-
Adding my $0.02 worth, I'm using an older 200GB IDE in an external USB enclosure and it works fine too with Win 2k with SP4 installed. Interestingly enough, when I recently re-installed Win 2k during the boot process to the setup, it gave me multiple choices to install to including that same external USB drive, hmm, I wonder just how slow the booting would have been
-
Hmm, since you are transferring data to this device via Win 98 and this OS only supports using FAT32, I wonder if there is an issue with the partition size of that device and the cluster size in order to use the entire 160GB ?!? I've never used any drive over 80GB for a FAT32 partition due to the cluster sizing of that filesystem and prefer to use NTFS instead. However, Win 98 can't read/write NTFS filesystem drives unless there are some third party device drivers that would allow this. I do believe there are at least one that allows you to read from an NTFS formatted drive, not sure about writing however. What I would be testing is to see if you can resize that FAT32 partition to something smaller like 40 or 80 GB and see if XP has issues with that or not. So I also take it that you are using a dial-up modem for internet connection ?!? If so then I can't really see using ICS to connect all the machines together on such a narrow pipe.

Should I use Windows XP Pro 64-bit?
jmmijo replied to longbow007's topic in Everything New Technology
I agree with Sampson, however, I'm actually Quad-Booting my gaming rig for testing purposes. I have (4)Four separate HD's so I selectively boot from XP-Pro 32-bit, XP Pro 64-bit, Vista Beta 32-bit or Vista Beta 64-bit. This is great for somebody like me that likes to mess about with compatibility testing with my games and such, however, with most users, they just want it to work. So, if you really do want to see how a 64-bit OS works, then consider either using multiple HD's or simply partition your HD into (2)Two or more sections so you can install the 32-bit version on one and the 64-bit version on another -
the main www.ntcompatible.com page always shows 3. It never updates to show the proper number of posts. Is this a script that isn't running or something to do with the forum merge ?!?
-
It was Philip, no problems there I noticed the dates were back to like 08/11 so this would make more sence since it was showing the news posts back to this date. Thanks again Philip, you're doing a fantastic job with the site
-
OK, now here's an odd one. I was reviewing news items from work today, not logged onto my home machine and the normal amount of news postings was pretty much the below 10 or so new items. Well I just get home and logon to the site and noticed that there were now nearly 500 news posts So what gives, were there really that many or jus that script has been updated or what ?!?

I would first start off by downloading the latest DirectX release, I do believe it's the July/August updates. Be sure to d/l the network install version as this will ensure you have the entire package to install from. After this installation, be sure to reboot the machine. Then d/l the latest chipset drivers for your motherboard. You didn't mention the make/model so I would check out the manufacturers website for which chipset it uses. Most like it's an Intel chipset as well. Once you install these drivers and reboot, then reinstall those latest graphics card drivers once more and reboot again. Since you've already defragged your HD, this shouldn't be the cause however, it could be that your OS install has gotten corrupted and that a fresh OS install maybe in order as well. Try the above listed tips first and see where this takes us, good luck

I figured as much Philip, just wanted to make sure is all
