  1. Normally you wouldn't want to resurrect an old thread like this but rather start a new one and maybe reference this thread in your attempts to find a solution to your problems Perhaps a mod/admin can move this to a new thread and I'm sure folks will be able to better respond to this issue. As for myself, I can't say I've ever really tried to use REGISTRY recovery tools, usually I like to backup data I need, reformat and reinstall the OS. So another option you may want to try is one of the FREEWARE registry apps that will attempt to remove old and orphaned entries that are no longer valid, this may or may not help.

    Microsoft.NET

I also beleive the latest nVidia drivers also require .NET to be installed. It is becoming more common-place to have .NET apps now and of course they usually require at least .NET v1 or v2 to be installed Also note that there are now patches and SP's for these code bases too, be sure the user/users go back to the WindowsUpdate page and check for any new security patches after the initial install.

    32-bit oem to 64-bit ???

I think the 64-bit version falls under a special category, meaning Ultimate(Retail) or OEM only.

You're welcome and you too have a great new year

    Booting

Perhaps a stuck/corrupt device driver and/or system file ?!? Have you tried last known good from the Boot Menu Options by pressing the F8 key while the OS boots ?!? If you can get back into Normal mode after the initial hanging and then a reset, you may want to look at Device Manager and see if any Yellow exclamations or Red X's show up, this could be the culprit. What was the last app and/or driver updates you did to the machine ?!?

    someone help me out please

Another option is to find your drivers CD that came with the motherboard/system. Is this an Intel motherboard ?!? If so, can you locate the Intel Express Installer CD ?!? This will have the drivers for the onboard AC97 Sound Codec. If this is an OEM machine, like a Dell or HP, then you can usually d/l the drivers from the respective OEM's website as well. Unfortunately, Analog Devices is one of those Codec manufacturers that only deals directly with the motherboard manufacturers and hence don't provide any end user d/l options for device drivers...

    New HD

There should not be any issue unless you have an older motherboard that only supported up to 137GB HDD's. This shouldn't be an issue if the MB was purchased in the past 2~3 years or so as the BIOS should already support the larger HDD capacities, including the newest 1TB/1000GB capacities
  8. Well, then I would look at the possibility that there is some sort of OS or Registry corruption, how to fix this maybe a repair install or a fresh OS install. If the onboard audio had been disabled in the CMOS setup then the device would not show up in Device Manager. One other thing you could try to do is to reboot into SAFE mode and then uninstall any AUDIO drivers/apps that relate to this or any other Realtek audio codec and then under Device Manager remove/uninstall anything that also relates to the Realtek audio codec, including any duplicate entries. Upon rebooting into normal mode, say no to installing any drivers for the audio codec and run the Realtek install app to see if this repairs any registry entries and such and reboot when prompted to.
  9. Those are the correct drivers however you may need to install the latest chipset drivers first and then try the Audio Codec Drivers

Do You Hate Bugs As Much As We Do?

I can already get the free version of McAfee for being a Comcast customer, so I tried it and removed it from all the machines I installed it on, interfered with my online gaming and such. Went with AVG Free and Spybot combination instead.

Windows XP Pro - 64 Bit Edition

I've decided to Dual-Boot my file server between Windows 2K Pro and XP-64-bit Edition, this is mostly for compatbility and for those occasional things I need to do in the older OS. My gaming rig already dual-boots between the 32-bit and 64-bit XP Pro OS's, so I'm fine there too. It's interesting to note that Gothic 3 runs like an absolute pig on XP Pro 64-Bit for some unknown reason. However, it runs just fine under either XP Pro 32-bit or Win 2K Pro, has to be something that the engine and the 64-bit OS is doing. It behaves the same way on both my machines so I know that it's nothing to do with my SLI system or my single ATi graphics card machine, it is the game

    Monitor

That was my next suggestion, when you can see the same issues on the monitor when it's connected to another machine, that does indeed indicate a monitor issue, check with the manufacturer for any warranty repair/servicing. As for the defrag question, could be that some files didn't need to be defragged or they were system files in use at the time.

The forum is a ghost town.......

So dosfreak, does Vogons also help troubleshoot issues with XP Pro 64-bit Edition ?!?

    Monitor

OK, so what type of monitor ?!? The older CRT/Picture Tube style or the newer LCD Flat-Panel type ?!? Also, have you tried power-cycling the monitor to see if the issue stays ?!? And finally, have you checked the connections, the video cable going from the monitor to the video card ?!? Oh, if you have another monitor to test with to verify if it's the monitor or the video card inside your computer, that would be handy too. You need to narrow down this issue to either the monitor or the computer. I've seen both monitors starting to fail that can produce anomolies on the screen and I've seen video cards failing that can do the same thing.

I can't say I really like wireless, mostly a personal issue, and to this end when somebody is trying to game and has a WAP device I inform them to disable the wireless function and connect an ethernet cable to one of the free wired ports and see what happens

    Graphics card

If you stick with AGP 8x graphics cards, these should all be 1.5VDC type cards but be sure to check the motherboard manual or Asus's website for details on the support type of graphics cards. Also note that ONLY AGP type cards will work and not PCIe cards which are the current and most available type out right now. Also note the link I placed in the above post about the Sapphire 2600 HD in an AGP interface This is one card that has the latest generation of GPU's on it.

    Graphics card

That Asus model is indeed an AGP type socket 478 motherboard. You should be able to get a pretty decent AGP card like the nVidia 7600 series or the ATi X1600 series, however, I noted that there was a post on the news section about Sapphire releasing an ATi 2600 AGP card recently, I wonder if I can find the article again EDIT: Yep, here it is...
  19. Has anybody else noticed a recent influx of websites that redirect you to an ADBLOCKER page ?!? Seems to me that it's becoming more and more of a real problem but I guess that is their right to do so, it's their website. As a consumer it's also my right to plonk said website(s) and delete any bookmarks I have to these sites as well I suppose if they feel like they are not getting paid enough from their click-throughs, then perhaps they need to find a better paying solution to hosting their website. Sorry folks if this sounds like a rant, just wondering if any others have noticed this trend or not.....

    Website Blocking Due To Adblockers

I do see your point Philip and I appreciate your honesty on this issue and that you try to limit the most annoying of these adverts I guess my point is I run a personal forum and host it through iPowerWeb hosting, I don't require any of my users to pay for the forums and I don't allow any ads on the site, I pay for the annual service myself along with the domain name renewell. I'm not what you call Mr. Moneybags either but I do believe in the dicemanation of free information to anybody that wants it and it saddens me that so many want to make a buck with adverts on their sites. To each their own I guess and if the net ends up being a pay to browse service I guess I will just go back to playing offline games and such....

    Website Blocking Due To Adblockers

Interesting to note you HOMOCIDAL rage tendancies there dosfreak, I am to a somehwat lesser degeree, in the same boat. I get outraged at how many sites seem to depend on the paltry ad revenue bread crumbs left on the floor As for me plonking sites that redirect me to their own adblocking page, well, too bad for them, I will go elsewhere instead and spread the word about them too. Notice that when there are news posts here and I follow the store to their site and get redirected, I will post a comment about their adblocking redirects too

New pc doesn't restart, shutsdown instead

Ah, that seems to indicate some timing issues with the motherboard and the ram modules. It does look like perhaps a BIOS update maybe needed to resolve this matter, however, not every manufactures modules will get supported As for the motherboard being a Gigabyte model, I have not had any issues with these boards myself and have had major issues with MSI branded boards. I do agree that ASUS makes the best boards...

    lag.......

I do believe that WAP has a wired port or two correct ?!? If so, try disabling the computers wireless connection and the wireless part of the router and try it again. LAG can be caused by many different things including both local and internet traffic/issues. Also, does this lag occur when playing a non-Online game ?!? If so, what game/games and what are the exact system specs of this new machine, i.e., cpu, ram, hdd, motherboard etc...

New pc doesn't restart, shutsdown instead

Man, that has to be fustrating to say the least... I'm thinking either the PS Unit and/or the Motherboard/CPU. Since I'm assuming these are new parts, do you have any old parts to test with like a PS Unit with the current motherboard or an older Motherboard/CPU to test with the current PS Unit ?!? It seems to be either a loose connection or power in general and you want to try to narrow down the cause of this. A big hint is that you have to keep pressing the Power Switch over and over again in order to get the machine back up and running
