Do you have a licence to use this computer, sir?
jmmijo replied to Curley_Boy's topic in Slack Space
Good idea however this wouldn't work, i.e., a basic operations test. Why ?!? Well so far the use of a computer, infected or clean hasn't caused any loss of life. Until such a time as it does, the two major effects this has on the rest of us is lost productivity and of course this in turn causes financial loss, both on a personal and professional basis. You would think however that the financial incetive would be there but perhaps until you see a huge loss of any one countries GDP, I don't think you going to see much of a call for something like this. I do however suggest you always give some tutoring on the basics of computer operation to your clients, for a fee of course -
External hard drive on a notebook with USB 1.0
jmmijo replied to nyamees's topic in Buy, Sell or Trade
Check to see if the that external drive supports USB v1.0 as I do believe most if not all external drive units require at least v1.1 or later -
Yeah, the F6 device driver may need to be updated. Try using the FOLLOWING driver package and see if this helps out or not. Remember to copy over the correct drivers to a floppy disk so you can do an F6 install !!!!! The other option is to install to an ATA/IDE drive instead of SATA

Well I'm getting ready, in the next hour or so to build a new box for a friend of mine using the following card. I won't really know how well this card will do until I get the machine built and burned in

DOES ANY ONE KNOW HOW TO INSTALL WINDOWS XP ON A 32 MB OF RAM SYSTEM?
jmmijo replied to MATTdoria's topic in Everything New Technology
I concur, I really don't recommend even Win 98 on that kind of system, basically on Win 95 or the combo MS-DOS6.21/Win 3.xx -
It does not appear that Samsung offers utilities like this that all the other storage makers do. They only refer you to Ontrack to d/l their Data Advisor app. However I did a GOOGLE search and there is some possible solutions out there, good luck

I discovered that the CD tray will open when I press the eject button while Windows hangs. And the HDD led lids up for a second. Same when I close, open, close, etc. But the rest is still frozen.... Arghhhh! I hope the new cable will solve the problem. Well if the new cable doesn't resolve this issue then the only other thing I can suggest is using a different drive

Here's the LINK to the Intel INF d/l site
-
First thing I would try is a new ribbon/data cable for the optical drive, these are cheap so you should have a couple of spares on hand just in case The other option is to make sure you've installed the latest Intel INF driver package from Intel's website. Then the last thing to check is to check the BIOS setup for the IDE/SATA controllers. Do you have it set for AUTO or ENHANCED mode ?!? I use ENHANCED mode for 2K/XP installs and AUTO for 9x installs. AUTO usually works just fine but perhaps it's hanging on something here, but most likely you're on the right track so good luck

I know VIA was working on a fix/update to their SATA drivers to accomplish a proper install with the F6 option, last I read it wasn't finished yet. Now as far as nVidia goes, I don't know but a look at THEIR website mentions both PATA and SATA along with RAID as well

Any advice appreciated Thankyou Actually PM is the best tool for this job, however by default, PM uses the Quick Format option. Go into the File menu and select Preferences. There should be a checkbox that reads something like Sector by Sector Check/Format. Just uncheck this box and clear the partition then try it again and it should take about 30-45 minutes to complete.

ERD Disk and Last Known Good Configuration Question
jmmijo replied to dazz1973's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Ask and ye shall receive Here's a step-by-step on how to run the Emergency Recovery Wizard under XP. 1) Right-Mouse click on your system/boot drive, generally the C: drive and select Properties. 2) Then click on the Tools tab at the top of the dialog box. 3) Click on the Backup now button near the bottom of this dialog box. 4) The Backup or Restore Wizard now starts, look for the line in the middle where you can click the Advanced Mode option, click on this to open the Advanced Mode options for this tool. 5)Look for the button near the bottom that says Automated System Recovery Wizard and click on this. Then just follow the on-screen prompts to complete. -
A Domain is a specifc NAME given to a LAN that includes one or more Domain Controllers(Servers). The advantage is that you have a dedicated server to log/track all users and shares via Active Directory and you can also use this server for other things such as a SQL server and/or SBS etc... The disadvantage to this is the cost and maintanence required to keep this configuration running. A Workgroup has not dedicated server(s) to track users and such, it's all done via each client machine on the LAN, this includes shared objects and user logons. Advantage, cheaper to run and maintain as you only need two machines running in the same workgroup to be called a workgroup

Many 875/865 motherboards have an option in the BIOS for ENHANCED mode IDE/SATA control. Usually the default setting is AUTO so you need to change this to ENHANCED which will only work under Windows 2000/XP and not under Win 9x
-
This appears to be an issue with the motherboard BIOS rev. I found something with a GOOGLE search that seems to go over this very error. It is however based on a Gigabyte motherboard but the error message is the same. You may need to contact Abit about this for more information

One thing I've noticed recently is that some of the power supply manufacturers have gone to a (2)Two Thermal Fan solution, i.e., one 80mm and another 92mm auxillary fan. Both are pretty darn quiet and move a lot more air then a single fan and thus keeps your supply running cooler to begin with The other thing that can be done is to replace any case fans with thermal fans too, this way they only speed up once the ambient temp gets above a certain preset temp and then the fan slows down again once the ambient tem goes back below this threshold. And then the other option is to use something like Smartfan technology that many mobo manufactures use and set the thermal temps accordingly in the BIOS...

Originally posted by violentgreen: Quote: Well the issue is the right click menu and not the system tray. The system tray isn't a big deal. The right click menu is annoying the piss out of me. Ah, now I understand, well I bet that may be a reg entry and I've not really looked for it as it doesn't bother me that it's there...
-
Did you search for any reg entries with comlib.dll in them ?!? You maybe right in believing some leftover entries are still in there. Also check here in this location to see if something is still running from this malware. HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run There will most likely be some other normal apps getting started this way, for instance NAV starts from here

THIS FORUM SUCKS Also note that this is now a Sims 2 Helpdesk forum Sorry, I just had to say that @blinx2003, ross is giving some good advice here and after registering your cd key with Steam, you should make sure your chipset/vga/sound drivers packs are up to date, also make sure you have the latest DirectX 9.0c installed!!!
-
Well, go into the ATi display properties, one of the tabs has a checkbox for the Control Panel in the Systray, this can be unchecked and on the next reboot it should be gone. Also, when you install the device drivers, you need to choose Custom install and you can then uncheck the ATi Control Panel installation at that point As for the colors, that I can't help you with, I've not experienced any issues like this after installing any of the latest Catalyst driver packs...
-
Sorry, I've only had experience with Antec's TruPower line of supplies, which I find to be very good indeed
-
Since you've updated to DX9.0c, I would recommend that you also update the following device drivers for your system: Chipset/INF driver package, I usually go to the chipset OEM like Intel/Via/SiS etc.... VGA/Graphics driver package, again go to the GPU/VGA chipset OEM like ATi/nVidia.... I would also recommend finding out what Audio chipset you're using, wether it be onboard or a separate sound card and getting the very latest driver package for that, as I said above, I go to the Audio chipset OEM like Realtek/Cmedia/Analog Devices/Creative Labs(Soundblaster) etc... Basically find the latest driver packages for your system and download these then install them one at a time and reboot after each one is installed for proper operation of your machine

Linksys Broadband Router - some websites are inaccessible
jmmijo replied to Phalanx-Imawano's topic in Slack Space
Interesting read this thread was I too have the same Linksys router listed but I have an older firmware rev, so I must not have come across this issue. Now thanks to everyone, if I do upgrade then there seems to be a quick fix for it
