Philip, I seem to get this alot and I think it maybe from the browser as it also happens on another site as well. Here's the copy/paste from the error: Line:2 Char:7 Code:0 Error:Invalid character URL:http://www.ntcompatible.com/whatsnew.php?id=2

I'm thinking it's related to Red Tide as this occurs naturally from time to time

Realtek ALC880 integrated audio in motherboard for AMD64?
jmmijo replied to J R W's topic in Hardware
That's a tough one because I've just built a box for a friend using the Asus P5GD2 Premium board and it has Cmedia HD Audio Codec onboard. It sounds surprisingly nice for onboard sound that is I've also been using the Aopen i915Ga-PLF/i915Pa-PLF that only uses the ALC850 codec, also not a bad sounding codec. I've only built a couple of the machines using the Intel motherboards with the ALC880 codec, but since the techroom has crappy little speakers you can't really hear much of a difference My money however is on the Audigy 2-ZS Platinum, I still think these cards sound the best, especially working over a 5.1/6.1/7.1 sound system And here's Cmedia's HD Audio Codec page. -
This is good info, thanks dosfreak

AFAIK, any machine connected to the network has to be a member of the domain, if you have a PDC or the same workgroup. Chances are they are not and this is why the messenger service is not working for them. However I think you can send to a direct IP address as well. I personally hate this service so I turn it off, but give this a shot and try net send to the specific IP address and see what happens.

Problems with audio cd tracks in some games (especially Sentinel Returns)
jmmijo replied to Dias24's topic in Games
Ah, I see what's happening, you're right and I was wrong on this Be default XP Home/Pro enables the digital CD-Audio for this CD-ROM device be default. Basically this is in the Properties for each optical drive you have installed in your machine. If you uncheck this box then do the change in the WMP to analog it will indeed behave as I stated. I guess this whole thing is a nice learning experience, so I thank you for this @American Zombie, you are a smarty pants, but in a good way -
I'm one of those that has tasted broadband since almost the beginning, back when US West(Qwest) had begun their xDSL testing in the PDX area Now that Qwest moved over to having MSN as their content/email provider, I then moved over to Comcast who was actually ATTBI when I started with them. I guess since I've getten hooked on broadband I'll attempt to not have to ever go back to narrowband ever again, knocks on woodrow

Has more to do with if the device supports CDDA. No I'm not, here's what I'm trying to say here is if you are playing a game that only plays back the standard Redbook CD Audio, this is going to be a an analog output only, hence the reason for finding out if you have an analog audio cable connected or not. You can easily change your Windows Media Player from a Digital Audio Playback to the older analog output by changing the properties in WMP via the Tools -> Options -> Devices Tab. Look for your optical drive then change the following. Playback (Digital by Default) change the Radio Button to Analog. Sometimes you also need to enable the Use Error Correction button too Now Mr. Smarty Pants, try that without an audio cable and listen for any CD Audi Playback -
Problems with audio cd tracks in some games (especially Sentinel Returns)
jmmijo replied to Dias24's topic in Games
Hmm, I wonder if this is an issue with how the game is attempting to access the audio tracks, let me explain. With Windows XP the default method of Audio CD playback is digital ripping rather then the old analog style. So you have to do some checking here to verify this. 1) Open the CD or DVD drive properties and look for the option that says enable digital CD Audio for this CD-ROM device. It's normally checked so uncheck this box. 2) Now attempt to playback the audio tracks via Windows Media Player or whatever you happen to use. Does the audio still work or does it stop working now ?!? If it still works then this verifies that you still have an analog audio cable connected to your drive and the sound card. If the audio stops working it most likely means that you don't have an analog cable connected to your drive. These cables are pretty cheap to get however does this mean that the game also uses analog audio cd output or is there something else still going on ?!? Not sure yet but this will help narrow down what the cause could be -
I pretty much agree, I prefer Power DVD as well. However I've only been using v4 and v5 so I can't really comment on v6 yet

So since it's a Celeron 2.8, it's possible that it will only recognice it as a 2.6 and possibly only clock it as such. Since the latest BIOS update does not mention support for this CPU it's also possible that again the mobo may just power on and not POST. Will this damage the CPU/Mobo, probably not since the CPU is still an older Northwood core CPU. All I can say is, if this is a local shop, could you possibly ask if they would be willing to test it out for you ?!? If you have to purchase the CPU online then this is a most difficult decision, you maybe out the price of the CPU My thinking is really just to upgrade the mobo and CPU but of course this usually means you have to upgrade the RAM for the latest Dual-Channel memory boards

Christian, how the heck are you man, long time no post On to the topic at hand, well here's the skinny on pretty much any mobo out there, be it Intel, Asus, Aopen whatever. Yes, Intel produced the P4(Willamette, Northwood) at 400 FSB and with 128K and 512K L2 Cache respectively. These are the CPU's you can use on this mobo. According to the chart You can not even use the P4(Northwood) that runs at 533 FSB with 512K L2 Cache. You could try using one of the P4's listed above that runs at 533 FSB. Most likely the mobo will power on but will not POST You can not use any of the latest CPU models from Intel, i.e., no Celeron D models period. These are based on the Prescott core running at 533 FSB and has 256K L2 Cache. You can not use any of the P4(Northwood) that runs at 800 FSB either, nor can you use any of the P4(Prescott) cpu's that run at either 533 or 800 FSB. This just plain looks to be one of the first Socket 478 boards out there, not even 533 FSB support

What are small time computer sellers/resellers going to do?
jmmijo replied to pbuckne's topic in Slack Space
I don't have any issue with this at all, it appears that these resellers were not including at least an OEM software package with the COA. I work for a local system builder, we sell the full OEM versions of XP Home/Pro, Win 2K Pro, all the server OS flavors from 2K and beyond. They all come with a COA attached except for the Volume/Site license versions we sell from time to time. You have to call a specific phone number to get the correct CD Key as all you get is a printed COA from the vendor -

Liking or disliking something is more a personal preference do you agree ?!?

I have 1x ide drive & 1x sata drive,am I doing sumit wrong!! newbie. Yes and no, most users do not realize they need to adjust a system BIOS setting to properly show up to (6)Six storage devices. So, go into your system BIOS on a reboot of the machine using something like the DEL/F1/F2/F6 keys, depending on the make and model of your motherboard. Now find the Advanced BIOS Settings and look for something relating to the IDE Mode. This is be default set to AUTO when you need to change this to Enhanced Mode instead. Once changed then save and exit and it should show up under the Disk Management applet. Now to open this app, you need to open the Control Panel, then look for the Administrative Tools. Double Click on this and then look for the Computer Management icon and double click on this. Now on the left hand pane look for the Disk Management option and click on this. Then after a few seconds you should see the storage devices show up. Look for the new drive that says something like Unpartitioned Space. You will need to create a new partition and format this partition for use with files/folders and such

Nice links there I also liked that episode of MYTHBUSTERS that dealt with CD-ROM Shattering It was Season 1, Episode 2. EDIT: Damn, there goes my post count, me and my fat fingers

Most likely that CD, since it had some scratches, may also have been faulty in that the material used to make that CD was not up to par or just plain inferior. I've heard that if you can spin a disc in an optical drive fast enough it will fly apart, I've never had this happen so I can't attest to it. I would also say that most likely your optical drive is now toast as well. See if the place of purchase will exchange it for a new one. These drives are pretty cheap now a days so the cost should not have been too much either

Hmm, hopefully not :x
