    Ping Spikes

Hmm, the fact that the ping delays jump could actually mean some sort of network traffic delay/packet collision on the ISP's network or even where their network connects to the backbone. How many jumps are there between your ISP and their backbone provider(s) ?!? What this means is that they give the end user a connection and then in turn routes your packets to one or more backbone providers like UUnet and/or Verio for instance. There are a number of backbone providers out there with varying amounts of capacity as well. It's also possible that you ISP takes many more hops and/or a funky route to get to their backbone provider(s). Have to done a trace route to the end server(s) you frequently play on ?!? This will give you more info on what route the packets take to get to their destination from your connection. What you appear to be experiencing is latency or lag as it's called and of course FPS games tend to be the most sensitive to this kind of thing
  3. @Lotus and APK, I've copied the APK Ping into the LeechMeNow folder. Have fun
  4. OK, the update is available on my server, see above for logon details. Here's the filename: APKRegistryCleaningEngine2002SR6FullVersionFinal.zip

    Win2K and large HDD

@PsychoSword, no problem with adding a secondary PCI controller, like the ones from Promise for instance. They all support 48-bit LBA now. If you did happen to get an older firmware on the card it can easily be flashed to support this new addressing
  6. Quote: jmmijo, If you would... please update the build here for users to snag, with today's 12/18/2003 build, thanks! Same filename, but has some improvements from folks' suggestions who tested it here now. Please post here or in 'pm' when you copied the update to the leechfolder... thanks! IMPROVEMENTS: 1.) dh13's suggestion to improve the status bar's (std. Win32 one @ bottom of screen & homemade one I made 2-3 panels above it as well) output with "DONE: 250 entries found" messages on both @ the end of scan runs. & 2.) An internal improvement to some of its string handling code on output of information to the screen. Not one users would note, but uses Trim functions on string output to screen to not waste a drop of RAM & to also keep strings put out from being corrupted possibly thru added data tacking onto the end of each string. * Thanks for the suggestions guys, when jmmijo gives the "OK", you can snag this build too... APK P.S.=> Duhmez & jmmijo, I am also uploading you the updated FULL program fileset as well for your use in your FTP server folders after I write this up... thanks guys! apk I'll have to do the updates when I get home from work tonight

    Building a server for storage

Well I prefer the Promise controllers for ATA RAID however in this case you may want to do some more research on the other two brands as they may offer something that you like/need for this config

    Building a server for storage

Solutions are available from Promise, 3ware and Adaptec.
  9. I don't have the game but can only assume that it works like others, pressing the ENTER or the ~ key will drop down a window or open up a dialog box and then you can enter the appropriate cheat code(s).
  10. Quote: I have tried 5 times, I get an error message. Error is WS_FTP timeouts when doing a directory listing. Sometimes you have to try the FTP client with or without the PASV mode turned on Also, I highly recommend ONLY using Flash FXP for everthing, it's da bomb baby
  11. Quote: I would like to test but I need a better URL to test your program. Better URL, please explain ?!? Are you not using an FTP client or trying to use a web browser instead ?!?
  12. Quote: jimmy thats what windows wont accept is the shortcut with the command line. I created one and tried to add the command line parameter but it keeps giving me an error when I hit apply Ah, you need to make sure the run line has the entire path inside double-quotes like: "c:\program files\Prince of Persia 2\game.exe" YIPPEEYAHOO That should work or what ever the correct path to the game is Also make sure the Start In line has the same info like: "c:\program files\Prince of Persia 2\"
  13. @APK and everyone wanting to d/l this file, here's the filename itself: APKRegistryCleaningEngine2002SR6FullVersionFinal.zip Since it's the only file in this leeching folder there shouldn't be any confusion but I wanted to make sure there wasn't any
  14. Seems to be in CAPS so did you try it that way too Also you have to start the game with the command line parameter YIPPEEYAHOO To do this you'll need to create a desktop shortcut and add this to the run line after the game or start exe file.

    Building a server for storage

Quote: Hi I'm not very au fait with RAID so could you please explain how 4 x 250GB would not give 1TB (in RAID 0 for example)? Backups will be kept on CD anyway but this is for immediate access.. hence I am considering RAID 5.. this would leave 750GB? Do you know any motherboards that support 4 x SATA drives in RAID 5 mode or would I need a seperate controller? Either way.. can you recommend a motherboard/controller? Thanks. Mak This motherboard is about as close as you're gonna get for RAID 0,1 or 10. I'm pretty sure you're going to have to get a seperate controller card to support RAID 5. Also note that yes RAID 5 is good for both speed and data integrety, you should consider some other form of permanent archiving, perhaps Super DLT tape drives for huge amounts of storage. If this client is serious about this kind of thing they shouldn't balk at the pricing. You get what you pay for in this business. As for how you get less then 1TB with RAID 0 you wouldn't, it's called striping and one of the benefits is that you increase the capacity of the array byt the amount each drive in the array can hold, thus 4 x 250GB is 1TB. The downside is that you have to data integrity as if one drive fails in this kind of array, you lose the entire array, hence you could lose most if not all of the data stored on that array. So the ideal solution if you looking for both speed and data integrity is to get one or more separate controllers so you can get a total of near or at 1TB of total storage. This would mean more then 4 drives however. Here's another option you could mention. This is some rack mounted external solution. You could use an existing computer along with an U160/U320 SCSI controller and connect to this bad boy. It can hold up to 15 ATA drives, I know it's not SATA but hey it should operate a bit faster going over the SCSI interface instead.

    What is this rubbish?

Sorry, I neglected to comment on your question there Well on this model I can't say but if it's like any of there other Radeon models then I'd say it's a good buy. I've installed 100's of these cards now in various machine builds and have had little problems with them. They work well with the supplied drivers disk and the OEM Radeon drivers from ATi's site

    What is this rubbish?

Sapphire appears to be the biggest ATi partner ATM. We sell a lot of Powered by ATi cards in the shop, most are Sapphire branded. Then we get the occasional client wanting the retail boxed Built by ATi with all the goodies. Well that depends on which model you get. The desktop retail boxed versions Built by ATi do have extra's like games and such, however their Workstation cards, the Fire GL cards, only come with the DVI2VGA adapters and the drivers disk. This insanely huge box full of nothing basically Here's where things in the states get ludicrus, I'd rather have less fluff and a plain white/brown box, or even just the anti-static bad, along with the drivers disk and the item then these fancy retail boxes ;(
  18. Yes, turn off every protocol except TCP/IP which should be bound to your NIC's. The only way that you can share an internal resource like this is to place it in the DMZ or use an app like PC Anywhere.
  19. So far this seems to be the closest match to this error I can find. Other posts on forums/groups seem to indicate ram issues This site seems to have some good general info on BSOD's/STOP errors as well And another site with some good info
  20. While it's doing the save dump does it specify the .exe/.dll/.sys file that is causing this to occur or does it save only a quick dump and reboot too fast for you to note anything ?!? If so then adjust your shutdown options to pause on the BSOD so you can take notes then perhaps we can better figure out what's causing this to occur. Another think you can do is to look at the Event Viewer, Click on the Start button, then Run then type the following: eventvwr.msc and press ok. Now click on the System log and look for an entry called Save Dump and read off the error codes and addresses. This may provide even more info.
  21. Here's my home LAN/WAN config: 1) External WAN Cable Modem/Router(RCA) brand, connected to my coax cable inside my house. 2) Linksys BEFSR41 Cable/DSL/Router/Gateway comes next. Since this only comes with four 10/100 ports I needed to add a secondary 10/100 8 port SOHO switch. 3) Each box in my house is set for DHCP which is generated via a pool set aside by the Linksys box. It has a built-in NAT/Firewall/DHCP server that you can adjust. I left the DHCP at the default but you could set the available amount of IP addresses to pretty much any size you want. Of course these are non-routable or private IP addresses in the 192.168.xxx.xxx range(Class C). The default gateway/router address for the Linksys is 192.168.0.1 and of course it will automatically resolve your ISP's correct DNS for each box connected. Now as for connection, just standard Cat5e cables will work fine, in fact I have a 100 foot connection between the second floor, where the cable modem and linksys router are down to the basement where another 8-port soho switch is and the rest of the machines. It was an upgrade from my old thin-net hub connection of yesteryor :x I don't see any more packet collisions even with this extra length of cabling. I think however that the spec for each 100Mbit port is 100 meters but I'm sure somebody out there will know for sure on this one The security aspect is great since you would be NAT'ting private IP's to a single WAN public IP. In fact my so called dynamic IP from Comcast has not changed in over a year, basically making it a virtual static IP address Please explain the app or apps that use a changing or dynamic port number? What does this or these apps do ?!? I don't see this as being a problem outbound unless they need a specific port open inbound then you can configure port forwarding inside the Linksys to the appropriate box or boxes.

    Building a server for storage

Software RAID inside 2K/XP uses the Dynamic disk function. You use the Computer Managment Admin tool. However I've never seen the option to use RAID 5, just RAID 0 for striping or RAID 1 for mirroring. @duhmez, can you enlighten me on how to do this under XP Pro ?!? I supppse it's a reg hack or something

    Building a server for storage

Yes I know that but I'm just saying that PATA could be an alternative as the speed difference is not really huge between the UDMA6 and SATA1. Also note that you can get HD's with the same capacity and spindle speed as SATA in a PATA interface But of course if the client absolutely has to have SATA then you have to look at a different controller card...

    Building a server for storage

Here's a snip from Asus's website about the RAID(PATA) feature onboard: "The VIA IDE-RAID controller supports two-channel ATA 133, enabling users to build Maximum 4 ATA-133 hard disk as an RAID0, 1 , 0+1 , JBOD array. And the graphical user interface provides an easy way to configure and manage disk drives or disk arrays connected." Basically it's only for the current Parallel ATA drives up to 133 and only supports up to RAID 0+1 or 10 as some people like to say. This will require 4 drives to operate however you then end up with only 500GB of storage as one pair of drives get's used for the stiping set for performance and then the other pair gets used for the mirrored set, for data backup My preference is a RAID 5 as this provides both the striping and mirroring but also adds parity for data backup and integrity My opinion is that unless the client is satisfied with this kind of storage capacity then that's ok, otherwise it's a waste of money for that onboard raid controller. One other option could be to look at PATA RAID controllers instead. I personally have used many of the Adaptec and Promise ATA RAID controllers. I prefer the Adaptec controllers for everything SCSI and the Promise controllers for everything PATA. Here's the card I use in my personal Workstation/Server. It's a 6 channel PATA controller, an actual I2O RISC based controller

Parity data so if a drive fails then all you have to do is replace the faulty drive and rebuild on the fly Also note this is a RAID 5 spec so it wouldn't matter what type of interface that is used, PATA, SATA, SCSI, FC, etc...
