Hey APK, don't you have one of those nice and expensive solid-state HD's ?!? Seems to me you mentioned this in another thread and it run via a U160 interface IIRC

Although SATA150 can run up to 150MB/s, that's the burst speed, not sustained, in which case 40MB/s is the steady trasnsfer rate. Basically, this means that ATA66 is fast enough here. The real advantage of SATA is getting past the latest physical limitation of 137GB. You're also forgetting the storage capacity of ATA/SATA drives when compared to SCSI Also one other critical point to make about SCSI is MTBF rates, SCSI devices are generally designed for 24/7 operation. If you read most/all of the manufactures fine print about ATA/SATA drives you'll note that they make no such warranties anywhere near this for ATA/SATA drives. Although WD with their Raptor line are calling these near-line quality drives, i.e., they should run better and longer then their desktop drives. Also note that their Raptor drives are based on their SCSI drive technology, hence the reason they have standard SCSI capacities

Remember another reason that Seagate can make these 15K drives quiter and actually run cooler is the spindle motor technology and the design of the casing. You'll note that the spindle motors are designed with fluid filled multi-ball bearings. They are designed within much tighter tolerances and are somewhat larger and better torque to get them platters up to speed. The platters too are manufactured to a higher degree of precision to weed out any of the slightly warped ones which would case inbalances and hence more heat and wear on the spindle motor. Also if you've looked at the 15K drives they are designed with extra cooling fins built-in, better heat disappation.

Iexplorer consuming huge amounts of Virtual Memory!!! System slows to a crawl
jmmijo replied to valorbu's topic in Software
A couple of notes on this one: 1) How much physical ram is installed in the machine, 256MB ?!? If so this is way too little for most things anymore, I would bumpt it up to 512MB at least. I personally run 1GB in all my machines and the ones I setup for my family and friends too. 2) I usually set the pagefile size to either twice your physical ram or a static size if you have 1GB of ram installed. Basically I make the pagefile the same min/max sizes. See if this helps or makes any difference or not. You can change the pagefile size right now without having to purchase and install anymore memory. -
Via S3G integrated card not supported by Age Of Mythology
jmmijo replied to moley's topic in Hardware
I too recommend ditching the onboard S3 graphics, your performance with even a low end Radeon/GeForce will actully improve a bit because it's not an integrated graphics solution I've used and sold many boards with this particular onboard graphics solution, but only to corporate clients who only need a display and nothing more. -
To add onto APK's thoughts I would like to mention the following: Port Scanning is where somebody or multiple users are scanning your specific IP address for any/all open ports on your local machine. There could be some sort of mal/spy/trojan installed on your box that only launches when your email app is loaded, in this case OE. Port scanning should occur regardless of the net app you have loaded, in this case if you are just online/connected to your ISP then there is a possibility that you could be getting port scanned. A good software firewall should help you determine if this is truly occuring or not, like APK mentioned I too recommend Zone Alarm Personal Edition. I would also recommend d/l'ing AdAware 6.xx Personal Edition and scan your box for any of these kinds of apps installed in the background.

On non-NVidia cards, Power DVD 5.0 seems the best. I don't think CPU utilization is as critical as it used to be with slower CPU's however it is nice to see this so you know that the coder(s) have tweaked the app and it's not as resource hungry I personally use Power DVD 4 running thru Windows Media Player 9.xx

how to resize the drive C after upgrade from NT to 2000 server
jmmijo replied to johnsonhung's topic in Software
Originally posted by johnsonhung: Quote: Thank you for your help. But can you tell me the proper procedures to upgrade from NT to 2000. How to prevent the problem happening? Please advise!! Johnson Well since the original partiton is 4GB you could backup/archive any pertinent data, which you should do before upgrading anyway, and then us PM to resize the partition to what you want/need. Then do the upgrade to Win 2K Server. -

THIS thread pretty much answers your question. Basically, either use the reghack listed in one of the posts or purchase a separate Promise Ultra ATA controller card and use an F6 install for Win 2K

I'm waiting to purchase either a new system for when Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 come out as I see no need to get any of the new graphics cards until something can really use the power. Also I'm thinking of going to a flat screen but I'm torn between getting a plasma disply or an LCD, me thinks I want a Media Center config instead of the CRT I have now but I don't know for sure

(note the workding: GeForce 4...) Ignore the GeForce 4 as these cards are technically a GeForce 5, nVidia gave them the brand name of GeForce FX instead of the numeral 5 Looks like the NV4x series may go back to the numeral system and be branded the GeForce 6 series. As for you question, the FX 5700 has basically replaced the FX 5600 model. However there may not be too much of a performance difference on your machine but of course if price is the major concern here you most likely will be able to get an FX 5600 for a pretty good price now.

For those that use "APK Registry Cleaning Engine": New model!
jmmijo replied to jmmijo's topic in Software
Perhaps, however I'm rebuilding my FTP server currently so it will have to be later until I get things back in some kind of order once more -
I'm not sure if there is a limit or not, but perhaps it's more an issue with DUN then anything else I would test the limit theory by renaming the hosts file and then opening this renamed file and then copying and pasting say half the entries into a newly created hosts file. See if it works with this size, if not then I'd cut the entries in half again until it works. Then I would add some more say 100~200 entries until I reach the non-functional threshold. One thing I've noticed with 2k over XP is that I usually have to logoff from the local machine and log back on again even after making one change to the hosts file, not sure why that is but since upgrading my workstation to XP this is no longer neccessary.

Hmm, I just used the import Foreign Disk(s) under the Disk Management console and it worked fine for me. New install and everything on a different RAID controller. I then copied the data over to said new array and then wiped the old dynamic drives away...

There is if you have an old DOS box, but running it on a new machine, well I can only think of one reason, just to see if you can
-
Just one acronym for you on this: PnP (Plug-N-Play) The technical reasons are that the card, PCI or ISA has now been assigned a new IRQ by the system bios and thus looks like a new device to the OS I would d/l the latest drivers for your model 3com card and copy then to floppy disk. The old floppy drive is still valuable for this reason alone...

Clients can't access server resources when server is locked.

I would opt for NT4 since you have an older and much slower CPU. -
Does the D-Link router provide internal/LAN DHCP services, if so then there isn't anything else needed other then ethernet cables connecting each machine to the router Basically the DHCP server will provide every internal machine with it's own unique private IP address, usually in the 192.168.xxx.xxx range.

Normally you can't install just one .DLL as there are usually multiple support files that go with it. The fact you want to run it on NT4 is another issue too and will require some kind of hacking to even wedge it into place let alone getting it to work with the OS to begin with Here is a google search on this issue. Perhaps somebody here does have some info on doing this kind of thing...
