    [HELP] Raid 0 recovery..

RAID 0 or Striping will require both drives connected to properly get all the data back as basically half the data gets placed on one drive while the other half gets placed on the second drive. Does this Dell Poweredge server use an Adaptec RAID or Zero Channel RAID card ?!? If so then you should be able to use another machine that has a similar config and just connect up these drives and the array should work just fine. In fact you can actually share multiple arrays on one controller
  2. I do believe this is by design as a web browser will expect the pages to be served on port 80 by default. The only way I know how to access web pages on some other port is to use the :portnumber after the URL. Using a router wouldn't help here as your ISP will drop *all* packets with a port request under 1024

    Dead Spanned Volume

You can also try out this great piece of software to help recover most of the files in this array

CDRW & HD on secondary IDE channel - Will it work?

One thing you need to make sure of is that you have the BIOS set for Enhanced mode for the SATA/IDE configuration. The reason for this is that with an OS like Windows 2K or XP you can then use all four ATA ports along with the 2 SATA port for up to 6 drives. If you use any other mode then you may not be able to see all 5 or 6 drives at once
  7. I personally think Flash FXP is da bomb baby However I understand it's a personal preference more then anything else I'm connected to the leechmenow account without any issues with WS FTP however I'll try it out with the test account and see what happens.

USB Flash Drive for data storage - good or bad idea?

Since you're currently using smaller media for your current mackup solution have you considered CD-RW drives, either internal or external USB2 devices ?!? An external USB2 HD would be the fastest but it may also be the most susceptable to failure. With CD-RW media you can rotate media on a daily basis. If you need storage for more then what a CD-RW can hold or even a DVD-RW/+RW then perhaps you need to consider a tape backup solution instead.
  9. As soon as I get home tonight I'll take a look at the server, perhaps there's a reboot in order for the machine
  10. @APK, I sent you a PM with the info, which you should still have from the last time you used my FTP server

    Forum upgrade is coming

Philip, I received the following error message when attempting to reply to a post. Error: 1064 You have an error in your SQL syntax. Check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 's 56k dialup, help networkers!!!', forum_lastposter = 'jmmijo',
  12. So APK, you going to upload the latest to my server then for all to have access to including myself
  13. One thing I noticed with my upgraded gaming rig is that a RAID 0 array with a pair of SATA drives really does make things faster, not just the OS loads but pretty much everything I have two boxes, one is the Server/Workstation that I'm typing on now and the other is strictly for gaming so it doesn't have a lot of the extra crap running in the background nor any of the fluff that Microsoft includes with XP Pro. Of course my gaming rig is a P4-3GHz with a matched pair of 512MB modules and this does make the system much faster then it was when running a 2.53Ghz running at the slower 533MHz FSB. As for your Athlon system, my server is running a 2600+ Barton core on an Asus A7N8X Deluxe board with a matching pair or DDR333. It's a snappy little setup but I do sometimes see some slugishness, but only when I'm trying to run a game like Diablo II at the same time the server is running
  14. Quote: Sorry to "steal-your-fire" here jmmijo, but since I am here replying to him, I might as well answer: * @ this place in REGEDIT.EXE? You will see the LargeSystemCache set to 0 by default on workstation/pro models of NT based Os' like NT/2000/XP/2003 etc. which means MORE RAM goes "free" for programs to access... if you set it to 1 (default on server Os type/models iirc)? The cache gets more "free RAM" allocated to it by default... (I'd be willing to bet that is the area that particular tweak is working on in the X-Setup program, a mass registry re-writer like TweakUI, Fresh UI & the like work on reparameterizing system setup values!) APK No problem APK As for your system config Ken B., you may want to look at adding some extra RAM as it's pretty darn cheap now a days. The thing is it will not slow down your system performance and you maybe able to tweak it a bit to gain some extra performance, here's how. If your machine can take up to 2GB of RAM via 512MB modules then you can adjust your pagefile size to say a static 1GB min & max and then reboot after adjusting this. Once you reboot, try out your video app and see how things work. See if there are any slowdowns or even if it seems to be working faster. I myself also prefer static pagefiles rather then dynamic ones. Basically once you get above 1GB of physical memory you tend to need less of a pagefile to handle any overflow So what kind of motherboard do you have again ?!?
  15. Quote: Can I be down for that proggy too please....or at least the list. Thanks, F Please read this post as you can d/l it from my FTP server via the leechmenow account Please note that I only allow (2)Two simultaneous connections at once with this account so if it's busy, just try again a little later.
  16. One thing you have to ask about your current config here Ken B is, how large or the video data files you're currently working with ?!? If they are large files, 1GB plus then I would look at adding a lot more RAM to your system, basically add more then you need currently so as to maximize your system ram use before paging. Another option is to use a reg/system tweak app like X-Setup that would allow you to set the OS to use all/most available ram before paging. Anytime you have to page it will slow the machine down, no matter how fast your I/O and HD subsystem happens to be
  17. I would now look at the ISP side of things and see what maybe an issue here. Perhaps look at the DUN and various tweaks and such to make sure things are adjusted for dialup instead of broadband, you did mention this was your old machine which I'm sure was on a bigger pipe

    Buying new desktop for home

I really like my Aopen AX4C Max II board, but it's a high-end 875P chipset mobo, not for the frugal that's for sure I'd also recommend the Aopen AX4SPE-UN as it's a fine 865PE chipset board with onboard LAN if you need it. Also the Asus P4P800 series boards are just great. The sweet spot for CPU's is the P4c-2.8 however you may find the 3 not much more and of course if you ask Mr. Gov he can clue you into all the fun overclocking tricks and solutions for getting the P4c-2.4 up to 3 and beyond Memory, don't skimp cause the price is great for RAM right now, even the high-end stuff. Get either Kingston HyperX matched pairs or the Corsair TwinX matched pairs and if you can get the 1GB package, that will be 2 x 512MB sticks. Graphics cards run the entire spectrum now, I'm getting by with just an Abit Siluro FX5600 however if you have the extra funds then of course the big boys from nVidia, the FX5950 Ultra or ATi, the 5800 XT do kick some butt. If you want to really give your storage some kick in the pants then go with a pair of WD Raptor 36 or 72 GB drives in RAID 0 mode. These are basically 10k SCSI mechanism's fitted with SATA interfaces and of course what WD calls near-line performance and reliability, i.e., they are warranted for 5 years 8) As for a DVD burner, I can't say enought of the Plextor 708A, this baby kicks ass and comes in black if you want to get a matching chassis too Speaking of cases, I recommend the Antec Performance II series or the Performance Plus series. Very nice configurations and their power supplies are great too. If you want to go with some other chassis you can with some no-name power supply I'd recommend getting an Antec or Enermax unit instead.

    GREAT new FREE Undelete tool!

I'll try this out and see how it works. Also, I didn't notice any support for RAID arrays. This is something I have to have support for as I've had an array or two dump on me I found R-Studio to work wonders here, even on damaged RAID arrays I think Mr. Guv can attest to the quality of this product as well...

Write speed RAID 0 to slow

I think the default block size is 64K for many RAID controllers, both SCSI and ATA/SATA. However I'm not sure this will effect the write speed so much as the read speed

    Constant DNS lookup failures?

How about a DNS issue with your carrier, in this case SBC ?!? Perhaps they are doing some upgrades and/or they are having some sporadic issues with DNS Here's the tell-tale for an issue with the carrier rather then on your machine, the next time this occurs, just type in the direct IP address for each site that you can no longer get to via www.msn.com or www.yahoo.com etc... If each can be reached via this method then check your current IP info with the ipconfig /all command from the prompt and then note the carriers primary and secondary DNS servers. Perhaps the primary is sometimes getting hammered and is not failing over to the secondary DNS server, just don't know for sure. One other note, when this failure occurs, do you also lose email server responses as well ?!? Hit the send/receive button for you email client and see if there is a problem there too when this issue comes about next

How do I check how much RAM is actually there?

You do mean how much installed memory there is on the motherboard ?!? If so then just look at the POST Banner screen when the machine first boots, this should show the amount of RAM installed, minus of course any shared video memory

    Joining a PDC

Good info Howard Stern, thanks I take it that this isn't an issue with a Win 2K PDC then ?!?
  24. jmmijo

    Joining a PDC

The first thing I always do for new machines wishing to join a domain is to create the machine name/account on the PDC. Make sure the computer name on the client machine is what you want it to be first as the spelling has to be correct Then use the Computer Name tab under the XP Pro machine system properties. You should see a button named Change. Click this button. Near the bottom it says Member of Domain Workgroup Click the radio button next to Domain and type in the domain name in the field and then click the OK button. There should now be a dialog box with Domain Admin account credentials for proper authentication. Type this info in and this should do it. Most likely you'll have to reboot the client machine and upon rebooting you'll need to CTRL + ALT + DEL to enter into the logon screen and get access to the domain
