Thanks for the compliment APK As for the original poster, please follow APK's advice here, this happens to me on occasion because I'm not paying attention

Here's a little trick to remembering how the floppy drive lettering works on the data cable. A: drive is connected AFTER the twist in the data cable, and B: drive is connected BEFORE the twist in the data cable The reason the floppy drive LED stays on is because the cable is on backwards, usually on the drive side of things. Another thing to look at is that some drive models have pin 1 located next to the power connector and some do not!!!
-
First, check the data/ribbon cable. Reconnect it at both ends. Try again and see if the problem still exists. If so then try a new data/ribbon cable. These are really cheap so you should have a couple on hand for this kind of thing You can use either the standard UDMA33 cable or the newer UDMA66 and above cable, both should work. The other thing to check is to make sure that the jumper on the optical drive is set for MASter and is connected to the secondary controller port connector. If this fails then you need to look at getting another optical drive, these too have become pretty darn cheap, good luck...

Well I have not had any issues with the Steam connection problem that so many others seem to be having, however, since I'm running XP and I have it set to auto-connect to Steam on boot-up, it can't connect until I connect with my Email app or browser first. Guess that thing about not loading the TCP stack is correct

Hmm, my install/decrypt seemed to take about 30~35 minutes I do agree that having Steam running in the BG is not good as I don't always want to play MP games so there. Perhaps Vavle will get feedback on this and correct it later on. I do however understand that they are trying to maintain the least amount of piracy but I don't think it's going to work as I've seen half a dozen different cracks on usenet, all purporting to allow you to use HL2 without Steam. As for the account working/not-working after a couple of years of inactivity, I can't really say. What does Vavle say about this ?!? I didn't find anything specific about account inactivity on the STEAM helpdesk site

A much easier way of getting the Riven DVD to work with windows 2000 is to use the following patch: http://amoebasoft.mine.nu/files/rivendvd/ Have fun playing Riven! Even tho this thread is a bit dated, this is good info for myself as I have the DVD version as well and for some reason couldn't get it to work under 2K/XP either

OK, just started playing HL2 now, man the eye candy is so sweet, I love the water reflections and physics now. Looks so much more real then just a couple of years ago. It helps to have one of the nextgen gfx cards too, an X800 Pro I voted for HL2 only because I don't own an Xbox console, nor any console for that matter. Besides I think when/if I do purchase an Xbox I'll be picking up Fable first

WinRar as it now supports 7-zip archives, great for my, ahem, collection of stuff I still however use the old DOS based ZIP tool for my older DOS boxes for game archives and such

Check out PRICEWATCH as a base to go on and then some of the bigger e-tailers like NewEgg/Amazon etc... Also check out brick-n-mortor shops like CompUSA for instance for a nice comparison

No I think you maybe mis-understanding what I'm trying to say here. You reboot the machine and go into the system BIOS and make sure the boot order is set to boot from the CD/DVD drive before the HD. I use the following boot order myself. CD/DVD or Optical Removable or Floppy HD or C: Boot Other Devices - Enabled Now after you've verified this, then insert your XP install media CD, it's a bootable disc, into your optical drive, if you have more then one, then best to place it into the optical drive set for MASter Now save and exit the BIOS settings and the machine will reboot. There should be a line on the screen that appears after a few seconds that states, to boot from cd/dvd press any key. This is where the boot process starts!!!!

Tried to install standrad driver that come with windows... didn´t work. Does anyone have any ideas on how do downgrade to the 32-bit xp then ?????? To reinstall the 32-bit version of XP just requires that you insert your CD install media into your optical drive and when the option to boot from the CD appears, just press any key to get it started. Now you will need to delete, recreate and reformat the partition once again to get the proper install without any left-overs from the 64-bit version

I recently installed the windows 64-bit edition on my computer and everything is good but I can´t hear any sound. It seems that I have no drivers installed for a multimedia audio controller, and I can´t find any driver on the net. So if anyone could help me fix this or help me how to uninstall the 64-bit version of windows so I can return to the 32-bit version I would most thankful. My system config. CPU : AMD 64 3000+ MOBO : Asrock k8 upgrade 760-gx There are some drivers on Asrock homeage but none of them seem to work with a 64-bit system. I looked at both the site for Asrock and Cmedia, who makes the AC97 Audio Codec. There doesn't seem to be any 64-bit device drivers for the audio function at this time. Cmedia ASrock My only other suggestion is to find a cheap PCI sound card with a supported 64-bit driver package. I do believe that there are some Realtek AC97 codecs that are supported and have driver package d/l

Well I can't say that this isn't something that has not happened before in that there may indeed be an issue with this GPU but more likely it's some combination of things, i.e., motherboard + chipset + os + drivers. That being said APK owns one of these cards if I remember correctly and he would have a much better idea on this issue then I would. I've built many boxes using the 9200/9600 this past year or so and have not come across many problems that an updated driver didn't take care of. I personally am using the X800 Pro on my gaming rig but I have not run America's Army. I mainly play D2: LOD and DS: LOA I'm currently attempting to troubleshoot some issues with DS: LOA and sound. This may indeed be a related issue to what you're experiencing so if I come across any solution for my problem I'll be sure to post the resolution here on this forum

So a couple of things to check out here: 1) Since you have a P4S series board, this means it has the SiS chipset. Have you d/l the latest AGP device driver from THEIR website yet ?!? It's currently at v1.17e. 2) Also you didn't mention using either Catalyst v4.11 or v4.12 yet. Have you tried these out ?!? Also, you may want to check the AGP settings in the System BIOS for things like AGP 4x or 8x. Try both settings to see if there is any difference or not. Also check out the AGP Fast Writes, sometimes enabling this feature will cause problems, but for the most part it does not. And one final note, let's not go half-cocked over bashing ATi or even nVidia for that matter. I've used both types of GPU's for years now and have not found any one type to have any more or less problems then the other. That's a very fine graphics card IMO

No prob, it's the same for 2K and I do believe NT as well, however NT doesn't display this info bar at the bottom of the screen, it was considered an hidden function of the text setup mode

Actually its the F6 Key, you will see a small blue bar at the bottom of the screen stating this, just press the F6 key a couple of times and that should do it

Do you have a licence to use this computer, sir?

We should all go back to using an SSH connection along with Pine and Lynx. Who needs all this graphics goo-gaa anyways -
From my days working at a local ISP I seem to recall that the your bandwidth carrier will qualify your line for it's maximum speed and then throttle back the bandwidth with either the xDSL router and/or the local exchange equipment (DSLAM's). Your router may indeed be giving the correct downstream limit available that the local exchange equipment is telling it but it's like an electronic governor limiting you to the speed you paid for When I first had xDSL installed at my residence the local carrier US West/Qwest didn't have any bandwidth limits, I was paying for a 256k/128k line and was getting something like a 768k/256k pipe instead, very nice indeed

No, there isn't any way of doing this, you need to get a floppy drive Sorry about this but these drives are very cheap you know. This is the reason I still have one in each of my boxes due to the way Microsoft still works the F6 install process. Perhaps one of these days they will allow you to choose something other then the A: drive As for the partition question, no this shouldn't have any effect on the install process other then it will show you if you have more then one partitioned/unpartitioned space available to install the OS onto...
