Who is smarter, AlexStaar or Adamvjackson??

I mainly post from work since that is where I have the need to most access this forum so if you don't see a post during the weekend you know why Today however I seem to have a few extra minutes so I'm here...
  2. Sorry man, it's a foreign safety film, in German or Dutch and it's just hilarious. You'll have to view it with Windows Media Player after you allow this site thru. Yes I know the ads and such, but just temp add this site until you watch the video. I've seen it a dozen times and it still splits my sides

    Resident Evil: Nemesis

I think I liked John Trivolta best in Face Off, followed closely by Pulp Fiction and Broken Arrow Royale with Cheese anybody...

    Resident Evil: Nemesis

Interesting, thanks for the review however I need to see something this weekend so I was thinking of this one, I only go to the matinee's because around these parts it's a bit cheaper then full price Also, the movie was called Resident Evil: Apocolypse

Who is smarter, AlexStaar or Adamvjackson??

Giving out advice anybody can do, the trick however is giving out pertinent, correct and timely advice which I find both seem very adept at doing if I must say so myself Now as to the "SMART" part of your question, that I'm going to leave for somebody or some being that can attest to this directly since I don't know either personally, only via this wonderful forum
  6. When I get home from work I'll try them out
  7. Oh and one other tidbit of info on about the Athlon 64-FX's/Opteron's and the newest socket 939 CPU's is that they have the memory controllers right on the CPU, nice bit of memory bandwidth enhancement as well
  8. Actually I've built a couple of Athlon 64 boxes as gaming rigs, I actually noticed that the 32-bit XP Pro ran a bit faster, the desktop seemed to be quicker in refreshing and such. Just fealt smoother et.al. The other thing to note is that all the AMD64 CPU's have the no-execute bit in hardware too
  9. I like the idea of being able to dual-boot Windows 32-bit and 64-bit on different partitions when using an Athlon 64/FX/Opteron CPU Also you can use a Linux distro for 64-bit support as well...
  10. It's nice however I would like to see how things work with an Athlon FX-53 using the Vapochill system cooling and an ATi Radeon X800 XT Platinum instead. I'd also upgrade the memory to MAX just because pricing is no object here One note you folks may want to look at for NAS storage would be this little solution

Anyone else with ideas for SIS 900 ethernet?

I'm thinking because it's a soft/hardware based PHY rather then a true hardware based ethernet I've been building a huge amount of boxes around the Aopen MX46-533V mobo which is an SiS based mobo along with the 900 series NIC. Even though XP sees the ethernet during initial OS install you still have to install the v1.16 or later drivers for XP to resolve a proper MAC address for the nic, otherwise if you do an IPCONFIG /all you get an all zero address.

Anyone else with ideas for SIS 900 ethernet?

This may or may not be something to look at but just in case please do. Getting the latest OEM drivers from SiS instead of the notebook manufacturer maybe a better idea as the latest drivers there are v1.17. If you're running XP, home or pro, the OS autodetects the SiS 900 series ethernet, however it does not for some reason provide a proper MAC addres, other then all zero's which of course is bad. The only way to have a proper MAC address for this ethernet port is to install the device drivers and reboot the machine. So, try installing the latest OEM drivers and see what happens
  13. Hmm, I seem to have a poser here with my gaming rig. I thought the OS was hosed so I backed up any important data to my server then flatlined the RAID array and reinstalled XP Pro. Well it didn't help in this case I think I may have an issue with one of these parts, the soundcard, an Audigy 2-ZS. The motherboard, an Aopen AX4C Max II. The matched pair of ram, Apacer 512MB, DDR400, CL3 or perhaps even the power supply, a Channel Well Tech ISO-500D. I just uninstalled the drivers for the Audigy 2 card and rebooted the machine, went into the BIOS and enabled the AC97 codec. I then went into the device manager and disabled the Creative Labs stuff as it wants to redetect it of course. I thought this resolved the issue but it only lasted longer before the system spontaneously rebooted I will remove the sound card as I left it in the PCI slot just in case the extra power draw and/or the fact that it's plugged in maybe causing some kind of compatiblity issue

Dungeon Siege + 875P Motherboard Issue

Since I can't edit my own post I'll have to reply instead Here's a possible solution to my issue. After some more testing it appears that there is a BIOS setting that can cause some issues with memory timings in conjunction with the motherboard. Aopen calls this feature PBE (Performance Boost Engine). Basically it's a way for the BIOS to tweak some memory timing settings on the fly to wring out the most performance out of your dual-channel board. Well I had it set for Fast and there is even a Turbo mode which gives a warning about stability. Hmm, so Fast mode could also have issues with stability but you may not realize it until something demanding is going Well I set this to disabled instead and things seem to be going ok without incident, however the soundtrack will still eventually go out, with either the onboard AC97 or the Audigy 2 card I'll talk to Aopen America about this on Tuesday and see if there are any other possible compatbility issues.

    Weird Audio Problem with XP

I'm going to assume you are using the onboard AC97 sound codec so try this out. 1) Uninstall the audio drivers from the OS and restart the machine. 2) Go into your system BIOS and check under the Integrated Peripherals section for the Onboard/AC97 Audio and double check that it's enabled or says Auto. I prefer enabled if it's available, although some versions of the BIOS do not offer this option 3) Now save and exit and restart into the safe mode for the OS. Once back to the Safe Mode Desktop, check the Device Manager under the Audio section and if any duplicate AC97 devices show up hear then delete/uninstall them via the device manager by right-mouse clicking on that object. For instance if your motherboard uses the Realtek AC97 codec, then you may have something left in Device Manager stating this 4) Now download the latest OEM drivers from the AC97 chip manufacturer, here are some likely ones you have installed. http://www.realtek.com.tw/index.aspx http://www.viaarena.com/ http://www.cmedia.com.tw/ http://www.analog.com/ Once you have the correct latest drivers downloaded then install these and reboot after the installation. I hope this helps

    STOP 7F Error

So, on a Win 2K Pro config, the client is getting the above listed BSOD. Here's what I found on Microsoft's website. Has anybody come across this one before and can the BIOS and/or CPU be the cause like what is described on the web page ?!? I just repaired this client's work startion and all was working fine and since we use the pre-install CD's I ran the sysprep to factory seal the machine. I asked the client and they indeed had to type in their OEM cd key and after clicking next/ok the screen went black and the machine restarted. I had the client go into safe mode and uncheck the auto-reboot box and this is the BSOD they get. Any help would be appreciated, thanks

    STOP 7F Error

The problem is that this machine ran fine at the shop, in fact what I do is run 3D Mark 2001-SE in looping mode over night and then reboot the machine and do a final check. Everything was just fine, I even checked the CPU temp in the BIOS after rebooting and gave the all important touch test to the cpu heatsink as this tells me right away if something is amiss with the CPU The issue here is that the machine is running an old P4-1.7a which runs at only 400MHz FSB. This is a basic workstation for the client along with a 40GB WD. I will look into the BIOS update after checking with Aopen America about this issue. You would think this problem would have shown up when I did the fresh OS install and device drivers, especially since you have to reboot so often

Windows Media Player 10: Anyone tried it?

    Thanks for the link APK

24 Bit Color and Video Cards

Another side note on the graphics display in True Color mode, this is also called 16.7 Million color mode and mode graphics card drivers now call it 32-bit mode because of the extra alpha-channel bit added to the 24-bit True Color mode. So if your driver does not have a specific 24-bit selection but does have the 32-bit selection, then you choose that and the app(s) should work just fine

    Chaintech MPM800 Issues

Ok, has anybody used this board before, I've tried two different motherboards and both have issues with both Radeon and nVidia GPU cards. The most compatible seems to be the Radeon 7000 card. http://www.chaintechusa.com/tw/eng/product_spec.asp?MPSNo=13&PISNo=204 Basically the machine will BSOD after the initial reboot of the Catalyst drivers, both v4.6 and 4.5. As for the nVidia card, I just grabbed a GeForce FX 5200 and it locks up during the initial install of XP. Went into the BIOS settings and turned everything to off or slow, including changing the AGP to 4x and no fast writes etc. I've also tried using the following memory modules. Apacer 512MB/DDR400 Kingston ValueRAM 512MB/DDR400 TwinMOS 256MB/DDR400 Of course this is a fairly new board and there are not any BIOS updates yet and the boards I have are the same rev as on their website. Any tips would be appreciated but I have my doubts about this board as I've never liked Paintech boards

Actually this didn't work, I tried multiple times of deleting the partition and reformatting the HD, long format instead of quick via our pre-install CD's. I even tried another CD to no avail, also different graphics cards and memory sticks didn't help at all I'm afraid As for the benchmarks, well that may as well be but I'm afraid that our clients *ONLY* want reliability, not performance and besides the Asus solution was just what the client wanted and they have since placed and order for 25 identical systems, enough said As for Paintech, well their quality control sucks as I've had issues with their boards since the Socket 370 days, blech

    Local volume search engine?

I wish I knew of something besides the Indexing service BTW - what you want to do sounds a lot like what Microsoft envisions for their Longhorn release don't you think ?!?
  23. Yeah I saw it when it came out, I was a bit disappointed with the lack of more AvP as the human's seemed to be more of a mucking about or a monkey wrench into the works kind of thing. It did however clear up a lot of things about the two species in general that is and yes they left the barn door wide open for a sequel
  24. Well the original Alien blew my mind, it wasn't anything like I had seen before or since, lot's of copy-cats of course
  25. I'm not sure where this paragraph came from myself "Both qualities are important for lubricant design. A computer's hard drive is polished to a mirror finish to create as perfect a surface as possible on which to record, retrieve and erase thousands of hours' worth of data over its lifetime. A lubricant coating shields the disk from damage during contact with the head, which can fly back and forth across the disk dozens of times per second." The last time I saw a head actually make contact with the media surface on an HD the platter was not in good shape and of course the drive was useless. This is called a head crash, typically the r/w heads fly across the surface of the drive on a cushion of air and at the high speeds of HD's now, 7200~15000 RPM a r/w head making contact would surely cause lots of damage This aside it appears to be a good thing and of course using fluid-dynamic bearings helps out a lot too
