I have seen a couple of Aopen motherboards that have an LGA-775 along with the 865 chipset, hence it only has an AGP slot along with only supporting DDR1 memory. However this is basically a transition type motherboard, where somebody has a good AGP card along with only DDR1 memory. Any Intel 9xx series chipset only has PCIe interfaces

I have the X800 Pro AGP version on my P4 gaming rig. I like it a lot and Half-Life 2 looks fabulous As for which interface to get, well since you do not have your new box yet, perhaps look at motherboards that support PCIe (PCI Express). I have seen some very nice boards out there like the Asus P5GD2 Premium and also an SLI rig from Asus as well, based on the nForce 4 SLI chipset for Athlon 64/FX cpu's.

Ah, APK, according to Abit's site they do support Prescott core CPU's up to 3.8, hmm, those will only be engineering samples I gather but who knows for sure http://www.abit-usa.com/products/mb/prescott_cpu_support.php However I don't see mention of the Extreme Edition, just the standard Northwood and the newer Prescott core CPU's. Here's something to ponder, there is a give and take on the latest 600 series Prescott core CPU's, they do come with 2MB of L2 cache however, the newest Extreme Edition CPU's only come in LGA-775 so that leaves your current board out. Also, will the older Galatin core Extreme Edition go down in price any with the recent announcments ?!? A 3.4EE based on the Galatin core would be better in that it has the standard trace cache for L1, then 512K of L2 cache and that huge 2MB of L3 cache, loverly Now as for the graphics card, I would consider the Gigabyte or Asus Radeon X800 Pro cards for AGP. Very nice indeed, not the cheapest of course but I think the pricing has gone down a bit due to the latest X850 releases. As for nVidia in the AGP form factor, there are both 6600 and 6800 available now too, not just in PCIe.

So what's the exchange rate between the Australian dollar and the US dollar ?!? Also, perhaps with the Euro as well, just to get a feel for the cost in other parts of the world My personal take is you can actually make a PC cheap, however, there is a point of diminishing returns, i.e., limited functionality for instance. Oh and of course always those that seem to think you can play games with said cheap box, but in reality it's not much more then just an email/web browser box, almost like an info kiosk or something like a WebTV device.

Hardware People - Upgrade CPU suggestions & Video card too
jmmijo replied to jmmijo's topic in Hardware
@Scintex, that's all well and good but for those of us wanting to run Windows for say a gaming rig, then the mention of Sun's multicore CPU's is pretty worthless However, that being said, it's nice to actually see both AMD and Intel coming out with some multi-core x86 cpu's in the not so distant future just for those of us wanting to run a Wintendo box -
Hardware People - Upgrade CPU suggestions & Video card too

APK, the reason I said 3.4EE is that's the fastest I've seen available. Does this mean Intel didn't release a faster version of the Galatin core EE, don't really know for sure. The issue is that Intel, in their not-so-infinite wisdom, want's to push their LGA-775 CPU's and motherboards, hence why should they continue to produce socket 478 stuff anymore Also, Intel is pushing harder now for their BTX form factor, this I think is long overdue. It's a much better chassis and motherboard design, especially for the Prescott core space heaters. http://www.intel.com/cd/channel/reseller/asmo-na/eng/95346.htm -
can't open more than on copy of internet explorer
jmmijo replied to johngkerr's topic in Everything New Technology
I prefer to use Maxthon myself, also uses the IE engine and has tabbed viewing and built-in pop-up blocking It's so much better then to use multiple instances of IE running. I've also tried out Opera and the latest Firefox too, both have their good and bad points too, however you can't go wrong with either choice IMO -
Don't forget that Zaphod Beeblebrox invented the Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster Emblazened in bold red text were the words: DON'T PANIC

I could delve deeper into that very subject, however I don't think it would be appropriate for this forum, heheheheheheehe

DING, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding!!!!!!!!!! We have a winner, tell us what he won there Jay @Felix, yeah Marcia was nice, but I always had a thing for Eve Plumb(Jan) for some reason

I think I'll become President of the the universe too and go steal some kind of hot-rod space craft, oh wait, what's this black ship doing just sitting here in the space dock. Nobody around I think I'll just take this one for a ride. Nice, it has improbability drive, I can be in every location in the known universe at the very same time, very cool ride

I bet the Pan-Dimensional Beings (AKA the mice), were none too happy with the Vogon's when they destroyed the Earth to make way for a Hyper-Space Bypass

That computer is called the Earth

(No joke, I only really pay attention to what I build here, & that's once every few years only, & then I take a peek around online like @ Tom's Hardware Page, or just ask you guys here usually!) * This come from building systems regularly, or something? APK P.S.=> I seem to recall, maybe from Philipp's "new server this weekend" thread in the FEEDBACK forums, that you have or work for a company that builds machines... correct? If so, it's showing... just something I observed about you, in that you DO know what type of cards do what, etc. apk Thanks for the comments there APK, I appreciate that Now as for a guru, well that's to be debated of course.... I do build systems, every Monday - Friday that is, and of course this means I get to test out mainstream and both high/low-end hardware and what seems to work and what doesn't work as well. Since I build systems for both corporate and retail clients, these systems run the gammut of pricing and performance. As for the feedback comments, I see that Philip went with Dell. Well there's no accounting for taste, but as long as Dell is giving Philip the level of service and support that he needs then I have no problems with it Now back on topic here, as soon as we can get a bit more info on this users motherboard make/model we maybe able to give a more informed suggestion for a graphics card. I have a feeling (s)he may have an older AGP 2x motherboard which basically relegates the user to an older AGP 2x/4x card only.

Because you're on such a tight budget, it's going to limit what you can really do. That being said I would recommend either the ATi 9200 series or the nVidia 5200 series GPU cards. These will be decent performers for the money and they work as either an AGP 4x or 8x card. If your motherboard will only support up to an AGP 2x then that really puts you in a bind and I'm afraid that when you upgrade to another motherboard you're going to have to get a graphics card then as your current card would most likely not function with the new motherboard that supports only AGP 4x or 8x cards. So since you didn't mention the make/model of your motherboard, perhaps if you could find that out then a better recommendation could be made for the graphics card upgrade
-
Well it's pretty easy to find here in the US, not sure about where you live however
-
Yes and No. Basically most/many identical standard modules should work, both need to be DDR400/PC3200 speed and also need to have matching CL(CAS Latency) speed ratings. This means they should both be CL2, CL2.5 or CL3. You may however find that some modules will not work on some boards either in single or dual-channel modes due to timings of the memory cells themselves. This can sometimes be a hit or miss situation, best bet is to look at the motherboard manufacturers website for Qualified memory modules. Also note that you tend to have much better luck and performance with name branded, higher quality memory modules, a couple of brands I recommend are: Kingston HyperX Corsair TwinX

This error/bsod seems to indicate some issues with the memory. I've seen this with desktops when attempting to install XP or 2K. To correct it I've had to replace the dimm module(s) in that machine. You could have a flaky SO-DIMM in your laptop I'm afraid. Did you recently add another stick of ram ?!? If so, perhaps it's this stick causing the problem. Try removing it and see what happens. If you only have the single stick of ram then I'd look to get it replaced.

I'm not so sure EMU talk is appropriate on this forum, MOD's ?!?
-
Sounds like a good thing here Philip, too bad I didn't build the server for you. Since I work for a system builder and one of forte's is building Dual-Xeon's using Supermicro Motherboards and Chassis, from 1U on up
-
So I take it your old machine is made by RM ?!? If not then there is most likely not going to be anything you can do as I would think this is a customized OEM recover CD, it most likely is looking at some DMI info in the motherboard BIOS to check for this being an RM machine.
-
It could be the motherboard, but here is something to try first. Find the Clear CMOS jumper on the board, then unplug the power cord that connects up to the power supply. Then remove the CMOS battery, then move the Clear CMOS jumper to the clear position, usually across pins 2-3. Then wait for about 10~20 minutes, yes that's minutes After about this amount of time then reverse the process and power on the machine. Take note of the detected CPU speed. If it's still not correct then check out the manufacturers website for a possible BIOS update and see if that helps out.

Microsoft does a great thing imo for users of their OS + wares
