The: What Computer Part did you buy this week thread
jmmijo replied to DosFreak's topic in Slack Space
ATi has always had excellent video output along with their excellent DVD decoding as well. This is why it's hard to make a choice of new graphics card unless you have one of those nice 42" or larger plasma displays. Then the choice becomes clear, ATi all the way Also check out the PCI-X sig for more on the specs. -
I say PDX, but I do admit the traffic in Seattle is worse However we combat the stress by having more micro-brews then anybody I however think Hilo would be a better stress free city then Honolulu, unless of course you had property in the queens bath area :x

Thanks for the info

I meant to post something about this earlier at work today, but I immediately went to their update page and it loaded just fine. In fact there were a couple of updates needed so since I was at lunch I decided to d/l them and restart the box. Worked just fine for me

So since this is a thread about the latest Catalyst drivers I thought perhaps I'd sample any thoughts on compatibility with said drivers and/or ATi graphics cards and the game Dungeon Siege: Legends of Aranna. A good friend of mine recently purchased the AIW 9600 and unfortunately DS crashes and/or locks up after about a minute or two. He brought the machine over to my house to get it fixed so we flatlined his boot drive and re-installed XP Pro from scratch and I proceeded to do a base install with the latest drivers for everything. Still it freaked out and I was beginning to think it's the graphics card and/or drivers. Some forums seem to think there is some compatibility problem with this graphics card but who knows. So any thougths would be appreciated on this issue, thanks

No becuase you need to NAT one of those WAN IP addresses that your ISP gave you. Basically then the only other *cheap* way of doing this is to configure one of the machines with Internet Connection Sharing and install a second NIC in this box. One NIC will be used on the WAN side connected to the xDSL modem and the other will be connected to the LAN side via a switch or hub. Since ICS does it's own NAT service it will provide a pool of private IP addresses, usually in the 192.168.1.xxx octet range. Then you connect up as many other machines as you want to the hub/switch or as many ports as you have that is Here's a Microsoft KB search on the subject of ICS.

Also, can you tell us what the make/model of the motherboard is ?!? Perhaps this is a known issue with the onboard sound and there is a firmware/bios update to correct this problem.
-
If you purchase something like the Linksys gateway you will only need the one IP address, so you can give one of them back to your ISP and not have to pay that extra, which most ISP's charge for. The reason is that a gateway device will act as a proxy server providing NAT/DHCP services to the LAN. Also you'll want to get a gateway device that has at least 4 switch ports on it as this will allow for future expansion of more machines. You can if need be purchase an additional soho switch if you need to add more then 4 machines to the same connection. Also you will not need to use the x-over cable anymore, just straight Cat5/Cat5e cabling is sufficient as each will connecto the the gateway devices switch ports.

Just out of curiosity which make/model mouse are you using and if it's a Microsoft or Logitech are you using their Mouse software ?!?

Firewire is hot swap like USB is, it's a pain to do but like you said it's the best option for now
-
I'm not aware of any external or bridgeboard that would help you out in this case, mainly cause the Firewire port is designed to connect to one computer at a time. If somebody does know a way of doing this then please post the info cause I'd like to know too There is one less convenient way of doing this, you could have two separate firewire cables, one connected to each port on this external device then only connect one cable at a time to each computer or if it's easier to reach, connect only one cable at a time to the external drive. The other thing that occured to me is that XP automatically sets up a firewire network when it detects even a generic firewire port. I wonder if this could be the option you're seeking. Perhaps thru a firewire hub or something like this ;(
-
If you opened up your external Firewire/USB case you would find one of these bridgeboards inside, they basically convert the Firewire and/or USB into a standard IDE interface. So basically the only thing different is that it's cheaper to purchase the bridgeboard(s) without the external case due to the fact you're not paying for the case and the power supply. Since I don't really need any chassis as I'll mount the drives in my extra full tower case and the power will be provided by the supply already inside the case. I'll just use a firewire cable to connect from my Audigy card to said bridgeboard and have at it
-
Quote: 'cause I'm runnin' out of space...well...I'm pretty much out already. Hence the reason I'm looking at the Firewire bridgeboards. I have this Super Micro Full Tower case just collecting dust and thought well since I already have firewire I should look into the external cases, however I soon found the bridgeboard option which would allow me to daisy-chain many drives together to add more storage space
-
No that's for daisy-chaining to other Firewire devices You may want to check out Firewire Depot for other options and bridge-boards that allow up to two drives connected to it

I personally use the Linksys xDSL/Cable Modem Router/Gateway, model BEFSR41 which you can check out here. Has everything you need and should be ready to go out of the box, at least it was for me

Just look at the label on top of the drive, WD always stamps a Refurbished print on this lable, usually at an angle across it in light blue coloring. There is something else to note on WD refurbs, the company I work for does on occasion get refurbs from WD and we sell these at a lower cost to those that don't care how long the warranty is. We have noticed some of these drives have faulty spindle motors, mainly I think it's because WD only serviced the plater(s) and/or the control board rather then the motor which is pressed or screwed down to the aluminum housing. I have a feeling that the reason some of these drives failed to begin with was a faulty spindle motor and not anything else

Notebook related question: P4 vs. Centrino
jmmijo replied to iks's topic in Everything New Technology
Faster is a relative term in that faster CPU clock speed doesn't always mean better The Centrino brand name is a set of chips that work together to solve a specific need for mobile computing, the CPU, the Chipset and Wireless communications. The reason the CPU runs at a slower speed is that it's a more effecient CPU so it gets more work done at a slower clock speed. It also runs much cooler and and hence uses far less power and so battery life is increased greatly. I wouldn't neccessarly say that a P4-M running at 2.8GHz compared to a Centrino 1.4GHz is faster depending on the task. How fast can you type in formulas in Excel or how fast a typist are you really Gaming on the other hand is quite different so every single cpu clock cycle is important and of course so it the graphics card being used -
APK, thanks for the info I personally use MyIE2 along with the Google toolbar, non-advanced version to help with my pop-ups.

Quote: If you wanna make it really l33t? Add a domain filter user configurable, if domain = www.goatlove.com, for example, is added to config, then popups there are always allowed. Pop-Up Killer has this feature, you can black-list domains with wildcards However it's no longer being updated as the coder couldn't keep up and was looking for it to go open source of some kind... -
So APK, do you think that the good folks at AdAware know about this kind of thing, as far as spyware goes that is ?!? I'd like to think so, however who knows for sure :x If there are apps like this then how is anybody going to know if they are running if they don't show up in the Task Manager, perhaps a third party process manager instead or a thread manager, or how about getting down to the opcode level and a machine language sniffer then 8) Man I miss 68k M/L 4e75h

The only thing is APK, I've had a few of the same things occur to me, however if you look/review the full headers of the affected email, they are passing through some other domain/network with just your spoofed email address as the sender. Of course I can't fully discount back doors, spyware and the like but so far neither my anti-virus nor the latest AdAware refernce file has found anything. Also there are no extra apps/processes running on my machine to cause me to think otherwise

Be sure to edit both your config.sys/nt and autoexec.bat/nt files and rem out the lines that refer to mscdex.exe, which is in the autoexec file and the drivername.sys reference in the config file. You can also delete these lines as they are not required under Win 9x or any flavor of NT

Quote: you can bring up the Task Manager by holding the Ctrl and Alt keys similtaneously and hitting the Del key once. then press the PrtScn key on your keyboard and then paste this into a new document in the MSPaint app. Once pasted you can save as a JPG file and post this screen dump. I would recommend not saving it as a BMP file as these are very large files Also, while in MSPaint you can edit and crop the image for a smaller size and for editing out any info you don't want to show
