Cd-Burner XP Pro: Anyone tried it? How's it working for you??
jmmijo replied to jmmijo's topic in Software
I hear you too APK, I only collect and use "TRUE" freeware apps when I can. These are the ones that don't include any kind of spy/malware with them -
Spidey 2 was great, the El chase scene, done in the Windy City BTW was fantastic I liked how Sam Raimi did some quick nods to his Evil Dead series as well and of course both Ted and Bruce were in this one I will most likely see I-Robot as well just to see how close or loose to Asimov this happens to be Now where the hell are the RAMA films

Are you sure ?!? How about running it on top of MS-DOS 5.xx instead
-
The issue here is wether Microsoft will allow the seller to transfer said COA or not. I bet if you really want to get to brass tacks on this one you will really be obliged to purchase a retail copy of XP Home/Pro instead of an OEM version

What I want to see from ATi now is a SLI type configuration with PCI-Express cards like what nVidia is proposing
-
@Philip, does the count also reflect search/spider bots ?!?

Well actually VIA purchased what was once Cyrix so in a way their latest S370 CPU's are based on these I do have experince with the old Cyrix CPU's and perhaps you can glean more info from this site for your needs. I'm not familiar with trying to purchase a mobo/cpu combo online however, sorry about that

Hmm, the fact that the filesystem is FAT32 is most likely the cause of why it got cross-linked. No Microsoft does *not* recommend using FAT32 unless it's a special case, like moving the drive to another system that only runs Windows 9x for instance You maybe able to correct the issues my using the CHKDSK command with the following options /F /R which will force a fix. It will however ask you to schedule this during the next reboot. Do so then reboot the machine and see what happens.

Say let's find out APK ·v²¦ üéâ Seems to be working for me, you are holding down the ALT key then use the numpad or the number keys to type in codes above 127 are you not ?!?

Philipp: Are extended ASCII characters compatible with forum?
jmmijo replied to jmmijo's topic in Feedback
Ask and you receive, I'd say it worked for you APK This goes to show just how good our site admin really is, thanks Philip -
I have to say that I highly recommend people use the hosts file as you can also help weed out pop-up ads and other crap sites too APK has a lovely one in his APK Toolset and a nice engine to sort them out

Sometimes yes and sometimes no, so far I've had very mixed success with this trick The idea of the bags is to actually cut down on condensation and moisture...

Sorry to be the barrer of bad news but the click of death is just that, a hard cluster/sector/media error Unless you're willing to pay 100's if not 1000's to send the drive into a professional recovery house you're *not* going to be able to recover any of that data with the products available on the retail market. Now I'm a big proponent of a product called R-Studio but most likely it will not be able to reciver anything either due to the fact that the drive is not seeking track zero properly. You can try the freezer trick and see if that helps or not, some users have gotten this to work but I doubt it will in this case. Basically just stick the drive into an anti-static bag, then tape shut. Place it in another anti-static bag then tape that shut. Finally I would place it in a freezer bag then ziploc that shut and leave for a day or two. Chances are good that the click of death will return however

I seem to recall some issues with VIA chipset boards more so then any others when you adjusted these settings from the default. My thinking is you should check out some of the Tweak guides out there for motherboard/OS combo's to see if there is any benefit from doing this You could end up with something really horrific or nothing appears to have changed at all...

BIO-Diesel: A great idea against rising gas costs & alternative fuel
jmmijo posted a topic in Slack Space
So this sounds great however has there been any indication of the actual emissions from said burnt and of course the unburnt particulates that come out of the exhaust ?!? Also, how bad a performance hit do you take, if any of course. I wouldn't mind the exhaust smelling like french fries at all but it the emissions are the same or close to it then no go. -
Oooo nice, I'm going to be looking at upgrading my server, perhaps the time is right to look into these monster storage drives Damn, I just read the PR and it says availability isn't until the fall sometime

Seagate NOT to be outdone: 400gb drives w/ 16mb buffers!
jmmijo replied to jmmijo's topic in Hardware
APK, I have the Promise SuperTrak SX6000 I2O controller card. It's a 6 channel caching card with 4 x 120 GB PATA drives. The problem isn't really with it's performance but with the storage capacity. I really would like to upgrade all these drives to 250GB versions using all 6 channels. This would be great however I'm looking into upgrading my server to dual-opteron's but the caveat now is wether there are drivers for the 64-bit version of Windows XP I'm waiting for a reply from Promise on this one, as well as wether any of their cards will work or not. I just got back a bid for this monster server however the pricing is a bit high. I expected that but I may look at alternatives as well if I receive bad news from Promise. As for the performance difference between PATA and SATA drives, well I see a much faster load times between a RAID 0 array on PATA drives vs. SATA. Is it a lot, not a whole lot, a few seconds but it's very noticable with my gaming rig since moving over to SATA raid vs PATA raid. It's got to be the sustained data I/O rates are just better with SATA drives in general, wether in single drive or a RAID array. -

I think I remember what you're talking about however I can't seem to find anything to make it do this either. Perhaps there's a reghack or another third party app to do this -

Well I'm trying to maximize my storage capacity by getting either the WD 250GB SATA's or the WD 250GB PATA's. If I go the SATA route I can create a 750GB RAID 5 array from the 4 HD's. However if I go the PATA route I can get a 1.2TB RAID 5 array from 6 HD's instead The difference is that I've noticed a performence difference between the PATA and SATA interface, you get a bit better sustained rates with SATA. Could be less overhead and hopefully with the nextgen SATA II spec you get the nice command queuing. -

jmmijo replied to kode k's topic in Customization & Tweaking
You just mean Thumbnail view correct ?!? When you open a Windows Explorer window there should be a View menu option. The default is Tiles view, just click on the Thumbnails view and that should do it. -
Well I've been using the Promise line of controllers since back in the day too, I had an old VLB and a PCI caching controller and both were high performance cards. As for what's available today well take a look at this one, the FastTrak S150 SX4 and this new one, the FastTrak SX4030. Both are very good at what they do and of course and require additional ram to operate properly. This added ram will of course be used for both the XOR engine and the caching/buffering of data.
-
Also note that if you get an I2O RAID controller, these require some ram installed on them or they may come with some preinstalled. This ram is used for both the custom IOS and data buffering which does help speed things up a bit. Nice thing about these controllers is that there are prevelent in the SCSI arena however they are starting to show up more in the ATA/SATA RAID controller areana as well. I have a Promise Supertrak SX6000 with a 128MB stick of ram and this does help things out with any of the configs used, RAID 0, 1, 0+1(aka 10), 5 or JBOD.

Thanks for the link Lotus, that's also a good read

I know there is a limit for FAT partition's to 4GB, this is available in the text setup if you choose this filesystem rather then NTFS, however I didn't think there was a limit under NTFS for the BOOT/SYSTEM partition other then what the OS can see Hmm, time to look at the MS KB a little. I found a nice article on why there's an initial 4GB limit. Makes sense if you read it on why this is so
